eat the leek

a. A differ/differs from B
b. A differ/differs from B to B
c. ____ (多个相似的事物) differ in C
English differs from Spanish in that it is not pronounced as it is written.
Korean cuisine differs from English cuisine, because it is much spicier.
Korean cuisine differs from English cuisine in that it is much spicier.
Laws on pollution differ widely from country to country.
Textbooks differ from school to school.
Although they are similar in many respects, bonobos and chimpanzees differ greatly in social and sexual behaviours.
a. differentiate between A and B
b. sth. differentiates A from B
Joe is color-blind and cannot differentiate between red and green.
The camouflage of octopuses makes it difficult for their predators to differentiate between them and rocks.
The ability to speak differentiates humans from other animals.
Although both whales and sharks are aquatic animals, the fact that whales are mammals differentiates whales from sharks.
Joe is color-blind and cannot differentiate between red and green. =>
Joe is color-blind and cannot make a differentiation between red and green.
Product differentiation is an important aspect of business.
Companies should work hard to achieve differentiation in products.
1. Why people remember special gifts they have received?
People remember special gifts or presents that they have received. Why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
One custom that is prevalent in all societies around the globe is that of gift-giving. This is a time-honored tradition in all countries, and evokes different feelings or emotions in all of us. Gift-giving has many different functions in Chinese culture. One can receive a gift as a token of affection, or one can receive or give a gift to stimulate business opportunities. In both of these cases, the gifts are always well received, and serve the function of a memento.
Perhaps the most common situation in which a gift is given is on a special day, for example, one's birthday or an anniversary. These gifts come to a person from loved ones, and usually symbolize affection or admiration.
These gifts can be large or small. For example, my father bought me a digital camera for my last birthday. This was a great present, and was quite expensive. I did not appreciate the gift because of its monetary value, however. I valued it because it was a very thoughtful gift, as my father knew I was interested in photography. Other gifts have less monetary value, but are still just as meaningful. An example of this is when a boyfriend buys flowers for his girlfriend. The flowers do not cost a lot of money, but they evoke feelings of happiness and love.
Gifts can also be given to stimulate business. For example, many businessmen in China will take their most important clients on a special vacation to see the sights of another city. This trip does not relate directly to business, as in many cases, the business at hand is not discussed. Instead, the businessman will offer such a trip as a token of trust and respect. The client appreciates this gesture, as it shows him/her that the businessman is serious about work, and values him/her as a customer.
In both of these cases, the gifts signify to the receiver that he/she is cared about and is important. It is always a treat to receive a gift, and most people view this as a sign of friendship-Gifts serve as mementos of the people who give them, which is why we hold them in special places in our hearts.
2. Do famous athletes and entertainers deserve high salaries?
Some famous athletes and entertainers earn millions of dollars every year. Do you think these people deserve such high salaries? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
There are many famous entertainers and athletes who gross millions of dollars every year. I tend to believe that they in a sense do deserve such high paying salaries. Being a famous entertainer or athlete requires copious amounts of hard work. This job also forces one to give up all of their privacy. Moreover, working in these fields means that one must be the very best.
To become famous, whether in the sports industry or the movie industry, takes a lot of hard work. One must train for years and years to make it to the level of a professional. Not only is this tiring, it also costs a lot of money.
If one hopes to reach the level of a superstar, he/she must spend money on training and bettering himself/herself.
This is not an easy lifestyle, and requires dedication, which many people do not have.
Second, these stars deserve to make a lot of money because they must give up their privacy to serve the public.
As soon as stars leave their homes, they are subjected to constantly being pestered by people who want their autograph or want to take pictures of them. Famous people must undergo the intense scrutiny of the media; television and newspaper reporters take note of every action these people do, and publicize it. Again, this is a difficult lifestyle to lead, as one must constantly be careful of what one says in public.
Finally, working in these industries means that one was born with natural talent. They have harnessed a skill that very few others can call upon. If there were no people in society who could play such a role, the entertainment industry would quickly fall into oblivion. We need these people's skills to entertain us.
In conclusion, I think that famous athletes and movie stars deserve their pay. While it seems like too much money when we first hear how much they make, after careful consideration, we realize that they must put a lot of work into their careers, much more than ordinary people do in many cases.
3. Is literacy more important today than in the past?
Is the ability to read and write more important today than in the past? Why or why not? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
(In a sense, it is true that…)
As the world becomes smaller and smaller due to the process of globalization, it becomes more and more important that everyone learns how to read and write. If one is to keep up with the fast pace of the world, literacy skills are of utmost importance.
Technology is expanding at an ever-increasing rate. Computers, and the Internet, have become common terms in almost all nations in the world. If one wants to be able to communicate with others using this efficient method, one must learn the basics of reading and writing. The objects we have in our home are also becoming increasingly more complicated. For example, if one wants to use a DVD player with their television, one must be able to read the manual to learn how to work it. Even the most basic technologies come with an instruction guide: if one is unable to read, they will constantly be struggling to figure out how to work these technologies.
As mentioned above, the world is becoming much smaller. More people are finding it necessary to leave their homes in small towns and villages, moving to the big cities where there is more opportunity. Some of these people find it quite difficult to navigate around the city, as one must know how to read in order to understand the street signs. If one cannot find the place where one has to report for work, it would be very difficult to make a living.
Finally and perhaps most importantly, being able to read and write gives us the opportunity to think for ourselves. Wherever we are, people in authority positions tell us what we should believe. However, in many cases, it is not in our own best interest to follow the leader's ideas. People must learn to read and then examine the information for themselves. This is the only way that culture can evolve. Therefore, I think the skills of reading and writing are of vast importance, no matter where one lives in the world. The world population will continue to grow, and the only way to keep ahead is to learn to read and write.
此外,像“youknow,well”等口头语也尽量减少,或换为比较正式的连接词比如“asyou can see, as a matter offact”。
‘debateisthe artofpersuasion’。

? effectively addresses the topic and task;
? is well organized and well developed, using clearly appropriate explanations, exemplifications, and/or details;
? displays unity, progression, and coherence;
? displays consistent facility in the use of language, demonstrating syntactic variety, appropriate word choice, and idiomaticity, though it may have minor lexical or grammatical errors.
Which one of the following values do you think is the most important to share with a young child (aged 5-10)? Being helpful; being honest; being well-organized
Vicky
It is now easier for parents to raise children than it was fifty years ago because there are many more resources to help both the parents and the children succeed.
Parents have a wider range of resources than they did fifty years ago, many of which are readily available on the internet. Parents can look up answers to questions any time during the day or night without having to leave their home. They don’t have to go to a special facility or wait for business hours. For example, a parent concerned about a child’s progress in math can look up statistics about other children the same age, read about how other parents dealt with math issues, or join a chat session to discuss the problem. Parents can remain anonymous when using many of these resources, which is appealing when asking personal or challenging questions.
The internet also provides a vast array of resources for children. They can get tutoring help and practice lessons. They can even play fun games that teach valuable skills. If children are able to address their own weaknesses, it is easier for the parents. Parents fifty years ago had to sit and teach their children when the children had problems with homework assignments. If the parents were not familiar with the subject, they had to pay for a private tutor who could explain the material. By contrast, parents today can steer their children to educational websites that provide the answers in an interesting and interactive manner, freeing the parent to do other things.
Finally, today’s parents are fortunate because there is a greater awareness ofmedical educational barriers. For example, fifty years ago there was little understanding of attention deficit disorder or dyslexia. Modern research has identified such problems and is developing solutions. Parents in the past had to deal with “difficult children” without knowing that there was a biological cause. Now doctors can diagnose the problem and suggest ways to cope with it. As a result, parents today can adjust teaching methods rather than give up because the child doesn’t function as expected.
Today there is a vast array of resources for parents and children that was not available fifty years ago. As a result, it is easier for parents to find the information they need to raise their children in a positive way.

