Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its global position. Though more and more companies built, management of companies cannot catch up with the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning field in China, so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management in England. The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to my childhood. My father was among the first of China’s new breed of modern entrepreneurs. As a young girl, it was inspirational hearing about his business ventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. My mother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simple calculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I, also, would someday be able to enter the realm of business.
With the time of growing up, I preferred reading books to satisfy my curiosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered. Subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and my knowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasing rapidly.
As a high school student in China, I had to concentrate on the College Entrance Examination (CEE), even so, books not related to the exams were never excluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June, , I was so nervous that I didn’t score well in the CEE exam. I enrolled in the department of Computer Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be a failure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms, I realized that I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At that moment, I lost my direction and objectives.
My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American, and some books about management by Peter F.Drucker. I began to notice something interesting: Why some companies can produce more than others? Why some company can sell more than others? Why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing the same difficulties?
With the questions in my mind, I started to read many relevant books. I was lucky to read the book “Jack: Straight from the Gut”by Jack Welch, in Which John A. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for a company. When I was a junior, I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. I should manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shop even made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the run the shop. From this, my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business has been greatly developed, definitely I was increasingly interested in what I was doing. By December, , I had finally determined to take business management as my career instead of IT. To accumulate more relevant knowledge, I strived to gain more practical work experience in some big companies.
Fortunately, as a senior, I began by conducting an internship in the Architecture Company in Zhejiang Province. Over six months, I worked as an assistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the different departments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadened my perspective of management conditions and business performance in different industries. The experience showed me that management is much more important than that of I thought in big companies. After graduation, I continued my work in this company. In May, , the company offered me an opportunity to participate in an training program held by a famous management school. Through in-depth discussions with teachers and students in the classes, they all encouraged me to pursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual ability and the brand new ideas I mentioned.
During the short period of training, I realized that pursuing a higher degree in management is a wise choice for me now. Lancaster, with its excellence in management, represents the perfect fit for my needs. In your challenging environment, I can build the required foundation of knowledge related to management to achieve my goals. I am firmly convinced that your admission will be my first step of success. With this in mind, I hereby submit my application, and await your favorable reply.

Applied Program:Organizational Behavior
I am interested in the field of study of Organizational Behavior. In the past, I have had the experience of working in settings where the people and the corporate cultures of the companies were all different. I have found that there is a great difference in the both the behaviors of people and of their organizations, depending on whether they are state-owned enterprises (SOEs), large multinational firms, or small to medium sized foreign enterprises. One simple example is that of the ability of an employee to act independently without direct instructions from his or her boss. In many Chinese organizations, acting without direct instructions is considered a form of disrespect towards the supervisor, who is generally offended by such behavior. In my experience and research, such organizations tend to have low operating efficiency with the employees losing their innate ability to take the initiative.
In contrast, foreign enterprises tend to welcome employees who have the ability to make decisions on their own, though the extent to which this is true depends on whether the supervisor is a local Chinese or an expatriate. These organizat Applied Program:Organizational Behavior
The purpose behind this personal statement is to not only gain admission to your well-established and highly respected Ph.D. program, but to impress upon you my passion for learning and my tremendous desire to succeed in both scholastic research and in teaching on the professional level. I have based my decision to pursue an academic career not on purely practical reasons, but rather on my own natural interests and aptitude. My personal philosophy is that money and social status should not be pursued as life-consuming objectives and that in actuality they are the by-products of goals originating from one's inner needs. I am a student, graduated from BaoYang middle school, Nanning, GuangXi autonomous region, in . I am still studying in high school now, because I was not enrolled by the ideal university last year. Recently, I have a dream to study abroad. Then I search online and find that it is more convenient and suitable for me to go to New Zealand for study.
First, New Zealand is a multicultural country, which has the most advanced education in the world. Second, the tuition is lower than other countries’, which I think is mo
re reasonable for me. Finally, the climate of New Zealand is similar with the climate of the South of China. Considering above reasons, I told my parents my plan on going to New Zealand for study, and my parent agreed with me.
As a girl, I like preschool education since I was young. Nowadays, Chinese parents, who want their children to get better education, pay more attention to preschool education. If I study specialized curriculums on preschool education, I will go back China and work hard on preschool education after leaving college.
My plan is as follows: first, I plan to study English in language institute for about a half year in New Zealand. Then, I will study specialized curriculums on preschool education.
