Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Young people should try several different jobs before they take a long term career.

(A/D) Young people should try different jobs before they take a long-term career.

Currently, with the competition in the job market becoming increasingly fierce, the job-hunting has been brought under the spotlight of the mass media. The senior and experts strongly proposed that young people should try different jobs before taking a lifelong career, while the youngsters may hold the opposite viewpoint. As far as I am concerned, the former view is more reasonable, with the reasons listed below.

In the first place, different jobs will equip the young with multiple skills and professional knowledge in various fields. As we know, the completion of every job, simple or complex, requires differing abilities and expertise in certain area. As a result, young adults who take different jobs will grasp the knowledge in a new area and increase their potential capability to a large extent, thus having the well-rounded development. To be specific, to be a waiter or waitress in a restaurant enables us to cultivate interpersonal skills since we may encounter tons of people from all walks of life. Being a manager will help to improve the organizational skills and leadership, because the successful running of a department depends on the ability of leaders. Undoubtedly, those people with more than one skills will have an edge over other competitors in the future job market.

In addition, another conspicuous benefit of taking different jobs before you settle on the lifelong career is that the young have the chances to find the most suitable position. It is never uncommon to hear that many employees who have worked for three or more years complain that the work they take is not what they are good at or what they like. Consequently, their enthusiasm or passion for their jobs is relatively in a low level, which has negative influence on the development of themselves and their company. The best way to deal with the above problem is to allow youngsters to try different types of work at first and take the one which suits them most. The experience of my friend, Kozer, is a good case in point. After graduating from the department of foreign languages in Beijing University, Kozer was recruited by a Foreign Trade Corporation due to his excellent English. Unfortunately, he was too introverted to communicate well with strangers, especially with foreigners. Then he resigned from the position and became a teacher in a high school. The same problem occurred again. Finally, realizing his own strengths and weaknesses from the above failures, he found that the most suitable position for himself was to be an editor for China Daily, the most famous English newspaper, because there was no need to talk with many people in this job.

Admittedly, some opponents may assert that it is not necessary for young adults to try different jobs, because it will waste lots of time and even make them miss out some opportunities. However, the above reasoning is far from the truth. To illustrate, only when we have experienced several different kinds of work can we find the one which most fits for us. So the time spent on every try is worthwhile.

In a nutshell, it is safe to conclude that young people should try different jobs before they take a long-term career, in order to gain more skills and find the most suitable position. (By Zhaobo,548words)

The benefits and drawbacks of job hopping have never failed to be the center of debate among employees and employers, and human resource managers of corporations. While some people believe that constant job hopping brings more benefits than pitfalls, others state that the disadvantages of switching between jobs before settling down greatly outweigh the benefits. Personally, I think trying out different positions is beneficial to one’s future career based on the following reasons.

Admittedly, switching between jobs will make your employers suspicious about your judgment and question your commitment and loyalty to the company, however, the taking different jobs gives a professional countless benefits, like diverse background, broadened social network, better compensation and benefits, etc.

First off, more job experience provides an individual exposure to different industries and more professional experience, eventually it is conducive for someone to find his or her real expectation and ultimate career goal in the long run. In a small company, employees might have intimate and close friendships with each other, and there is no standard procedure of daily business operation. However, in a colossal corporation, employees have a clear professional boundary and they have to follow strict regulations and procedures when conducting business. Having a chance to work in both small and big companies will help individuals to know which type of company fits them best and they can choose their future career according to their preference. Also, having working experience in different industries and various sized companies makes the employees more flexible and adaptable in distinctive working environments. Future employees will value those who have exposure to a variety of challenges and can bring new ideas and changes to the company.

Additionally, working in different companies and industries gives an individual more opportunities to explore new social networks and thus enjoy a much more promising career in the near future. An individual can expand his or her social and professional networks after having worked in different places, where one can plant roots and farm relationships and eventually these connections will prove to be very helpful in the near future. This is especially true in today’s overly competitive job market, a dynamic and active professional network will probably help you to land better jobs in the future.

In conclusion, it is more advisable to take different jobs before settling down permanently since it brings more exposure in different industries, rich professional experience and a more dynamic professional connection.

In an effort to encourage ecologicallysustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuingcertifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by onserving resources and recycling materials. Companies that receive thiscertification can attract customers by advertising their product as Ecocertified. Around the world, many wood companies have adopted new, ecologicallyfriendly practices in order to receive Eco certification. However, it is unlikelythat wood companies in the United Stated will do the same, for several reasons.