Your teacher assigns a project to you, and you can select the members to work with.
--choose the members who think and work in similar ways
--choose the members who have totally different ideas
Which would you think is more effective to work with?
It is more effective to complete a project with people who think and work in similar ways than to struggle to finish a task with people who have totally different ideas. Knowing each other and having similar interests facilitates the successful completion of a project.
Members who know each other well can divide the task and set up a reasonable working plan to ensure that the project will be completed on time. If members know the others’ strengths and weaknesses, they can decide which part to assign to which person to best get the task done. I specifically remember being in a team of three students who had to complete an assignment that included a written essay and a power point presentation. I was a good speaker but terrible at using the computer, so I gave the presentation. However, the power point slides were all generated by our friend who was shy but very capable with the computer. The third person was very detail-oriented, so she was the natural choice to organize the information into an essay.
Not only are team members who have similar ideas able to divide tasks effectively, but they also can create a solid common goal. If people are too different, it is hard to decide on a good thesis or theme, and the result might be a compromise that everyone is dissatisfied with. By contrast, people who think in similar ways can agree on a topic and develop it out, and it becomes very strong. In the assignment mentioned above, the three members quickly agreed on a common theme. We invested our working time into researching the theme rather than debating what to write about. Since we all were interested in the topic, we all invested our best efforts rather than just trying to get it over with, and the result was an A grade.
People with similar ideas and interests make the best team to solve a problem or complete a task because they know each other’s abilities, so canallot tasks accordingly. Even more important, they can select a topic that they are all interested in, so everyone wants to participate rather than do only the minimum to get the task done.

题目
A government plans to spend money for all adults over 25-year-old to take a training course about the most up-to-date skills for the workplace. Do you think it is an effective plan? Why or why not?
I think that it would be an effective use of money if the government paid for all adults over 25 years old to take training courses to update their work skills. Although such a program would involve certain expenses, the benefits for individuals and society would outweigh any negatives associated with a well-run continuing education program.
First, I want to qualify that such a program would be optional rather than mandatory. People who do not want to take classes would likely not pay attention or would avoid attending, wasting money that could be better spent elsewhere. Therefore, the program should be optional for anyone who is truly interested in improving skills. It is good for the government to offer such a program for all adults rather than to ones in certain fields or holding certain ranks. That way, the government ensures that everyone has a fair chance to develop without prejudice. For example, if only managers could participate, it might limit the average worker’s ability to advance to higher levels.
It is also important that the skills offered in the program are relevant to the individual’s career path and interests. Given such a program, adults could perform their duties better. They would be more efficient and productive. Companies would have a larger pool of trained workers to draw upon for all departments. Especially in this world of rapidly-changing technology and innovative new equipment and materials, it is important that workers learn the newest methods rather than stagnate. Workers with the latest knowledge in the field would be positioned to further development and increase production.
If production increases, the economy will prosper. Businesses can thrive as people make goods and services and earn salaries that allow them to buy those products, creating an upward spiral.
If all adults improve work skills, not only the marketing sector but also such areas as the arts and health-care sectors will improve. Lives will be enriched on all levels by better entertainment and better standards of living. The government benefits from increased income from taxes. At the same time, it has decreased expenses related to caring for the unemployed or sick.
By paying for adults to take training courses relevant to their jobs, the government creates a win-win situation in which the workers are able to find jobs and perform them efficiently. Productive companies lead to a strong economy that is able to support its own government. Therefore, governments should consider financing training courses for all adults.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:
Nowadays, children rely too much on the technology, like computers, smartphone, video games, for fun and entertainment; Playing simpler toys or playing outside with friends would be better for the children's development.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
范文1:Argument 1 (for)
Children today rely too much on technology for entertainment. If children played with simple toys or spent time outside with friends, they would be physically healthier, be better at social interactions, and would have a working basis for many practical sciences.
Probably the most obvious benefit of stepping away from technology and into the outdoors is an increase in physical activity, which directly transfers to increased health.Countless studies have shown that excessive sitting and watching a screen leads to obesity, heart disease, and other disorders(不运动的坏处). If kids are restricted in their use of technology, they will have to move more. They will have better eye-hand coordination from manipulating toys and throwing balls; they will have more muscle tone from running and riding bicycles or balancing on skateboards. Increased activity directly translates into increased physical health(运动的益处万能句).
Another reason that children should be encouraged to use less technology is so that they increase their social skills. If children interact, they naturally learn basic skills such as sharing and taking turns(社交的益处万能句1). In addition, their compassion and understanding will also grow(社交的益处万能句2). Children who interact with each otherbecome more articulate in speaking and expressing a wide range of ideas(社交的益处万能句3). Such opportunities do not exist when the child is hidden inside the house playing video games; such interaction is only possible face-to-face. Therefore, children should be encouraged to play with each other rather than entertaining themselves using technology.
A final benefit of using simple toys is that children get a wide range of experiences that form the backbone of later study about sciences such as physics and engineering. By playing with blocks, bicycles, and balls, kids learn about balance, velocity, and gravity. Of course, the kids are not mastering the math behind the principles. However, they are developing a sound working knowledge that will help them understand the concepts in a way that they cannot do in the unreal world of video games where magic and fantasy are commonplace.
Playing with friends and simple toys, children become physically fit, develop social skills, and create a foundation for later study of the sciences. Therefore, children should be encouraged to spend more time doing such activities rather than entertaining themselves with technology.

范文2:Argument 2 (against)
Those who say that children now rely too much on technology are not taking into account the benefits that technology offers children. Contrary to banning access to video games and social media, parents should encourage children to master the skills that they will be required to use throughout their lives.
The most basic physical skills a child needs to succeed in life can be improved through access to technology. Video games increase eye-hand coordination, and recent studies are also showing that they can increase concentration and memory. Manipulating the buttons and toggles necessary to operate games, children are creating a foundation that allows them to manipulate other small objects and perform intricate tasks. This may seem like a far-fetched claim, but technology is now being used to simulate surgeries, so even doctors are benefitting from specialized programs. There is no reason that children cannot also develop excellent motor skills and concentration through technology.
Technology can also teach the fundamental groundwork for reading. To operate programs, children need to be able to read instructions. Even before they can read, children can grasp the idea that certain symbols are associated with certain results—this understanding is the foundation for understanding how letters and words form language. Rather than learn such basic concepts through boring drills, children can naturally develop them by playing increasingly difficult games. Children will enjoy reading more if it is associated with fun games than if it is something that they are forced to do independent of technology.
A final essential skill developed by technology is problem solving. Many games are set up so that kids have to find creative solutions to win. However, technology can develop problem-solving skills in other ways as well. For example, if a game freezes, the child needs to figure out how to make it functional again.(通过电子游戏解决问题例子1) The child also learns to anticipate and prevent problems from occurring, such as noticing that the battery of a device needs to be recharged before the device completely shuts down.(通过电子游戏解决问题例子2) Children who use technology become very adept at maneuvering a wide range of complications with ease and confidence.
Technology offers children a fun way to learn or improve basic life skills such as eye-hand coordination, increased memory capacity, reading, and problem solving. Therefore, children should be encouraged to use technology from an early age.