I believe I have the ability of study abroad, because I have finished all high school curriculums. Besides, my parents both have job and have rich income, so they will support me to finish my study. After finishing my study, I will return to my homeland and work on preschool education, so as to realize my life value.

Personal Statement
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am with great pleasure to submit this personal statement in support of my application for continuing my university education in your esteemed university and wish you could give my application a positive and favorable assessment.
Currently, I am a junior student in International College of Hubei Normal University majoring in Accounting. Thus, I have obtained great knowledge about business for the past three years. Depending on that, I have determined to pursue a Bachelor degree at your distinguished university. There are there reasons leading to me choose business, the most important reason is that I am very interested in business. In my opinion, handling good business is the same as successful work of art. That’s an exciting thing. The second reason is that I have already learnt it for three years, so I want to broaden my knowledge about business which will benefit my future life. The third reason is that I want to become a successful business lady which is my dream all the time.
To be honesty, I am an average student but I have diligent and strong confident heart. I believe that a good attitude can change bad situation. So I am always keeping a positive attitude on my life. I never ever give up any chance of promoting my study. During my three years in Hubei Normal University,I never fail a class and always do my best for assignment. However,in my mind, social activity is as the same important as class study. In my spare time, I took part in student union and took charge of minister in arts department. Our well-organized activities attracted many students to practice themselves. Last summer, I joined the Work and Travel Programme to be a staff in an American company for three months. I made good use of that chance to improve my oral English and tasted western culture. I think I can understand and adapt to a foreign culture in a short period.
I firmly believe that anyone could acquire success by their right way and fighting. This is one of the reasons why I want to go abroad. What’s more, I want to taste and accept some western education. I hope that I can learn more differences between Chinese and British university education and widen my horizon. Furthermore,as we know, UK is a very modern country. It owns the most advanced education system and top universities in the world. And graceful school environments deeply attract me. By the way, if I can learn in your university I would cherish and appreciate this chance. In the future, I also mean to apply Master’s Degree in UK. But after that, I will go back to my country and look for a job related to business.
I really want to own a colorful campus life in your school, further develop my overall capabilities including organizational ability, teamwork spirit etc. I believe I can adapt to a foreign life and acquire best degree. With all the above mentioned, in terms of my understanding of business and my enthusiasm for it, I hope that I can be up to the standard of the admission requirements in your university. I believe that my strong interest in this subject. last, my positive attitude and comprehensive ability will facilitate my successful completion of the proposed program. Thank you for your time!

Dear xx,
I hold the British physicist Hawking in great esteem in that he was able tocomplete such a great work as History of Time when he had to rely on mechanicaldevices to sustain his life and was deprived of his ability of speech. Althoughhis body was confined to a wheelchair, his mind soared freely in the boundlessuniverse. I was shocked deep in my soul. Therefore, I am convinced that themeaning of a person‘s life, transitory as it is, dwells in learning andinnovation. I keep reminding myself that the journey of life that I wish topursue should consist of incessant progress and innovation.
Hard efforts always pay off. My industry in high school studies ended up inmy success of being admitted into ZheJiang University without being required totake entrance examination, which was itself a special honor. There, the liberalacademic atmosphere and heavy coursework effectively augmented my horizon ofknowledge and my perspective. In the first year of my undergraduate studies, asthe 150th top student out of a total of 3000 students, I was selected to studyin the “Mixed Class” which consisted of top students of the University withinter-disciplinary backgrounds. In this class, competitions were unusuallyfierce. All the basic courses including physics, general chemistry, andmathematical analysis were taught in English and all the textbooks were inEnglish. The curriculum was characterized by great diversity and the level ofdifficulty of all examinations far surpassed those administered to averagestudents, and even surpassed those in Tsinghua University and Peking University.Though the majority of students initially felt displaced and their GPAs werecorrespondingly relatively low, the scores represent more than their surfacevalue.
In my undergraduate studies, I chose to specialize in computer science andengineering. Having completed all the basic coursework in the first two years, Idevoted virtually all my energy to the study of computer graphics becausegraphics is one of the most important media of information as well as one of thefastest developing and most lively branch of computer science as a whole. It hasextremely wide prospect of application. The course that I liked most wasFundamentals of Data Structure in Computer because it made me realize that agood algorithm could substantially conserve the cost of resources and reduceboth the time complexity and the space complexity. This factor has encouragedresearchers to undertake continued exploration and improvement of algorithms. The thesis on Three-Dimensional Image Reconstruction that I am preparing isdesigned to improve conventional algorithm.
