Dear _,

I am applying for acceptance into your graduate program for a Doctor’s degree in statistics. I plan to begin my studies in the fall of . Nature is full of mysteries, one of which seems to be its apparent readiness to conform with mathematical principles. Such mysteries have fascinated me since my childhood, prompting me to avidly read scientific writings by Hua Lougeng, China’s most celebrated mathematician in the modern era, even while I was still in primary school. Unable to fully understand Hua’s books as I must have been, I learned that mathematics was itself wrapped with mysteries.

My intense interest, coupled with my hard work, in mathematics paid off. During my third year in senior middle school, I took part in the National Mathematics Contest for students in secondary education, and succeeded in winning the tenth spot in a lineup of some two hundred thousand selected participants. It was at that time that I made up my mind to pursue a career in mathematics. In 1985, I entered into the East China Normal University to major in mathematics. The mandatory courses ware concentrated mainly in two areas: statistics and application technologies. There were also many elective courses. In addition to courses of statistics and mathematics, I spent a lot of time and energy learning such practical skills as computer programming and the application of some new software systems in statistics. After graduation in 1990, I taught statistics for four years at another university until I decided that I had to satisfy my curiosity further and learn more. In 1994, I joined a graduate program at the Beijing Polytechnic University, where I concentrated my studies in the area of artificial intelligence.

Never a bookworm, I presided over a sampling survey of the middle schools in Shanghai, and published my findings in the ECNU journal. The topic for my graduation paper, the problem of slow server, was actually culled from an article published in pursuing more advanced studies in a technologically more advanced country such as the United States. These journals provided me the necessary quality and amount of reference materials t keep me informed of the cutting edge of the field. The new method that I used in my research and my smooth answers at my defense of the paper could all trace their origin back to the journals that I had read. On the basis of my strong defense, the supervising committee decided unanimously t grant me an unequivocal A for my graduation paper. During the period of my graduate studies, I learned more about the realization technology (not sure what you are trying to say) by using computer programming. In image processing, I used the multianalysis and category theory in statistics, and I helped to institute a recognition system for major fingerprint characteristics. I have been working as a lecturer at the Beijing Polytechnic University since I obtained my Master’s degree. Besides teaching, I have been conducting market analysis as part of several research teams.

I have basically two main reasons to wish for further studies abroad. First, the rapid development of the statistical science fascinates me, and I would like to stand firmly on the cutting edge of the field by having myself grounded in more advanced theories. Second, the market research that I am now involved in is pushing me to master newer and better methodologies, I believe that graduate studies with your department is one of the best ways for me to attain both purposes.

I am convinced that the academic foundation I have laid in both theoretical frameworks and practical skills will help me make a competent student in my proposed studies. I am looking forward to the day when I shall return to China with a Doctor’s degree to make more contribution to the development of the science of statistics in this country.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

I am applying for acceptance into your graduate program for a Doctor’s degree in statistics. I plan to begin my studies in the fall of 1998.

Dear _,

In my opinion, the Financial Engineering is a kind of creative technology to the Financial Instruments, Financial Means and system. It used to balance the benefits and venture as an interesting interdisciplinary subject. It covers many fields such as mathematics, computer science and finance, in which the mathematics and mathematical modeling are the two main aspects of the Financial Engineering. The Investment Portfolio Theory of Markowitz, the capital asset pricing model of the Sharp, Option Pricing Model of Black-Scholes and “Binomial” model of Cox can best reflect the critical position of the two subjects.

I am glad to choose mathematics and applied mathematics. Three years’ study had deepened my understanding of them, especially of mathematical modeling. (It still occurs to me when I went to attend the class of _ department given by Professor Jiang qiyuan in Tsinghua University for the first time. “1 kilogram of flour added with 1 kilogram of stuffing can make 100 dumplings, but what if the stuffing is more than 1 kilogram?” He used a very simple, vivid and interesting example which aroused my interest and led me into the mathematical modeling world.

The first time I kissed the mathematical modeling was in the summer vacation of , when I got a good opportunity to attend the mathematical modeling training organized by our school. Seasoned mathematics teachers told me what on earth the mathematical modeling is through some existing examples, in which the one about SARS impressed me most. In , SARS broke out and shrouded rapidly to the whole world, which imperiled our economic development and people’s living. Therefore, study on its spreading regularity and building the mathematical modeling for predicting and controlling its extension had become the “Archimedes Heels” for all mathematicians… So, the Logistic regression has been carved in my memory. Two weeks’ training has presented me with a kind of passion and calm thinking much more than just those classical mathematical models. As the patron saint of our human-beings, the existence of Mathematics and mathematical modeling are maintaining our subsistence and development. Then, when SARS ran riot, when we are suffering from the pain of AIDS, what can I do as a mathematics and mathematical modeling lover who loves life so much?