Many businessmen(businesswomen) feel their jobs are very stressful.
At this point in time,we should pull together for our goal.
这句话中“At this point in time”表示“现在”,我们完全可以用now来代替。
In the majority of cases,he likes to ride bike to the office.
He usually likes to ride bike to the office。
Original:
Solving trivial problems in the dorm will add your social experience and help you to understand other people's feelings and learn to be kind.
Revised:
Solving trivial problems in the dorm will enrich your social experience and help you to understand other people's feelings and learn to be considerate.
He has had many years of(actual) experience in business。
We assembled(together) all the parts for our radio.

“It is difficult for people to achieve professional success without sacrificing important aspects of afulfilling personal life.”
In conclusion, given the growing demands of career on today’s professionals, a fulfilling personal liferemains possible by working smarter, by setting priorities, and by making suitable career choices.
“Since science and technology are becoming more and more essential to modern society, schoolsshould devote more time to teaching science and technology and less to teaching the arts andhumanities.”
In conclusion, schools should not devote less time to the arts and humanities. These areas of studyaugment and enhance learning in mathematics and science, as well as helping to preserve therichness of our entire human legacy while inspiring us to further it. Moreover, disciplines within thehumanities provide methods and contexts for evaluating the morality of our technology and fordetermining its proper direction.
“Job security and salary should be based on employee performance, not on years of service.Rewarding employees primarily for years of service discourages people from maintainingconsistently high levels of productivity.”
In the final analysis, the statement correctly identifies job performance as the single best criterionfor salary and job security. However, the statement goes too far, it ignores the fact that a cost-of-living salary increase for tenured employees not only enhances loyalty and, in the end, productivity, but also is required by fairness.
How far should a supervisor go in criticizing the performance of a subordinate? Some highlysuccessful managers have been known to rely on verbal abuse and intimidation. Do you think thatthis is an effective means of communicating expectations? If not, what alternative should amanager use in dealing with someone whose work is less than satisfactory?
In conclusion, supervisors should avoid using verbal abuse and threats. These methods degradesubordinates, and they are unlikely to produce the best results in the long run. It is morerespectful, and probably more effective overall, to handle cases of substandard work performancewith clear, honest and supportive feedback.