At present, I am involved in a robot project being developed by ABB Company. The problem that our group face is how to transform the robot‘s visualinformation into data that can be stored and processed by the computer. In thatpart of project that I am in charge of, my work is to implement a more effectivemethod for the texture mapping module. On one hand, some of the principles andmethods in this project can be derived from 3-D reconstruction technology. Onthe other hand, I have found that many aspects in the development of theCAD/CAGD are far from mature. I hope that I can undertake further research inthis area. I believe that I will be qualified for this research because I havereceived systematic trainings in mathematics, physics, logic, and computerprogramming. In addition, I have accumulated relatively abundant practicalexperience in actual experiment operations and developed my ability to conductindependent research.
The 3-D Reconstruction is an important subject within the general frameworkof computer graphics that has the widest application. Currently, its methodologycomprises of two major categories: dynamic reconstruction and staticreconstruction. In view of the limitations in terms of the size of the objectprocessed and the cost of processing in dynamic reconstruction, I have putforward a new algorithm based on static reconstruction, that is, the algorithmembodied in the reconstruction of a convex singly-connected 3-dimensional objectby means of 2-dimensional photos. Compared with conventional algorithm, thisalgorithm that I have designed saves more space, and is quicker in speed. Theeffect is especially salient in processing relatively large-sized real objectslike a building, rockets, space shuttles, and mountains. It is conceivable thatmy approach of reconstructing 3-D information by utilizing the 2-D geometric andtopological information of real objects will enjoy a very bright prospect ofapplication.
Nevertheless, to translate my design concepts into reality so as to work outmany problems in graphics will be impossible without more advanced levels ofknowledge. Therefore, I apply for a high-level degree program in the Universityofxx. It is my belief that the advanced educationalsystem, stimulating academic environment, and creative ideas of research willcombine to bring into full play my active thinking and solid academicfoundation, ultimately leading to a fruitful career in the field.
My interest of research mainly lies in the three sub-areas of ComputerScience & Engineering. Computer Graphics & Imaging Technology is myfirst choice. Apart from this field, I would also like to concentrate on twoother fields related to computer science. Naturally, Network becomes my secondchoice. Network security is becoming an increasingly important issue in computertechnology, but unfortunately the relevant technology has failed to reach highsophistication. There is much room for improvement and I see this as a possiblearea for me to achieve some sort of breakthrough in the future. I would alsolike to devote myself to Software Engineering. I have already established arelative solid foundation in this field as it is the strongest undergraduateprogram of CS Department of my university and I have already done a series ofprojects, both by myself and by group work. Such experience will also assist mein completing my degree programs satisfactorily.
My ultimate aim is to become professionally trained and return to China withthe knowledge and expertise that I acquire from my studies abroad. By that time,I will be an expert on computer graphics to be engaged both in research and inteaching. I can solve sophisticated technical problems on one hand and impart myaccumulated theoretical knowledge to others on the other. In this way, my lifewill be made rich and meaningful.
Yours sincerely,

It has come to my attention that our nations, and nations like ours, have long been plagued by a mysterious occurrence. An occurrence that is as perplexing as it is frustrating, and as baffling as it is widespread.
It has come to my attention that our nations, and nations like ours, have long been plagued by a mysterious occurrence. An occurrence that is as perplexing as it is frustrating, and as baffling as it is widespread, a problem that finds its origins at the very foot of our society. The problem of which I speak is none other than “The Orphan Sock Enigma,” the constant disappearance of individual socks during the laundering process. It is a problem familiar to all of us, and also one to which we have unwillingly admitted defeat.
I recently decided that this puzzle had remained unsolved for too long, and resolved to find an explanation. (In the grand tradition of science, I refused to be discouraged by the basic irrelevance of my cause.) But the truth that I uncovered is more shocking and fantastic than I could have ever imagined. My procedures, observations, and conclusions are as follows:
First, to verify that the problem exists, experimental and control loads of laundry were completely processed (put through the washer and dryer). In the xperimental load (load with socks), by the end of the process, some socks were lost. But in the control load (load without socks), no socks were lost. Thus the problem was verified.
Next the progress of a load of socks was carefully monitored. The results indicated that sock disappearance occurs during the period of time when the load is in the dryer. Following this conclusion, a literature search was done and a very significant fact was uncovered: there is no mention of socks disappearing in dryers before the invention of dryers in the 1920s. All evidence clearly pointed to the dryer. And it is there that I would find the answer to the enigma.