First, American consumers are exposed to somuch advertising that they would not value or even pay attention to the Ecocertification label. Because so many mediocre products are labeled “new” or“improved,” American consumers do not place much trust in advertising claims ingeneral.

Second, Eco certified wood will be moreexpensive than uncertified wood because in order to earn Eco certification, awood company must pay to have its business examined by a certification Agency. This additional cost gets passed on to consumers – American consumers tend tobe strongly motivated by price, and therefore they are likely to choose cheaperuncertified wood products. Accordingly, American wood companies will prefer tokeep their prices low rather than obtain Eco certification.

Third, although some people claim that italways makes good business sense for American companies to keep up with thedevelopments in the rest of the world, this argument is not convincing.Pursuing certification would make sense for American wood companies only ifthey marketed most of their products abroad. But that is not the case –American wood businesses sell most of their products in the United States, catering to a very large customer base that is satisfied with themerchandise.

- Main point:

- Sub point 1:

- Sub point 2:

- Sub point 3:

Children and sports

Some young children spend a great amount of their time practicing sports. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Children and sports

Currently some young children spend a great amount of their time in practicing sports. Most parents feel quite happy because sports are good for their kids' development and team work spirit, however they are quite worried about some negative effects such as practicing sports occupies too much time, distracts their attentions on school work and loses certain interests on other activities. In my opinion, everything has its good side and bad side. The important thing is to handle it properly.

Admittedly, practicing sports can help children's physical development, which makes them grow faster and stronger than before. As we know, during children's development periods, especially from 10 to 16 years old, sports are really helpful for children to develop. Sports can create a strong body that reduces the possibility of contracting some diseases easily. Definitely we believe that children benefit from sports.

Another good thing is that sports teach us to learn how to corporate with other members in a team. Most sports are team work. If we want to play them well, we must master some skills to care about what our team members are thinking and how to adapt each other to achieve a common goal. Sports are not an individual activity, it needs corporation and mutual understanding. This is not easy to master. Of course, for parents they are delightful to see their children to get this skill from sports.

另外,在学习过程中, 要特别注意那些与中式思维不同的表达方式, 比如说,“Would you mind giving me a push?” 很多人会不假思索地答“Yes, of course”, 其实正确回答应该是“Not at all”。 I’m an office worker. I work for the government. I’m happy to meet you. I like your sense of humor. I’m glad to see you again.

6. I’ll call you.

15. I heard that you’re getting married. Congratula?tions.

17. I can’t do this.

18. Let me explain why I was late.

19. Let’s h.e a beer or something.

24. Am I allowed to stay out past 10?

25. The meeting was scheduled for two hours, but it is now over yet.

26. Tom’s birthday is this week.

27. Would you care to see it/sit down for a while?

28. Can you cover for me on Friday/help me/tell me how to get there?

29. Could you do me a big f.or?

30. He is crazy about Crazy English.

31. Can you imagine how much he paid for that car?

32. Can you believe that I bought a TV for $25?

33. Did you know he was h.ing an affair/cheating on his wife?

37. I enjoy working with you very much.

38. Did you know that Stone ended up marrying his secretary?

39. Let’s get together for lunch.

40. How did you do on your test?

Students today socialise in ways quite unlike those of their parents. One of the primary differences is the use and abuse of drugs. During the ‘60s and ‘70s, students were known to smoke the odd joint and occasionally take harder substances, whereas according to recent polls, students today are using ever larger quantities of drugs on an ever more regular basis. Whilst cannabis is still the drug of choice among young people, synthetic drugs such as ecstasy and harder drugs such as cocaine and even heroine are being taken by an increasing number of students. Drugs are much more readily available to students and are much cheaper than ever before.

段首句为主题句:“Students today socialize in ways quite unlike those of their parents.”

We surveyed local residents in three university towns throughout the state to find out their opinions on the students in those towns. We questioned over three thousand people and found that since our last survey three years ago, attitudes towards students have changed considerably. “Lazy,” “scruffy” and “bad-mannered” was how more than 40% of those questioned described students, up from 22% in the last survey. This year only 25% considered students to be “polite” and “friendly” compared with 39% three years ago. Overall, 49% considered students to be a positive part of the town compared to 58% last time.