Artists are the ones who use their innovative works and paintings to enlighten the general public while political leaders are people who focus on rolling out policies and making crucial decisions on the country’s domestic affairs. With the development of modern society, there is no denying that both of them play important roles in improving people’s living standards. However, as far as I am concerned, people benefit more from political leaders.
To begin with, political leaders play the indispensable role in improving people’s basic living standards. For one thing, with the most professional knowledge in economics and politics, political leaders are able to make decisions which are favorable to their citizens. For example, they may persuade the Parliament to higher the national minimum wage which improves the life of normal workers, they can also encourage the government to plan for extra budget which gives free education to poor students. This kind of action is extremely important during periods of economic recessions. When the USA experienced the Great Depression in the 20th century, President Roosevelt gave the famous Fire Chat to his citizens every day in order to strengthen their confidence in their nation’s future recovery. His strong will effectively brought the USA economy back to the normal track, which apparently shows that political leaders can influence the well-being of the citizens as well as the country as a whole.
Furthermore, political leaders are more powerful in creating a society with fairness and justice. As selected by the general public, the authorities must be trusted and followed by most people. Equipped with great personal charisma, political leader’s decisive decisions and unswerving faith can usually reshape the society and therefore make it a better place for everyone. This idea can be illustrated by the example of Nelson Mandela, who is the first president of South Africa. Despite the unfair destiny that he was imprisoned for 27 years, he still aimed at solving the racial conflict inside his country. After resuming freedom, Mandela urged the South African people to forget about hatred and set up new orders in that country. His words were so captivating that he won the support from both white and black people and now he is renowned as the “Father of South Africa”. Mandela was a typical example of political leader that utilized his power to save his citizens from endless chaos, from whom we can get the idea that political leaders are able to reshape the society to more fair and more free one.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that people benefit more from political leaders for the simple reason that they play more important roles in improving people’s living standards and making the society a better place for everyone.
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Visiting museum is the best way to learn about a country.
The approaches to learn about another country can vary from person to person. People varying in different personalities and characteristics tend to have distinctive strategies to learn the culture of another country. When it comes to the question of whether visiting museum is the best way to learn about a country, I, personally, think it is an overstatement since there are a galaxy of more effective and thrilling ways to learn about a foreign country.
First off, one can utilize the internet to search information and even find a pen pal to learn about a country, which is far more direct than visiting museums. With the advent of state-of-the-art technologies and the invention of cutting-edge technological gadgets like tablet, laptop, and even a smart phone, one can easily find relevant information about another culture. To be more specific, one can look up webpages that are dedicated to introduce specific parts of a foreign culture, like the fashion, politics, entertainment and art. Vivid pictures and videos depicting the local people’s ways of living and mindsets are available as long as one is willing to put some effort to do the research. Plus, one can find people from cultures all around the world on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. By friending them on these on-line social networks, one can communicate with them directly like sending messages or even facetiming with them, which is more interactive and thrilling.
Additionally, one can take a trip or join exchange programs to get first-hand exposure to the culture of a foreign country. As the saying goes: “the world is a book; those who do not travel read only a page”. Indeed, there are so much one can explore when traveling abroad. When traveling, you can take your time and interact with the local people. In this process, you can get to know their ways to deal with people and get exposures to their perspectives and philosophies about life. Plus, you can explore the local cuisines like the Thai pad thai, Italian pizza, Belgian macaroons and Chinese dumplings you find on your travels. Cuisine culture is also a big part of a country and the flavor of Thai paid thai is definitely not the same from the one you tried in your home country, obviously, it tastes more genuine from the place of its origin.
Admittedly, one can get a chance to appreciate the cultural relics and the local artworks in the museum, however these antiques are only representations of the past and they don’t reflect much about the current culture of the country.
In a nutshell, visiting museum is definitely not the best way to learn about a country since utilizing the internet and traveling to the country in person is far better and more direct ways to learn a country.
Summarize the points made in the lecture you just heard, explaining how they cast doubt on points made in the reading passage.
Reading:
You will have 3 minutes to read the passage.
The term “database” is one of the many increasingly common words dealing with technology coined in our time. The term refers to an organized collection of data. The data is typically organized to model relevant aspects of reality in a way that supports processes requiring this information. The modem medical field in particular has benefited a great deal from this innovation.
Traditionally, medical data was usually recorded on paper, which naturally required an adequate supply of paper and enough space for its storage. So, hospitals had to spend a lot of money on purchasing the paper, having it delivered, and storing it. In addition, paper was made from processed wood, and was not environmentally friendly. Thankfully, due to the advancements in record-keeping technology, if we need to look up a patient's medical history, there's no need to waste time and energy storing and referencing paper records; we can simply search a database to find the required information. In this way, computer-based databases of medical records are more economical and efficient than traditional paper records.
Precision is a necessity in the medical field, as any tiny mistake could become life-threatening. The traditional way of documenting medical records on paper increased the probability of handwritten mistakes. Conversely, when medical records are stored in a database, all records are entered directly into computers, and the computers process the whole message at once. This eliminates common handwriting mistakes and in doing so, leads to better medical care for patients.
No advanced medical accomplishments can be achieved without years of research. However, research requires numerous experiments and the resulting quantities of data can be difficult for humans to analyze on their own. With the assistance of medical databases and modem computing power, scientists can analyze these vast stores of data in greater depth and with greater speed than ever before, which can lead to medical breakthroughs that benefit all of humanity.
In the reading passage, the author mentions that “database” means an organized collection of data and it particularly benefits modem medicine in many ways. The professor disagrees, and points out flaws with the computerized database approach.
First, the reading suggests that the use of paper for medical records is inefficient, expensive, and bad for the environment; in contrast, the use of databases to store medical records is more economical and efficient. Countering this argument, the professor says that doctors are used to jotting down their findings on paper, and it is inconvenient for them to log onto a computer and type in data that could have been written by hand much faster.
The next point in the reading is that traditionally, medical data was recorded by hand, and was prone to life-threatening errors just because of sloppy handwriting being misread. On the other hand, the professor argues, digital medical databases will do little to solve this problem. He points out that most doctors have nurses or assistants transcribe their handwritten notes into computers anyway, meaning the likelihood of handwriting being misread is still quite high.
Finally, the author suggests that medical record databases are much more convenient for ongoing scientific research, as this information is more easily accessible for analysis. But in the lecture, it’s pointed out that medical records are confidential by law, so most researchers will never have access to information on a medical database anyway. Therefore, databases are not helping to solve any current problems.
Introduction
Body Paragraph 1
Body Paragraph 2
Conclusion
Social rules play an important role in every society, but whether or not the rules for young people are reasonable can be controversial. Some people believe that social rules for young people today are too strict, while others think they are reasonable. I believe that social rules for young people are not only reasonable, but good, because they help young people behave themselves and prevent them from hurting themselves.
First and foremost, social rules exist as a way to instruct young people in proper conduct. For example, society expects young people to go to school every day and spend most of their day studying—this is to his or her own benefit. If this rule didn’t exist, young people might waste all their time playing video games or participating in other unimportant activities instead of spending their time learning how to read, write, and do mathematics. In this way, social rules help young people to use their time well and make good preparations for the future.
Another reason that social rules are good for young people is that they protect them from hurting themselves. As has always been the case, young people today are likely to make foolish decisions if they do not have rules that set clear boundaries for their behaviors。For example, many students today get involved in drugs. Without rules against these substances, even more students would try these things. Drugs can do long-term damage to young people's futures because their minds and bodies can be severely damaged; some even die from overdosing。Good parents will always emphasize the insurmountable importance of schoolwork and remind their kids that sports and games are only a way to release stress from studies.Social rules should therefore not be seen as strict and restrictive, but as good guides for young people that are in place to help both the individual as well as society as a whole.
说到过渡词Transitional words,一般主要有以下三种类型,即表顺序:firstly, secondly, finally(last but not least); 表并列:besides, in addition; 表对比:in contrast, in comparison。
The independent essay usually asks for your opinion about a familiar topic. You will have 30 minutes to plan, write, and revise your response. Typically, a good essay for the independent topic will require that you write 300–350 words.
Question:
You are planning to study abroad. What do you think you will like and dislike about this experience? Why? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
My mother once told me that she could always find my eyes shining at the mention of going abroad for further education. There is no denying the fact that I have strong desire of my oversea trip and have planed of it for a long period since I began my high school time. In fact, I am only a typical example of those young students who have the some dream. A result of recent survey, released by a famous magazine in my hometown showed that more than 72 percent local high school students has pleasant association with studying abroad. Anyway, such decisions can benefit a young man a great deal while it is not without its problems.
Will oversea colleges and universities, especially those in America, provide Chinese student a more refined education? The data I select over this year leads to me believe that the answer is undoubtedly positive, since those abroad universities, which enjoy high reputations world-widely, have faculty and advanced facility. It is the education with totally different conceptions that will exert positively influence on one by widening his or her horizon, whereby he/she can put him/herself in a favorable position in the future job markets.
Secondly, which is another conspicuous advantage of the oversea life, it can bring one friends from a variety of countries. Seldom can one have an adjust judgement to a remote nation without consorting with the people from that area. As my cousin, who has been living in England for over seven years, pointed out, she learns a lot from her foreign friends.
However, we immature students should be blind to the dilemma we may face toward in the future. Living in a foreign country means one should try hard to adapt him/herself to a new environment and, in addition, probably have to suffer from the segregation with family.
After the both sides of abroad life are viewed, it is time to draw my conclusion. In short, the study in a foreign university will be a precious experience to a young man as long as he/she can overcome the difficulty he/she may encounter.
Some items (such as clothes or furniture) can be made by hand or by machine. Which do you prefer——items made by hand or items made by machine? Use reasons and specific examples to explain your choice.
From my point of view, there are many factors affecting whether to choose an item made by hand or by machine. The main factor to make a judgment is whether we use the item for our daily life or for collection and decoration purposes.
For items used in our daily life, the choices we make depend on the following factors: function, form, and price. Function is the most important thing for us. If a product is beautiful, but it is not able to perform the function, it can only be called a decoration, or a piece of garbage. For example, when we buy a TV, what we really care about first it is the quality of the picture and sound, how many stations it can receive, and whether it can be connected easily to the VCR and DVD player at home. The second factor that affects our choice of a product for daily use is its form. Is the TV too big, too small, or too ugly? Will it fit into the living room? Will it be compatible with the colors of other appliances and the furniture? The third factor we may consider is the price. Even if we are very happy with the item, there is no meaning if we cannot afford it.
So, in our daily life, there is really no difference whether our clothes or furniture are made by hand or made by machine. It just doesn't matter as long as they can perform their function. For items for collection and decoration, it is a completely different story. Ancient tools and historical artifacts have more market and educational value than modern day massively produced products, and traditional handicrafts make good tourist souvenirs and beautiful decoration for the house. Therefore, when it comes to items for collection and decoration, I would definitely choose items made by hand, because they are just so special.
In conclusion, depending on different items and different uses, I will make different choices.
What do I consider the most important room in the house? Why is this room more important to me than any other rooms? As the questions pops up before me, so do the images of the various rooms in my house. I think that I consider the dining room to be the most important room of the house.
First of all, this is the room where all the members of the family sit down together, at least for dinner. This brings closeness among the various members of the family. It also gives each of the members an opportunity to relate his/her experiences during the day and share those of others. It is here where tensions die down when mother cracks a joke or dad relates a humorous incident of his job.
Secondly, this is where we feed and nourish ourselves. It serves as a point where you stop, even for a minute (like morning rush hours), and grab your bread and milk. The dining room serves as a showroom of the kitchen bringing the not-so-good looking vegetables appear mouthwatering. This is where you take your food normally.
Thirdly it is the room to which you turn too when a large number of relatives arrive. Set up some more chairs and you are ready to take care of all of them. Can you do this in the bedroom or the bedroom? Some will suggest outdoors as an alternative but do all people have the luxury of a lawn? And what if it's raining? Turn to the dining room!
In concluding, I would like to say that the dining room seems to be the most important of all rooms in the house. It is a nourishment point, an expansion unit and a family hub, all combined into one. I consider it as the server of the modern home, networking all aspects into one entit
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The government should spend money helping more people access the Internet instead of improving public transportation.
Although, in recent decades, there has been a growing need for Internet access and the government has been strongly advised to increase its budget in this area, I personally think that it is more essential for the government to spend money on the improvement of public transportation than on more access to Internet.
我们可以很清楚的看到W同学对题目的正解,it is more essential…。 那么高分的作文就是effectively address the topic and task。
For one thing, public transportation influences our life in a deeper and wider aspect than it is assumed. In fact, the great impact on the Internet is still not as comparable as public transportation. What is easily recognized is people’s need to commute back and forth between their homes and workplaces, or to travel from one city to another. Convenient public transportation shortens the distance between different locations, makes our traveling experience more acceptable and even enjoyable, and saves us plenty of time for a tasty meal or a good rest instead of wasting a large amount of time on a long tedious journey. What most people may not be easily aware of, on the other hand, is that public transportation also influences the quality of consumer goods taken from the factories or farmland over a long journey to its target customers. Take the infant formula of milk powder as an example, it is the common wishes of mothers to let their babies enjoy the freshest and highest-quality milk. However, if the production base of milk is a little bit far from the milk origin, the quality of the milk will likely deteriorate if there is no convenient public transportation such as expressways or airlines. Even after the milk power is produced, it may still have a long way to go to reach the babies, and without reliable public transportation, the packaging might easily break up or the products might be moistened due to increased humidity on the way.
在段落的开始,她直接给出了分论点public transportation influences our life in a deeper and wider aspect than it is assumed.
According to the aforementioned discussions, it is apparent that public transportation not only plays an important role in our individual life, but can also contribute to making the earth a greener place. Therefore, the government should spend money on improving public transportation instead of increasing internet access.