Then, the actual experiment was done. In four separate trials, a number of socks (ten socks, or five pairs) were put through a normal drying cycle. The types of socks tested were selected by the highly accurate Harvey-Allman Principle Hierarchy and Zero Alternative Reduction Dimension.

“All I know about leadership I learned from . . .” What items could a person use to describe leadership qualities?
Inspired by the student council advisors at my high school.
Student council was a big part of my life in high school. I have participated in it since my frst year of high school. When I frst joined, I was quiet, na?ve, and unwilling to participate in many activities. I was scared to meet new people and afraid to apply myself. This all began to change. Half way through my frst year in student council, one of the advisors can up to me and asked why I did not participate that much. I did not have an answer for her and did not know how to respond. After this, I began to think of an answer. I became frustrated and decided to change. I started to show up at events and had a great time. I realized I loved this and wanted to start leading these activities. In my sophomore, junior, and now my senior year of high school, I asserted myself and took on a strong leadership role in student council. I did not fgure out the answer to why I was so reserved until this year with the help of this question.
When I looked up leadership in the dictionary, it said that it was the capacity to lead and the act or instance of leading. These are two very broad defnitions of leadership. Many people have different notions of what this word actually means. When I was challenged to use different items to describe what leadership actually is, I thought this was going to be a hard and obnoxious task. What could I learn from comparing leadership to a stuffed animal or a rubber chicken? But when I sat down to come up with a couple of answers, I realized that leadership could be compared to almost anything a person wants.
All I know about leadership I learned from a calculator. A calculator can add everything together to come up with the best answer. It can delet e what is unnecessary and only include what is important. It can solve any type of problem. These are all important equalities a leader has to have. A leader has to be able to add all of the ideas together to make the best possible plan. Leaders have to know how to decipher the good and the bad out of an idea. They have to be versatile and know how to deal with different types of issues.
All I know about leadership I learned from a ball. A ball is able to bounce back up after it is dropped. It is round and has no creases. A ball can be thrown back and forth to different people. All of these qualities are also leadership qualities. A leader has to be ready for every situation that is thrown at him or her. He or she has to be able to bounce back from any setbacks and never dwell on the past. Leaders have to exhibit many qualities and never be closed-minded about a situation. A leader must be able to delegate when he or she cannot get the work done. They have to trust everyone they lead to be able to “catch the ball” and keep a project rolling.
This activity made me realize that being a leader is so much more than just having authority and having the ability to take control of a situation. A leader has to be trusting of all the people he or she leads and, leaders must be able to combine ideas into one encompassing idea. They cannot sit in the background and watch events happen; they have to jump in and be involved. They should not delegate all their responsibilities away.
Leadership is more than what the dictionary says it is.
I learned through all of this that I have many of these qualities.
I have the ability to solve problems, lead through adversity, and be versatile. From answering this question, I realized that I could lead effectively, even if my leadership style is different from other individuals. When I joined student council in my frst year of high school, I did not have these qualities because I was never put into a situation where I had to lead. I was too reserved to try. When I tried, I learned that I could succeed in this. I did not realize until I answered this question about leadership. I was never able to see that being a leader is not just about taking control of a group and telling everyone what to do.www.liuxue.la When I was a freshman, I thought leadership was this. I did not know that did not have to be forceful and strict. I stereotyped a leader then. Thisis where I went wrong. A leader is about being yourself and never letting anyone change you. I thought I had to change to be a good leaderOnly when I expanded my comfort zone did I realize this was not trueIt only took three years and a silly question/game to fgure this out.

The purpose of historical inquiry is not simply to present facts but to search for an interpretation of the past. The reason I want to study History is simply that it combines the excitement of exploration and discovery with the sense of reward born from successfully confronting and making sense of complex and challenging problems.
History is fascinating because society is constantly evolving and as a result, the history must evolve with it.
I seek enrolment in a program that not only maintains a superb reputation but that will also demand only the highest quality effort from each of its students. I hope that you are able to give me the privilege of continuing my studies on the level demanded by your prestigious institution. I have applied all my abilities and diligence to getting into Oxford.
My aim has always been to excel in examinations, no matter how demanding they were. I made sure I achieved straight. As in all aspects of my studies. From my strong performance in my A level history exam to my past work experience, my background and qualifications have given me the skills to succeed in your program.Although school occupies most of my time, I have learnt the rewards of contributing towards school life and have been head student for two years. I take pleasure in debating issues that are important to me, and as part of my contribution I set up a school debating society. This position has improved my leadership, organisational and communication skills and, given me the chance to combine my theoretical knowledge and my interpersonal skills to successfully debate issues closely related to history.