Now let’s look at an interesting example with color. If you own a blue car, you know it is blue, even it is in bright sunlight, in darkness or under a yellow street light. Your eyes tell you that it changes color in these different situations, but your brain knows better. You have learnt that cars don’t change color all time, and so your brain interprets the information your eyes give you.

Children will play with dolls equipped with personality chips, computers with inbuilt (成为固定装置的,嵌入墙内的;内在的,固有的)personalities will be regarded as workmates rather than tools, relaxation will be in front of smell television, and digital age will have arrived。

In 1960, the proportion of the 15-46 age group stood at approximately 65%, compared to 30% and 5% of other two age groups.

In 1950, world oil discovery stood at 20 million barrels a year.

In 1400, the world population stood at approximately 400 million.

In 1960, the 15-46 age groups constituted slightly under two thirds of the Japanese population. By comparison, the figures for other two age groups were 30% and 5% respectively.

In 1960, slightly under two thirds of the populations in Japan were people of 15-46 age groups. By comparison, the figures for other two age groups were 30% and 5% respectively.

In 1950, 20 million barrels oil was discovered globally.

Can You Believe It? On Twitter, False Stories Are Shared More Widely Than True Ones

SARAH MCCAMMON, HOST:

Now it's time for All Tech Considered.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

MCCAMMON: This week's report reminds us of this famous line, a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes, sometimes attributed to Mark Twain, sometimes Winston Churchill, sometimes another person altogether. Regardless of who said it, a new study of how news travels on Twitter confirms the basic truth of that quote. Here's NPR's Laura Sydell.

LAURA SYDELL, BYLINE: It may not be news that lies spread faster than the truth.

But on Twitter, it's a lot faster.

SINAN ARAL: The sheer vastness of the difference in the speed, breadth, depth that false news spread compared to the truth was surprising.

SYDELL: This is Sinan Aral, one of the authors of a study on the spread of false news on Twitter. He's professor of management at MIT. He says false stories on Twitter are 70 percent more likely to be retweeted than the true ones. And the study found it's not bots that are doing the retweeting.

ARAL: And the bot results points to human judgment and human decision-making as being a potentially more important factor than we might have thought.

SYDELL: The study tracked 126,000 news stories that spread on Twitter between and . Though the study did not ask people why they retweeted certain stories, it did find that false stories often triggered strong feelings of disgust and surprise. Leanne Baker is one of those people who unwittingly retweeted a false story.

It was a post that said the alleged Parkland shooter had trained with a right-wing militia group. He did not.

LEANNE BAKER: Twitter just takes off when events like this happen, and the news and posts are coming in so fast.

SYDELL: The story went viral. Baker says ultimately, she realized it was not true because she follows people who are experts in their field.

BAKER: Another lady I follow that specializes in extremist groups and studies them, she started saying, you know, hold on a second, this isn't adding up (laughter).

SYDELL: The problem with Twitter and social media is that it amplifies the way gossip spreads in the real world. Deb Roy is co-author of the study and a professor at MIT.

DEB ROY: How do you get a few billion people to stop for a moment and reflect before they hit the retweet or the share button, especially when they have an emotional response to what they've just seen?

SYDELL: Roy served as Twitter's chief media scientist between and 2017. He says the false news problem is hard to solve. Fact-checking organizations can be slow.

Machines are faster, but a study showed they were only right 75 percent of the time.

ROY: You will often flag stories that turn out to be perfectly fine, right? And what's the cost-benefit tradeoff of doing that?

SYDELL: Twitter helped fund the study. Its response to it was help. The company is asking for proposals on how to deal with the problem. One proposal it's evaluating is finding a better way to authenticate and verify users. But Twitter's faced criticism, especially from right-wing groups, that it's taken down accounts simply because it doesn't like the ideology of the user. In a stream conversation with users, CEO Jack Dorsey said they're going to work hard on the problem.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

JACK DORSEY: We want to be very open and very vulnerable with you all about what we're facing and what our challenges are and the way we would like to move everything forward.

SYDELL: Dorsey said changes weren't going to happen overnight. Unfortunately, that's a lot slower than the speed at which false news spreads. Laura Sydell, NPR News.

MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST:

Tomorrow the Winter Paralympic Games begin a 10-day run in South Korea featuring the world's best athletes with disabilities. U.S. snowboarder Mike Schultz is a medal contender competing in his first Paralympics. And as NPR's Tom Goldman reports, Schultz is helping others compete as well.