Rent control is the system whereby the local government tells building owners how much they can charge their tenants in rent. In the United States, rent controls date back to at least World War II.
In 1943 the federal government imposed rent controls to help solve the problem of housing shortages during wartime. The federal program ended after the war, but in some locations, including New York City, controls continued. Under New York's controls, a landlord generally cannot raise rents on apartments as long as the tenants continue to renew their leases. In places such as Santa Monica, California, rent controls are more recent. They were spurred by the inflation of the 1970's, which, combined with California's rapid population growth, pushed housing prices, as well as rents, to record levels. In 1979 Santa Monica's municipal government ordered landlords to roll back their rents to the levels charged in 1978. Future rents could only go up by two-thirds as much as any increase in the overall price level.
In any housing market, rental prices perform three functions: (1) promoting the efficient maintenance of existing housing and stimulating the construction of new housing, (2) allocating existing scarce housing among competing claimants, and (3) rationing use of existing housing by potential renters.
One result of rent control is a decrease in the construction of new rental units. Rent controls have artificially depressed the most important long-term determinant of profitability — rents. Consider some examples. In a recent year in Dallas, Texas, with a 16 percent rental vacancy rate but no rent control laws, 11,000 new housing units were built. In the same year, in San Francisco, California, only 2,000 units were built. The major difference? San Francisco has only a 1.6 percent vacancy rate but stringent rent control laws. In New York City, except for government-subsidized construction, the only rental units being built are luxury units, which are exempt from controls. In Santa Monica, California, new apartments are not being constructed. New office rental space and commercial developments are, however. They are exempt from rent controls.

By 1776 the fine art of painting as it had developed in western Europe up to this time had been introduced into the American colonies through books and prints, European visitors and immigrants, and traveling colonists who brought back copies (and a few original) of old master paintings and acquaintance with European art institutions.
By the outbreak of the Revolution against British rule in 1776, the status of the artists had already undergone change. In the mid-eighteenth century, painters had been willing to assume such artisan-related tasks as varnishing, gilding teaching, keeping shops, and painting wheel carriages, houses, and signs. The terminology by which artists were described at the time suggests their status: limner was usually applied to the anonymous portrait painter up to the 1760's; painter characterized anyone who could paint a flat surface. By the second half of the century, colonial artists who were trained in England or educated in the classics rejected the status of laborer and thought of themselves as artists. Some colonial urban portraitists, such as John Singleton Copley, Benjamin West, and Charles Wilson Peale, consorted with affluent patrons. Although subject to fluctuations in their economic status, all three enjoyed sufficient patronage to allow them to maintain an image of themselves as professional artists, an image indicated by their custom of signing their paintings. A few art collectors James Bowdoin III of Boston, William Byrd of Virginian, and the Aliens and Hamiltons of Philadelphia introduced European art traditions to those colonists privileged to visit their galleries, especially aspiring artists, and established in their respective communities the idea of the value of art and the need for institutions devoted to its encouragement.
Although the colonists tended to favor portraits, they also accepted landscapes, historical works, and political engravings as appropriate artistic subjects. With the coming of independence from the British Crown, a sufficient number of artists and their works were available to serve nationalistic purposes. The achievements of the colonial artists, particularly those of Copley, West, and Peale, lent credence to the boast that the new nation was capable of encouraging genius and that political liberty was congenial to the development of taste — a necessary step before art could assume an important role in the new republic.

Sample 1: Our society develops quickly, and people’s life has changed greatly.
Sample 2: With the rapid development of society, enormous change has happened in people’s life.
Sample 3: As society progresses remarkably, tremendous changes have taken place in people’s life.