Outside of academics, I am a keen sportsman, competitively playing hockey and football. Last year I participated in the AA regional school athletics finals, achieving first position. My other passion is swimming, I have been a member of Warwickshire swimming club for nine years. One of my biggest achievements has been taking the County Champion title and crowned the record holder in the men’s 200m butterfly.
My swimming practices have also given me the chance to complete my life guard qualification, enabling me to gain work as a lifeguard. My swimming ability also helps with my interest in scuba diving. Last summer I volunteered to assist with teaching scuba diving at a school in Italy. This experience was extremely valuable, improving my communication skills and the appreciation of different cultures and backgrounds.
For years, I have maintained a firm devotion to history. All of my experiences, coupled with a strong academic background, will allow me to embrace studying history at Oxford University.

Dear _,
I hold the British physicist Hawking in great esteem in that he was able to complete such a great work as History of Time when he had to rely on mechanical devices to sustain his life and was deprived of his ability of speech. Although his body was confined to a wheelchair, his mind soared freely in the boundless universe. I was shocked deep in my soul. Therefore, I am convinced that the meaning of a person‘s life, transitory as it is, dwells in learning and innovation. I keep reminding myself that the journey of life that I wish to pursue should consist of incessant progress and innovation.
Hard efforts always pay off. My industry in high school studies ended up in my success of being admitted into ZheJiang University without being required to take entrance examination, which was itself a special honor. There, the liberal academic atmosphere and heavy coursework effectively augmented my horizon of knowledge and my perspective. In the first year of my undergraduate studies, as the 150th top student out of a total of 3000 students, I was selected to study in the “Mixed Class” which consisted of top students of the University with inter-disciplinary backgrounds. In this class, competitions were unusually fierce. All the basic courses including physics, general chemistry, and mathematical analysis were taught in English and all the textbooks were in English. The curriculum was characterized by great diversity and the level of difficulty of all examinations far surpassed those administered to average students, and even surpassed those in Tsinghua University and Peking University. Though the majority of students initially felt displaced and their GPAs were correspondingly relatively low, the scores represent more than their surface value.
In my undergraduate studies, I chose to specialize in computer science and engineering. Having completed all the basic coursework in the first two years, I devoted virtually all my energy to the study of computer graphics because graphics is one of the most important media of information as well as one of the fastest developing and most lively branch of computer science as a whole. It has extremely wide prospect of application. The course that I liked most was Fundamentals of Data Structure in Computer because it made me realize that a good algorithm could substantially conserve the cost of resources and reduce both the time complexity and the space complexity. This factor has encouraged researchers to undertake continued exploration and improvement of algorithms. The thesis on Three-Dimensional Image Reconstruction that I am preparing is designed to improve conventional algorithm.
At present, I am involved in a robot project being developed by ABB Company. The problem that our group face is how to transform the robot‘s visual information into data that can be stored and processed by the computer. In that part of project that I am in charge of, my work is to implement a more effective method for the texture mapping module. On one hand, some of the principles and methods in this project can be derived from 3-D reconstruction technology. On the other hand, I have found that many aspects in the development of the CAD/CAGD are far from mature. I hope that I can undertake further research in this area. I believe that I will be qualified for this research because I have received systematic trainings in mathematics, physics, logic, and computer programming. In addition, I have accumulated relatively abundant practical experience in actual experiment operations and developed my ability to conduct independent research.
The 3-D Reconstruction is an important subject within the general framework of computer graphics that has the widest application. Currently, its methodology comprises of two major categories: dynamic reconstruction and static reconstruction. In view of the limitations in terms of the size of the object processed and the cost of processing in dynamic reconstruction, I have put forward a new algorithm based on static reconstruction, that is, the algorithm embodied in the reconstruction of a convex singly-connected 3-dimensional object by means of 2-dimensional photos. Compared with conventional algorithm, this algorithm that I have designed saves more space, and is quicker in speed. The effect is especially salient in processing relatively large-sized real objects like a building, rockets, space shuttles, and mountains. It is conceivable that my approach of reconstructing 3-D information by utilizing the 2-D geometric and topological information of real objects will enjoy a very bright prospect of application.