TOM GOLDMAN, BYLINE: Close to 700 athletes are gathered in Pyeongchang for the Paralympics. They'll take part in six sports, including alpine skiing, biathlon and snowboarding. Most of these athletes have dramatic stories to tell. Mike Schultz has one that's hard to beat.

MIKE SCHULTZ: December 13, - yeah, that kind of changed everything a little bit.

GOLDMAN: Schultz, in his understated Minnesota kind of way, recounts the day he nearly died. He was at the time a top pro snowmobile racer nicknamed Monster Mike. But on that day at a race in Michigan, Schultz got bucked off his machine.

SCHULTZ: I landed on my left leg with all my weight.

GOLDMAN: The leg hyperextended at a horrifying angle.

SCHULTZ: Totally bent the wrong way. I kicked myself in the chin with my toe.

GOLDMAN: The accident severed an artery, and he nearly bled to death. Doctors had to amputate his left leg 3 inches above the knee. Mike Schultz had raced snowmobiles and dirt bikes since he was a teenager. Despite his injury, he wasn't ready to give them up. But he knew he couldn't get back to his beloved sports with his basic and clunky prosthetic walking leg.

SCHULTZ: Yeah, here's the original drawings for the Versa Foot.

GOLDMAN: Schultz shows off the beginnings of what would end up changing his life and others, as he recounted in a appearance on “Conan.”

(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, “CONAN”)

SCHULTZ: I was in the garage fixing things, and I'm like, what better project than building your own leg? And...

(LAUGHTER)

CONAN O'BRIEN: You're certainly motivated.

SCHULTZ: I was very, very motivated.

(CHEERING, APPLAUSE)

GOLDMAN: He built a leg specifically for sport. The Versa Foot and Moto Knee gave Schultz all-important shock absorption and range of motion. Seven months after his injury, he won an X Games silver medal. In , he started his company BioDapt to make his inventions available to other athletes, like Keith Deutsch.

SCHULTZ: For the purpose of this conversation, Sergeant retired Keith Deutsch.

GOLDMAN: Deutsch lost a leg in serving in Iraq. He'd been a snowboard instructor and raced in the sport. In , in Colorado, he met Schultz, who lent him the Moto Knee to try.

KEITH DEUTSCH: It's the most familiar I've felt since I lost my leg.

GOLDMAN: Deutsch was joyous. Schultz says giving Deutsch that moment was strong stuff. Their connection was significant for another reason. It got Schultz on a snowboard for the first time.

DEUTSCH: He's not afraid of going fast. And he picked it up really quickly. The guys in the Olympics - what? - three, four, six years after he started.

GOLDMAN: Seven to be exact.

SCHULTZ: So I'm balancing on a round peg underneath the board. I've got a 12- pound medicine ball bouncing on the ground.

GOLDMAN: Schultz works out in a small gym adjacent to his office. It's all part of a large converted storage shed where Schultz also makes his prosthetic devices. The shed is next to the house in St. Cloud that he shares with his wife and young daughter. One takes it all in - his business, his success in snowboarding - and you wonder. SCHULTZ: Not a day goes by my life where I don't wish I could have my leg back. I wish I could grow my leg back today.

GOLDMAN: Schultz says all the success has been hard earned, and there have been failures along the way. And there are things people don't see, like the time he was carrying his infant daughter at night and not wearing his prosthetic leg.

SCHULTZ: I tripped. And I had to chuck her across the room so she could land on the bed. Those are the moments I - that are real, you know? I can't carry my daughter around without worrying about tripping, possibly injuring her.

GOLDMAN: Tomorrow, the public Mike Schultz will be on full display. He's been chosen to carry the flag and lead the U.S. delegation at the Paralympics opening ceremony. Tom Goldman, NPR News.

Movies: serious or entertaining?

Therefore, the merits(advantage) encompassed within serious movies far outweigh those of entertaining movies.

Adervertising is the main cause of unhealthy eating habits.

In reality, compared with other sources of negative influences, advertising only plays a small role. the eating habits are formed on the basis of many complicated factors. Therefore, it is rash to consider it a major cause of those unhealthy eating habits.

Compared with A, B...

There has been an implicit assumption that because electric cars do not burn fossil fuels, they are clearer for the environment and safer for people, but that does not take into account how the electricity they use is generated.

There has been an assumption that A, but that does not take into account B.