Under the current society full of intense competitions, how to achieve success has never failed to arouse deep concern and interest among the general public. Thereof, a good deal of accomplished businessmen and elites are strong believers of the claim that to be a successful person, one must be open to new ideas and willing to change his or her mind.Towards such a complicated issue, I am in favor of the above claim for the following reasons.
In the first place, being receptive to new ideas can help people to better adapt to the constantly changing environment and thus become successful. As is common sense, no matter what fields or areas you are engaged in, change has become the perpetual topic, which means that what you held firmly onto before may become outdated and even misleading overnight. In other words, only those people with open mind towards new things can keep pace with the changes of time and are more likely to achieve success. By contrast, rejecting any new ideas and never changing one's mind, people will be gradually surpassed or even replaced by other competitors. A good case in point is the collapse of Nokia Company, the once most famous cell phone brand. On account of showing no acceptance to the new operating system Android, the Nokia has announced bankruptcy and has been acquired by Microsoft Company. The same logic can apply to any individuals who are stubborn.
Besides that, embracing new ideas can help people to build harmonious rapport with more people, leading to the higher likelihood of becoming successful. More scrutiny has made it conspicuous that an attitude of open-mindedness is strongly correlated to one's popularity among others, especially in a work team. The underlying reason is that anyone who has a willingness to listen to new thoughts tends to leave a good impression and thereof gains help or assistance from others when faced with troubles in the path to success. Also, being open-minded helps you work through interpersonal or intra-team conflicts that arise when people work in close quarters. By contrast, insisting on one' own view stubbornly usually not only build a barrier for establishing the friendship but also serves as the origin of quarrel or conflicts with other people. Put it another way, people without a spirit of listening and cooperation have difficulty in completing any projects, let alone, become successful.
Indeed, accepting new ideas may make people feel uncomfortable, because they are forced to get out their comfort zone. However, the above reasoning does not bear deep analysis. To illustrate, it is an indisputable fact that success relies on nothing but innovation driven by constantly taking in original and creative ideas and thoughts. Consequently, factoring what has been mentioned above, we can conclude that showing acceptance to new ideas and changing one's mind accordingly are of great necessity for the sake of achieving success.
Everyone is longing for success; therefore, everyone eagerly searches for every method to reach that end. Having an inclusive and open would definitely serve as a good panacea for everyone who wants to achieve something in the life. Nevertheless, it is not the only way toward one’s heyday, for one’s success derives from the combined factors, like tenacity and resilience.
Admittedly, a man with an open mind for new ideas is half way for success, for these innovative ideas and philosophies offer one with another outlook when facing a deadlock or dilemma. What’s the most important, new idea brings about creation to our life. The modern society has witnessed the rapid and pervasive changes of technologies along with subtle social reforms. It is the new ideas from other people and other places that lead James Dyson, the inventor if G-force vacuum cleaner, to a great success; it is embracing the new method from the excellent athletes that helps Jimmy Li create his special set “Jimmy Li Jump”.Furthermore, changing our mind and listening to the new ideas from others is conducive to cooperate with other people. A man cannot succeed without the assistance from others. An open mind for new ideas and thoughts are easy for people to share different ideas, therefore, it is beneficial for cooperating within certain groups or teams. A cooperative people would certainly get more help, thus to succeed in a more earlier way. However, an open mind for outside ideas is surely the only way for one to succeed, for there are a lot of other people gaining success through other ways!
Being tenacious and persistent represent a continuous effort in one’s specific career. The secret to happiness is hard work and effort, not “quick-fixes”. Great ideas only cannot guarantee one’s efforts and actions. Only by the down-to-earth efforts and hard work can the final success gained! If James Dyson did not experiment for over 5200 times after he got a new idea from others, we would not have witnessed the birth of this new and highly efficient vacuum cleaner. Therefore, tenacity and persistence provide a sure way to one’s success.
Furthermore, a positive and optimistic attitude towards failure can also serve as a facilitator for one’s success. A lot of people failed because they feared the new challenges or feared to fail again. People with negative attitudes may be loath to take action even if they embrace new ideas from others. A positive mindset can serve as a catalyst for one’s success. If James Dyson didn’t hold hopes for his production promotion and give up during his experiment, we would have seen his products prevail the global market. Thus, a sound mindset and positive attitude propels one to success.
In a nutshell, a successful person is not made just in one day. A lot of factors contribute to a successful people, like new ideas, tenacity and a positive mind, to name just a few. Only in this way can a person expect success as soon as possible!

Taking a panoromic view of human history, we can readily find that the natural environment plays an enormously important role in determing the future of each and every country. Given the great significance of clean environment, the general public as well as the governors begin to wonder which is the most essential action to protect the environment, among funding new energy research, preserving natural habitat or enacting strict laws. Towards such a long-running tug-of-war, I am inclined to argue that national governments should invest financial support in developing new energy sources.
Initially, spending more money in discovering new energy can radically solve the various environmental problems. As is common sense, the deteriorating environment is the result of the overexploitation of fossil fuels, including coal, oil and natural gas. To be specific, numerous chemical plants usually burn the coal to provide power for manufacturing all kinds of goods designed to satisfy the basic needs of the general public. As a result, a large amounts of industrial wastes are discharged to take a toll on the natural environment. Also, an increasing number of petrol-powered automobiles will definitely emit car exhause(e.g. fumes and toxic gas), which can increase the likelihood of the public suffering from respiratory diseases. All the above problems related to environment can be resolved by find new and clean energy like solar energy, wind power and tidal power. Undoubtedly, replacing the traditional energy with the new ones can dramatically decrease the pollution and contamination, thus leading to a better living environment. For example, once the cars uses the electricity instead of petrol, the air quality will improve to a large extent.
Secondly, there are conspicuous limitation of the other two options. As for preserving natural places, the effect of this practice is relatively restricted. To illustrate, the traditional energy sources are usually exploited and discovered in the natural places. Consequently, the preservation of natural places will hinder the access to various energy and thus impede the progress of the whole society. Also, the same logic applies to passing laws to reduce pollution. It is an indisputable fact that across the globe, many countries now are heaviely dependent on the industries and factories which produce pollutions. In other words, once the law of punishing these companies is enforced, these corporation may have to cut down their output and make less profits, even ending up going bankcrupt. Accordingly, the national economy and the living standard of the public will suffer too.
Factoring what has been discussed above, we can conclude that funding research of environmental friendly energy will be more preferable, because finding proper alternative energy is the key to solving the environmental problems comprehensively.
The statement above attempts to assert whether funding on environmental friendly resources, preserving wildlife species, or enforcing laws to be the most crucial way to protect the environment has long been centered in dispute. Too often people hold the idea inventing new energy resources and passing laws could be effective ways to eradicate environmental related issues. However, as far as I am concerned protecting plants and animals would be a much more direct and sufficient solution.
To the extent that species extinction is the result of anthropogenic events such as direct or indirect human activities and further threaten the delicate balance which all animal including human beings depend upon. Thus protecting the forests and natural wildlife species has the priority to be dealt with. For example, the extinction of the dodo, a flightless bird endemic to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, was directly attributable to human activity. As the nature is an intricate matrix of interdependent relationships, in which each species depends on many others for its survival, the dying out of Dodo caused a certain native tree whose seeds dispersed by Dodo, extinct either. Nowadays, many species face the similar circumstance either and it greatly results in human being’s greedy. To make mechanic profit, the underground dealers trade the skin of the Siberian Tiger, and horn of the Tibetan Antelope and the African Elephant, making those animals hardly ensure the preservation. For protecting the balanced ecosystem, human beings should place a very high affirmative duty to protect wildlife species.
In addition, many species possess great values to human race, some of which are not realized by human yet, requiring people to protect them without any effort. Thermal insulation and conductive resistance enables latex, extracting from the rubber tree, to be the essential component of industrial products for daily uses, such as rubber gloves and rubber sheath. Not only plants play an important role in industrial field, but works for medical perspective as well, especially function as Chinese herbal medicine. For instance, marijuana provides relief from pain and Lianqiao helps with heat removing. If cutting down most of the rubber trees and herbal species, we will leave limited resources for our future generation. For the reason above, it is essential for human beings contribute more on wildlife species protection to handle environmental resources shortage problems.
Admittedly, allocate money on new energy and pass laws to reduce pollution have the merit, however, they are impractical. Take spending on natural energy as an example. On the one threshold, with the technology we have now, the energy sources are not stable and even costly. Wind and solar energy cannot be obtained on a calm and cloudy day. On the other one, they cost the country a lot. I do not deny that wind and solar energy, cleaner energy as they are, would be a wiser choice for developed counties who have money and resources to solve the carbine dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and toxic gases relevant problems and to a great extend release environmental pressure, such as global warming jeopardy. However, when it comes to developing countries, poverty, higher unemployment rate, and high inflation are all problems that developing countries need to worry about. The better solution is to encourage factories to produce more goods and services. To cut down the costs, it is inevitable to produce air and water pollutions. Passing laws and inventing impede the economic growth on a large scale.
In sum, considering the financial and practical analyzing, it is safe to conclude that preserve wildlife species is the most important action to protect the natural environment rather than creating new energy and enforcing laws.