Nevertheless, to translate my design concepts into reality so as to work out many problems in graphics will be impossible without more advanced levels of knowledge. Therefore, I apply for a high-level degree program in the University of_. It is my belief that the advanced educational system, stimulating academic environment, and creative ideas of research will combine to bring into full play my active thinking and solid academic foundation, ultimately leading to a fruitful career in the field.
My interest of research mainly lies in the three sub-areas of Computer Science & Engineering. Computer Graphics & Imaging Technology is my first choice. Apart from this field, I would also like to concentrate on two other fields related to computer science. Naturally, Network becomes my second choice. Network security is becoming an increasingly important issue in computer technology, but unfortunately the relevant technology has failed to reach high sophistication. There is much room for improvement and I see this as a possible area for me to achieve some sort of breakthrough in the future. I would also like to devote myself to Software Engineering. I have already established a relative solid foundation in this field as it is the strongest undergraduate program of CS Department of my university and I have already done a series of projects, both by myself and by group work. Such experience will also assist me in completing my degree programs satisfactorily.
My ultimate aim is to become professionally trained and return to China with the knowledge and expertise that I acquire from my studies abroad. By that time, I will be an expert on computer graphics to be engaged both in research and in teaching. I can solve sophisticated technical problems on one hand and impart my accumulated theoretical knowledge to others on the other. In this way, my life will be made rich and meaningful.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
“The Foolish Old Man Removing a Mountain” is an allegory known to virtually every Chinese. The story tells that in ancient times there was an old foolish man by the name of Yu Gong who was determined to remove the WangWu Mountain, a mountain that blocked him and his family from having access to the outside world, in an attempt to carve out a road leading to the outside world and hence create conditions for his posterity to achieve economic prosperity. The project was a Herculean task and, to make the matter worse, the old man was rather advanced in age. His neighbors all came to dissuade him from the endeavor. But the old man’s answer was that if he should die, his children and grandchildren could succeed him. The day would come when the mountain could be removed ultimately.
Inconceivable as they are, modern versions of this allegory occur in the frequently impoverished mountain areas in present-day China. The mountain folks resort to primitive manual labor (hence inevitably involving casualties) and simple tools and usually spend many years, even more than a decade, to open up routes inch by inch in order to have access to the market outside the deep mountains to sell their farm produce, so that their descendants will no longer be confined to the kind of isolated and economically unprivileged life that they are living. As a student with a Master’s degree in Road & Railway Engineering, I can never maintain a tranquil state of mind whenever I read of stories of this kind. I tell myself that I have the obligation and responsibility to help halt this dire reality. For this reason, I am determined to seek a Ph. D. program in Communication & Transportation at your esteemed university, a program that will enable me to reward my country with my knowledge of the advanced transportation engineering technology in the world. Of course, I am soberly aware that to be accepted into your highly-respected program I will inevitably be faced with fierce competitions. Nevertheless, my sound academic background, rich work experience and the ability to undertake independent academic research all testify to my qualifications as a worthy candidate for your program.
My choice for Industrial and Civil Airport Construction and Highway Airport Construction and Highway during my undergraduate program at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, _ University, seemed to have derived from my family tradition. My father has long been a construction engineer and my interest in civil engineering grew as I saw my father working on construction plans and drawings and picking up bits and pieces of civil engineering knowledge. My academic performance at _ University, which is a key university in the country, has been consistently characterized by top ranking, receiving Student of Excellence award for four consecutive years. My solid and comprehensive academic foundation and outstanding performance came to the attention of the renowned airport construction expert Prof. _, under whose direction I undertook my graduation project Design of an Airport Runway. In this project, I completed the overall design of a civil airport together with the airport’s roadnet. The roadnet design fully met the relevant national standards and the overall airport layout was rationally designed, leading to unanimously positive evaluation by the reviewing panel.
My undergraduate program was immediately followed by a postgraduate program at _ University, into which I was enrolled in my capacity as the top performer in the entrance examination. On a fiercer lever of competition, I doubled my academic efforts and managed to be among the top five in my class, winning “Class-A” scholarships. My active involvement in research also bore fruits. I published several research papers, including _, in such central natural science journals as _ and _.
Entitled Study of the Low-Noise Mechanism of the Asphalt Pavement, my Master’s thesis focused on those issues: the mechanism of noise production of tyres, the parameters affecting the tyre’s noise, the noise-absorbing mechanism of asphalt pavement and the pavement configuration parameters affecting the low-noise asphalt pavement. The thesis offered in-depth analysis of the effective voidage of the asphalt pavement and the pavement thickness as major factors in reducing the noise production. The new subject as well as the unique perspectives of my thesis won positive comments from the reviewing panel who rated my work as “significant for the subsequent research on low-noise asphalt pavement”.