A 是 assumption 的具体内容, B 是考虑的内容,即 = take B into account

A=because electric cars do not burn fossil fuels, they are clearer for the environment and safer for people

2)electric cars

3)burn fossil fuels

4)safe 在这里的意思是[not likely to lead to any physical harm or danger ] 不损害健康的

B= how the electricity they use is generated.

1) they use 是后置定语,修饰 [ the electricity]

2) generate electricity

Some believe that teachers (for students from age 14-18) should focus on lecturing and asking students to take notes during lectures. Others believe that teachers should get students involved in discussion and encourage them to exchange ideas in class. Which way of teaching do you think is more effective for students’ learning?

Educators and researchers have never stopped the examination of the importance and relevance of collaborative and interactive learning that are encouraged by middle schools. When compared with boring lecturing, I, personally, believe that it is far more beneficial to students when they share their ideas and exchange opinions with each other for the following reasons.

First off, exchanging ideas with fellow classmates help students develop critical thinking, presentation skills and other kinds of soft skillsets. When discussing issues with peers, students tend to take a position on a certain issue. In this learning process, students will collect their thoughts and synthesize the concepts learned in textbook or in the lecture to support his or her points. Also, to respond to others’ comments, students have to reflect on the rationale of their own arguments and come up with persuasive reasoning. It is obvious that such activities helps students to learning more meaningfully and extensively. Furthermore, students unconsciously learn how to express themselves affirmatively and make their points clear in front of a large audience. It takes right amount of eye contacts, body language and facial expression to convey one’s idea in a convincing way and such presentation skills can be valuable asset for one’s future career.

Additionally, actively discussing issues with peers can help students to cope with different opinions. When discussing issues with peers, not only do student contribute to the class, but also they get a chance to be exposed to different ideas and perspectives. This is a very conducive experience since we are not living in a vacuum and learning how to appreciate, value and even embrace opinions that are unfamiliar to us can be very important. Furthermore, such experience can be useful in one’s future career when one also has to confront with different business solutions provided by their coworkers. A recent study conducted by Harvard Business Review shows that the one who experienced group discussions and exchanging of views in school demonstrates a higher potential to resolve possible conflicts with future coworkers and enjoys far more promising future.

In conclusion, discussion and idea exchanges should be encouraged since such activities can help students to develop critical thinking, presentation skills and other kinds of soft skillsets, also they will get students prepared on how deal with different opinions now and in future career.

People who develop different skills are more successful than people who develop one skill only.

When it comes to the qualities of successful people, people varying in education background and experience tend to give distinctive answers. Some would argue that those who are successful should be versatile and excel in lots of skills like communication skills, leadership skills and even organizational skills while others believe that one who is exceptional in one area is more likely to be successful. I personally believe that a versatile person with various skill sets can be more successful.

Admittedly, as the saying goes Jack of all trades and master of none and there are rare cases where some people who are expert in only one field stand out. However, it is more common for versatile people with multiple skills to be successful because of the following reasons.

First off, people who are talented and versatile are more competitive and competent in their career, and they enjoy a better change to be promoted in a professional setting. Actually, a lot of positions require a combination of skill sets, such as paying attention to details, knowledge in a specific field and communication skills, etc. Indeed, more skills will give someone more chance to get promoted. For instance, if a computer programmer just knows how to write program and focuses only on the technical side of the job, chances are that he would never get promoted. On the other hand, if not only does the computer programmer have programming skills but also he is a genius people-wise, he might get a better shot to be promoted as a manager in charge of a team of computer programmers. Thus, he can enjoy more opportunities in his career.

Additionally, it is much easier for a versatile person with various skill sets to build rapport with people and make friends. It is self-evident that people with all kinds of skills will be very attractive and charismatic. A person who not only has professional knowledge in one specific field but also has people skills and leadership skills will be very popular and standing out among his or her peers. For instance, my friend Alex, a bright young professional working in the financial industrial. He was awarded the most valuable banker in his company because of his professionalism and dedication to serving the customers and clients. Not only is he successful in his professional life, but also he is an amateur violinist. Actually, he plays for a city choir to represent the community and go against other cities' choir. Such skills can be very useful when building up connections with people and thus he can expand his social network easily. Furthermore, he can use these skills to entertain his clients and customers on certain occasions and have their trust on him.

In conclusion, a versatile person with various skill sets can be more competitive and outstrip others in the workplace, eventually they enjoy better chance to be promoted. Another advantage of having multiples skills is that it can be much easier and readily for them to network and expand their social connections.