Successful artists aren't underpinned by talent, it is an excuse not to put in the effort that is needed to be a successful artist. There are other more important factors like, to be able to seek out social connections, and build on them. Connecting with peers and mentors is more important than being talented.

又比如在表示色彩的词中green是青春的颜色,常表示希望、活力,但在英语中green又与“妒忌” (to be green with envy,green-eyed)和“没有经验的”(a green horn)联系起来。 此类的例子还有pavement/sidewalk, Chemists‘ shop/drug store等。
比如large和big都指“大”,但large通常用来修饰诸如number, amount及quantity(a large number of students,a large amount of money,a large quantity of wine, etc)。
而英语准确的表达应是she brought me the letter. He will send his friend to the airpot。 He will go to the airpot with his friend to see him off. 实际上send sth to a place 应该是请别人送去,自己不去。
At some universities, students take part in making decisions about the issues that affect daily life of everyone on campus, such as how many hours that the libraries should be open each day or what kinds of food should be served in the cafeteria. But at some universities, experts are hired to make this decisions, students almost never involved. Which approach do you prefer and why.
We can never over emphasize the importance of campus life during which people mature intellectually and psychologically. It is a university’s unshakable responsibility to provide qualified education and various facilities. For a university to function well, there must be effective and reasonable rules regulating behaviors of both students and staffs. In my mind, it is students, but not experts, who should be responsible for the making of rules.
Admittedly, inviting professional and experienced experts to make rules is an easy solution for universities to effectively manage students and staffs. Given years of work experience, experts not only understand students’ needs and preferences, but also know well how to help students regulate behaviors, such as cultivating good habits, managing time and having healthy diets. For example, to encourage students to have enough time to sleep, experts usually require libraries to close at 10 o’clock; also, to help students keep healthy, they demand dining halls to provide nutritious food, such as organic vegetables and fruits.
However, it is actually difficult for experts to truly think from students’ perspective, so some of their rules may be not appropriate. On the contrary, students, though inexperienced, deserve the right to make rules for themselves and the opportunity to improve their abilities to manage. To begin with, it is students who study and live on campus that can enact rules flexible and reasonable enough to help students improve efficiency in both study and social activities. However, experts, as observers of students, may be unavoidably theoretical. For instance, during exam weeks, it is inconvenient to close libraries at 10 o’clock, as many students need more time and a quiet place to finish their assignments and prepare for exams, which is usually ignored by experts.
Secondly, it is also universities’ duty to help students learn self-management and leadership by giving them the right to enact rules for all students on campus. Undoubtedly, student government ought to take the responsibility to collect students’ opinions from polls, negotiate with students having different requirements, and finally introduce rules that can be respected and observed by all. Since these are rules made by students themselves, there is no reason to complain and violate. Moreover, this is a rare opportunity for members of student government to enhance leadership and management capability. Though the process will be surely time consuming and even arouse various problems, it is worthy given the huge benefits to students.
To sum up, endowing students the right to make rules for themselves is a better option for universities to accommodate students’ needs and help them grow up.