My distinguished academic performance and research potential led to my employment with _ Province Expressway Co., Ltd. which made me responsible for the construction and management of the _ Expressway, a key national project. As a major technical specialist, I was in overall charge of drafting relevant tender documents of pavement, participating in the construction of the roadbed, bridge, and pavement, organizing the spot check of the raw materials for the asphalt pavement, holding meeting to discuss technical details of the asphalt pavement, launching technical trainings and field inspections, implementing the Superpave projects. The accumulation of rich and comprehensive experience in construction and management, and the problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively and efficiently, both independently and in teams, are the three most important results I have achieved. Over the past four years, I have been given the “Model Employee” honor in my work performance evaluation.
An equally important component of my employment is my independent research work. Two more papers, Construction Craft and Quality Control of SMA and Application of Superpave in _ Kaiyang Expressway were published in _ (national core journal of highway transportation). Some experts believe my papers offer detailed elaboration on highway SMA and Superpave pavement, providing important reference for the construction of other expressway projects.
While feeling proud for engaging in national-level projects, I have also gained an insider’s knowledge of China’s underdeveloped conditions of civil engineering in road and highway construction. The areas of study that I will focus in my proposed Ph.D. program are closely connected with those conditions—the methods of designing asphalt mixture, predictive evaluation of asphalt pavement performance, quality control of asphalt pavement construction, and the regeneration technology of old asphalt pavement. I expect that through your program I will be extensively exposed to the latest theoretical and technical developments in the world academia and take up fruitful research. If your highly selective program accepts applicants with sound academic performance, rich work experience and promising research potential, I can assert, without any shame of arrogance, that I am exactly the candidate you are looking for.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
The purpose of historical inquiry is not simply to present facts but to search for an interpretation of the past.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
From childhood I have been surrounded by and thrived on many things intimately connected with science. Born into an engineering family, my interest in science was cultivated from an early age, for not only were my parents avid pursuers of further knowledge, which they were always willing to share with me, my hometown, Chengdu, is a city famous for its electronics industry. Before I reached the age of 17, I had already won several prizes in various Chengdu electronics contests. I won the Chengdu Electronic Design Contest for Teenagers with my Traffic Control Simulator based on 555Ics, and a computer programme I designed won second prize in the Chengdu Science and Technology Contest for high School Students.
In 1991, in the highly competitive National Entrance Examination I placed first out of more than 20, 000 students. I chose to attend Sichuan University, the best of its kind in southwest China. During my four years there I worked hard to achieve straight A's and my GPA was consistently in the top 2% in my Department. Furthermore, as recognition of my academic achievements, I was awarded the first prize scholarship every year. In order to graduate with a more rounded education, I elected to take extra courses in both the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. In 1994 I won 2nd prize in the University's Mathematical Model Building Competition.
In taking all the major courses in the Computer Science Department, I discovered that I have a particular talent for computer science. Thus I began to explore more and more areas of this field. I participated in the 5th National Conference on Image and Graphics, organised by the Institute of the Image and Graphics (IIG), which further fuelled my interest by opening my eyes to the possibilities presented by modern computer science. The Director of the Computer Science Department of the IIG is Professor You Zhishen, also Vice Chairman of The Chinese Association of Image and Graphics. Famous for his work on image processing and computer graphics, aspiring computer science students vie for the opportunity to study under his guidance. In 1995, I earned this honor by scoring first place in the highly selective national graduate student examinations in all of the computer science examinations.
Before taking up this opportunity, I completed an internship at the Headquarters of ChangHong Electronics Corporation, one of the biggest in China, where I obtained first-hand, practical experience of the application of advanced technologies in the modern electronics industry. I then graduated with my Bachelor of Science, and began research for my Master's Degree in Computer Science. From this moment forth I have concentrated my attentions on computer science. My first project was to conduct research on the Multichannel Digital Synchronised Log, part of a larger project (DRS Radio Simulator) our Institute was organising. This project came 2nd in the National Science and Technology Progress Awards, the most prestigious awards in the industry. As a team member, I learnt the value of co-operation, as well as the importance of individual responsibility in a project-oriented group.
In _, I participated in research on “Mias-20_ Series PC Based Imagery Analysis System”, during which time I developed the multi-dimensional slide window method, while concurrently developing software on image restoration. As a result of this research, the Dean of the Department invited me to assist in programming another departmental project, a privilege he bestowed on few people.

Dear X,
A Master's student of accounting at Xiamen University, the besthigher-learning institution in China's strategically important Province ofFujian, across the Straits from Taiwan,I would like to pursue Ph.D.studies inyour distinguished program so that I can be assured a teaching career in mymotherland.
My education so far is characterized by indisputable excellence.During thefour years of my undergraduate studies,my GPA was consistently the highest inmy class of 135 students. As you can see from the transcripts of my academicrecord,I received straight A's for all the courses except for first-yearPhysical Education. My graduation was rated “Outstanding”,the highest ratingpossible. An in-depth analysis of the ethical standards of Chinese auditors, thepaper was later published in a quality professional journal as a seminal studyof a rarely studied topic in China. As the unquestionably best student in myyear,I was accepted into graduate studies by the university without thenormally mandatory entrance examinations.
In recognition of my academic performance and other strengths,I wasdecorated with many honors and accolades during my undergraduate studies.I waselected the monitor of the class and the Vice President of the university'sStudent Union, making me the most important female student leader on campus.Among the financial awards I won was the Jiageng Scholarship, the university'smost prestigious award named after its founder Chen Jiageng, one of the bestknown patriotic Chinese in the first half of this century. The Jiageng/scholarship is offered to only ten students each year, and the offer is usuallypresented to the recipients by the university's president in person in a grandceremony,as it was in 1996,when I got it.
In my undergraduate studies,I had broad academic interests, although Imajored in accounting.I regularly read academic journals, both Chinese andinternational,to keep me abreast of the latest developments in accounting andother related fields.I devoted considerable time to learning such subjects aslaw and economics. My extensive knowledge provided me solid grounding as Inarrowed down my research interest to professional ethics of accountants. In acountry that has only an inchoate legal regime governing professional practice.Enforcing high ethical standards is both difficult and critical. But studieshave been scant and haphazard so far.I am glad that I have made quite somecontribution to the country's discourse in this area.

Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its globalposition. Though more and more companies built, management of companies cannotcatch up with the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning fieldin China,so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management inEngland. The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to mychildhood. My father was among the first of China’s new breed of modernentrepreneurs. As a young girl,it was inspirational hearing about his businessventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. Mymother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simplecalculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I,also, would somedaybe able to enter the realm of business.
With the time of growing up,I preferred reading books to satisfy mycuriosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered.Subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and myknowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasingrapidly.
As a high school student in China,I had to concentrate on the CollegeEntrance Examination (CEE),even so,books not related to the exams were neverexcluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June,xx,Iwas so nervous that I didn’t score well in the CEE exam. I enrolled in thedepartment of Computer Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional ChineseMedicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be afailure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms,I realizedthat I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At thatmoment,I lost my direction and objectives.
My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter offact,I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American, and some booksabout management by Peter F.Drucker. I began to notice something interesting:Why some companies can produce more than others? Why some company can sell morethan others? Why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing thesame difficulties?
With the questions in my mind,I started to read many relevant books. I waslucky to read the book “Jack:Straight from the Gut”by Jack Welch,in Which JohnA. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for acompany. When I was a junior,I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. Ishould manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shopeven made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the runthe shop. From this,my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business hasbeen greatly developed, definitely I was increasingly interested in what I wasdoing. By December,20xx,I had finally determined to take business managementas my career instead of IT. To accumulate more relevant knowledge,I strived togain more practical work experience in some big companies.
Fortunately,as a senior,I began by conducting an internship in theArchitecture Company in Zhejiang Province. Over six months,I worked as anassistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the differentdepartments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadenedmy perspective of management conditions and business performance in differentindustries. The experience showed me that management is much more important thanthat of I thought in big companies. After graduation,I continued my work inthis company. In May,xx,the company offered me an opportunity to participatein an training program held by a famous management school. Through in-depthdiscussions with teachers and students in the classes, they all encouraged me topursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual abilityand the brand new ideas I mentioned.
During the short period of training,I realized that pursuing a higherdegree in management is a wise choice for me now. Lancaster, with its excellencein management, represents the perfect fit for my needs. In your challengingenvironment,I can build the required foundation of knowledge related tomanagement to achieve my goals. I am firmly convinced that your admission willbe my first step of success. With this in mind,I hereby submit my application, and await your favorable reply.