说到过渡词Transitional words,一般主要有以下三种类型,即表顺序:firstly, secondly, finally(last but not least); 表并列:besides, in addition; 表对比:in contrast, in comparison。
Spend money or save them
Spend money or save them?
Is it better to enjoy your money when you earn it or is it better to save your money for some time in the future? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
Some people say that it is better to enjoy your money as soon as you earn it while others prefer to save the money for later. It's a difficult choice faced by lots of people because of the different attitudes they hold towards money. As far as I am concerned, I vote for the former choice, which is that it is better for one to enjoy his or her money as soon as it is earned. Spending money as soon as possible is my preference because of three reasons as follows.
First, we can observe easily in the modern society that the dominant philosophy nowadays is 'enjoy your life when you are still young'. Most young adults like to work for a period of time and then go on for a trip to visit some places they have never been to. Those trips not only help them to keep in shape but also provide them different kinds of knowledge and new perspective in looking at their environment. Other people spend the money for their leisure, which helps them to relax and go back to work with enough energy.
In the old days, it is said that people who save money in a bank understand the philosophy of thrift. Actually, economists say that in the modern world saving money in a bank is the quickest way to lose it. Moreover, none of the rich people became rich by getting interests from the bank. Living in a constantly changing world, we should adjust ourselves to accept the new ways of investing our money to different areas in order to get the most of it. That is probably the reason why most of the people nowadays put their money into business to get a better payback.
The third obvious(显然的)reason why I prefer spending money rather than saving them is that it is part of the contribution for the economic growth in our country. If nobody has the needs to buy stuff from others and the market, nobody will think about how to produce useful products and sell them to make the most profits. Some countries continue to lower the interests in order to force people to spend their money and therefore benefit the society as well as the people themselves. In this broad view, I prefer spending money rather than saving them.
In conclusion, I prefer spending money because it benefits ourselves as well as people around us. It's also important for kids to know how to save money as a sense of thrift. Nevertheless, spending money is still the best way to make our lives enjoyable and worthwhile.
Change about your school
If you could make one important change in a school that you attended, what change would you make? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.
Change about your school
Talking of making an important change in my school, I'd like to suggest that our education system put more emphasis on the development of learning skills and applications of theories into practice instead of simply learning knowledge from books. The proposal is based on the reasons as follows.
For one thing, overemphasis on academic learning poses a threat because of confusing the purpose of learning. As school credit is usually considered the major criteria of academic learning, in a credit-driven school, one may try hard to learn simply for learning's sake. In other words, college students tend to blindly cram their brains with numerous texts and formulas while do not have a clear idea of what they really want to learn, why they need to learn, not to mention how the things they are learning are useful to the reality. An example is way that common ESL students learn English: they may spend several years in reciting grammar rules, but can hardly utter an English word in front of a foreigner.
Another reason that causes me to make the suggestion is the requirement of today's ever-changing knowledge economy time. With the increasingly accelerated pace of information explosion, one can hardly depend on knowledge from books that he or she has learned at school. Mastering learning skills and knowing how to apply the skills into practice are becoming indispensable than ever before. A recent survey conducted by educators shows that most students in our country lack the ability of using tools and solving problems compared with their counterparts in the United States. This informs us to take a serious look at our book-knowledge based education pattern.
In sum, it's high time for us to give a touch on our education pattern concerning the narrowness of book knowledge learning as well as the necessity of practical learning required by the contemporary world.
A、领导式 Bossy Style
Reducing class size is not just a matter of relieving(减轻)pressure. It will enhance what a student learns and even the person they learn it from can learn from this process. (The End)
In conclusion, university education should not be made free. I believe in that because the colleges need the money to make them better. If the universities are free, taxes will be raised and people will have to pay for things they might not use.
In conclusion, I have shown that it's better for teachers to encourage their students to question things. Without curiosity there can be no education.
Tender-loving-care Style
For those reasons, we can safely conclude that classmates are too important a factor to ignore and they have more important influence than teachers on students' success at school.
The beat generation style
Needless to say, both sources are important to us. But in my opinion, knowledge from experience is even more important because without experience, it's almost impossible to understand knowledge from books'or to understand how to apply this knowledge in real life.
Apparently, ../Clearly, .../Needless to say,…/It goes without saying that... However,…/But.../Yet.../Nevertheless, ... / Still,…
Gold-Digger Style
I would like to say that I personally agree with the statement that music tells us something about a culture, and with my example I wanted to illustrate how much of the culture of a country it is
possible to learn about just listening to its music.
I agree that formal education at an early age offers children benefits at all levels and therefore is more important than letting them play. After all, kids can always play after school but learning
at school stimulates(激发)their brain growth and puts them in competitive social settings, which is indeed irreplaceable experience for such a critical stage of life.
Goodie-Goodie Style
The time to live Independently depends on the person himself. He must decide whether they're ready to leave their parents to have an independent life or not. The decision will vary from one
person to another. A person should judge that he's capable of fulfilling his needs without being dependent on his parents; this indicates that he's ready for his independent life. Otherwise he
might need to stay longer with his parents.
Oncontemporary society, theleadership serves as a catalyst for our future success.” 那么需要我们去模板化提升句子档次,随便改一下虽然做不是最好,但是可以稍微掩人耳目,对于着急考试的孩子们是一个技巧性方法 “Withthe advent of the technologically advanced society, the leadership which servesas a catalyst for our future success has become an inevitable demand of timesfor several decades.”
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Playing games teaches us about life. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answers.
Some think that games teach us about life. Others think that life is simply a grand game that one must learn to play. In any case games are part of the lives of every human, whatever culture. Although the rules to games may be different, and the reasons for playing certain games diverse, it is indisputable that playing games teaches us about life.
First of all, playing games teaches us about teamwork. Most games demand more than one participant, and several require that one work in unison with one or more other people on a team. When one is member of a team, one learns to put the team first rather than personal success. For instance, I played right fullback on an intramural soccer team at Oxford University. Without the work of myself and teammates at the back, clearing balls and passing up to the wings, our speedy strikers could not score. Conversely, without the speed and scoring ability of our strikers, no matter how solid we played on defense, we could not win the game. Soccer, then, demands that the entire team work in unison, performing discreet tasks that further a team goal, rather than an individual one. Playing soccer helped me to learn about teamwork, and this knowledge has spilled over into my life in other ways. At my job, I constantly have to work with people. Working with people in my occupation is similar to playing soccer. Team goals become more important than personal ones, and learning to support each other during work time comes easily, as I had already learned these skills on the pitch.
Playing games also teaches us about preparation, which is vital both on the field and off of it. When I was twelve years old, I learned a valuable lesson about preparation from my basketball coach. After a particularly uninspired practice, my coach gathered us around. He said, “You play like you practice. And your sloppy practice will appear during the game.” He was right. At our next game, we fumbled our passes, became frustrated with each other, and lost the game. My teammates and I resolved to focus harder in practice, and steadily our play in games improved. My coach’s adage “you play like you practice” translates directly into life. Without specific preparation in work or at home, we rarely succeed. Preparation is paramount to success, and I learned this on the basketball court.
In summary, by teaching us about teamwork and preparation, games have direct relevance to life. For me, these lessons came on the sports field; for others they may come by participating in a variety of games, athletic or not. Games are a vital part of life, and they have many skills to impact that are applicable after the game is over.
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important for students to study history and literature than it is for them to study science and mathematics. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
While I was in middle school, I was told by my mathematics teacher, “ If you understand science and mathematics, you can make it anywhere in the world.” This is still true today. History and literature are very important, and need to be studied. However, if I have to choose between the two, I infer that it is more important to study science and mathematics since they are more practical. In fact it is easier to secure a job with skills in science and mathematics. Also, experts in science and mathematics have higher social statuses, and make more money.
The primary reason for studying science and mathematics is that those who do so land jobs more easily than shoes who study history and literature. Jobs are always available in fields such as medicine, engineering, and other professions that make it a requisite to have a science or mathematics background. Students who study history or literature can find jobs, but most of the jobs are either teaching or writing and seldom well-paying. For example, one friend of mine with a degree in history from a prestigious university was offered a job of teaching in a community college for 7,000 dollars a year whereas another friend of mine with a degree in chemistry from a good university got a job in company which paid him 14,000 dollars a year.
The second reason why it is more important to study science and mathematics is that scientists and mathematicians are valued more than experts in history and literature. For example, when asked what they do, experts in history and literature may receive little attention when they provide the information. In contrast, a scientist may excite a lot of interest among those who listen to his or her introduction. The reason for such a differential treatment is not personal, but is indicative of a social trend: scientists and mathematicians in general enjoy more social prestige than those who study history and literature.
The third reason for such a choice is that scientists and mathematicians generally make more money than people in other professions. Like the differential attention that they may receive, the two groups of people are assigned different values money wise. A doctor, a chemist, or a person in one of these fields often has a much higher salary than a professor of literature or an expert in history. Moreover, scientists and mathematicians generally have more projects to work on and therefore make even more money.
Our society places a great value on science and mathematics, so it is important to learn skills in these fields. With a science or mathematics background, one will secure a high-paying job, enjoy much social prestige, and receive a hefty salary. Such being the case, who would choose to study anything other than science and mathematics?
Nowadays, food has become easier to prepare. Has this change improved the way people live? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Nowadays, wherever we turn our gaze, we can see different types of food that are easier to prepare. For instance, we can buy frozen foods in a supermarket and just prepare it in a couple of minutes, whereas before it could have taken us maybe hours to prepare this kind of meals. I would accept that this so-called improvement has changed our lives, but I believe that there are some drawbacks as well.
It is true that these kinds of food do not involve hard work to prepare, but food that is easy to prepare generally has some artificial ingredients mixed in it that makes it “easy-to-cook”. If we take time to read the ingredients, we would definitely come across words like preservatives or artificial flavorings. It was just a couple of days ago that I came across a newspaper article which stated that someone was poisoned because he ate this type of food. He was hospitalized for almost a month.
Not having to cook has also taken the fun out of cooking. Cooking is an art, but in today's world, this is no more true. People are so busy with their work that they just rely on this simple foods. The invention and production of this foods have made people lazy not only for cooking but also for a well family get-together. It was not like former times when families would sit together and eat freshly baked food. Instead, they are getting these artificial things with minimal nutrients in them.
Cooking in the yesteryears was much better than today's. People would spend more time in the kitchen, preparing the food in the way that they liked it. This brought families closer together and also contributed to the high quality and nutrition of the food. Granted, people are busier nowadays and do not have as much time as they did in the past, but I believe that people have forgotten the importance of healthy, fresh food and of the time a family spends together preparing the food. So, I would say that having food that is easy to prepare has had many disadvantages.

Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Starry night, night watch, Hemmingway, the old man and the sea; 提到Scandal,就该想到Nixon,Watergate, bill Clinton, sex sandal,Enron。

2. Verbal & Quantity
Verbal 550; Quantity 780……
Sample 1: Our society develops quickly, and people’s life has changed greatly.
Sample 2: With the rapid development of society, enormous change has happened in people’s life.
Sample 3: As society progresses remarkably, tremendous changes have taken place in people’s life.

Agree or disagree: digital books will replace printed books in the future.
此类的例子还有pavement/sidewalk, Chemists' shop/drug store等。