Pocketed with this passion and thinking, I tasted to use mathematical modeling into practice and solve the practical problems by attending the National College Mathematical Modeling Contest with the other two schoolmates on behalf of our college. It required us to evaluate the water quality of Changjiang River according to the data, through which we had to analyze the water pollution in every region and predict the trend of it in the future. Finally we had to bring out the plan against it. It was really a challenge for us towards flood of data and estimations as long as 17 pages. We tried almost a whole day only to filter those data and take the evaluations into comprehensive account. Pulling down various models we had built before, we were so defeated that we wanted to give up many times. However, we finally found the satisfactory model thanks to our encouragement to each other which armed us with full strength to go further. We managed to evaluate the water quality by Composite index model, which could not only represent the evaluation factors, but also reflect the main impacts of the contaminations to the water pollution. We predicted the future water pollution through multiple linear regressions fitting and brought out the plan against it by building linear optimization model. Finally, we got the second prize in Beijing for our thesis. Three days’ and nights’ modeling experience had cooled our passion and gave us even more calm thinking instead. The creation of the mathematical modeling, along with the successful solution to the problems through it lied on the solid mathematics foundation, strong modeling ability, accumulation of the knowledge on different fields, unique creative ideas and creativity.

The experience from this contest further aroused my interest in mathematics. I began to pay more attention to its application as well as learning the theories. In addition, I tried to catch every opportunity to take part in the practical mathematical modeling. My efforts finally rewarded when I was in the first term as a junior. I had a chance to participate in the 3-day electrician mathematical modeling practice-----classifying the sports programs for a big sports meeting. Being familiar with the Graph Theory, I immediately found the way to solve the problems by seeking the best Hamilton circuit line. Facing the nearly 8.7 billion data files with different orders much more than that on the National Mathematical Modeling Contest, I spent a long time on Algorithm without any perfect result. I wasn’t defeated towards this case, but so excited instead that I could have such a chance to challenge and improve myself. Looking up dozens of files, I finally made a perfect end of the practice by using the Genetic Algorithm into full account. It needs both a successful model and an effective arithmetic to solve these problems. , which largely shortened the operation time and improved the operation result. I learnt a lot from this practice. I came to know that to build successful mathematics modeling that can effectively solve the practical problems, we must take the operation cost

Summarizing my failures in the mathematical modeling electrician practice and proceeding from my interest in this field, I began to think of collaborating on the “Mathematical Modeling Saloon” with several students from mathematics and computer departments, taking the Computer Algorithms and mathematical modeling as the two themes of the book. Every Tuesday afternoon, we would organized those students interested in this field to study and exchange the ideas and arithmetic by imparting experience, sharing what we learnt, pondering together and discussing with each other. Both the traditional transportation & storage problems and the modern Stimulated Annealing Arithmetic (SAA), Ant Algorithm have ever been the topic of our discussion, from which I have learnt many thinking styles and methods to the problems from the students both in mathematics and computer department. So far, I am excited to see that this activity is still in the wind with more and more participants and it aroused a learning upsurge in our college.

Recommended by my teacher, I have participated in the Teaching Reform Program of Mrs. Xing yongli----the results analysis of “Improving the mathematics teaching quality on class”. Mrs. Xing, along with some other mathematics teachers experienced the class mutual activities in to 2005 with the character data files in form of paper investigations. For this style of data files, I finally used the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a creative challenge instead of the fuzzy mathematical quantitative analysis models, which firstly knocked my mind. By quantitating data and using the AHP, I succeeded in analyzing how the overall quality of the teachers and their teaching skills work in improving the mathematics teaching quality on class, from which we got the conclusion that the teaching skills and the way to put forward questions on class play the most important role in the class mutual activities. Besides, Mrs. Xing collaborated with me on the thesis named “The Application of Analytic Hierarchy Processinto the Evaluation of Class Mutual Activities”. Both of us were satisfied with this thesis and contributed it to many presses to be published.

Similar with the mathematical modeling, the soul of the Financial Engineering is also the creativity. Therefore, the perfect application of the mathematics and mathematical modeling into the Financial Engineering once more surged my enthusiasm in this field. Furthermore, the Financial Engineering plays the important part in people’s living, social stability and the national development, which is my original intention to choose this field I think.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

What motivates humans to behave in the ways we do? Are there external factors which need to be taken into consideration? Or perhaps we should take more of an internal approach? The study of the mind and behaviour attempts to answer these questions, and if it was not for this versatile science, a lot of questions would be left unanswered. Investigating studies dealing with the 'abnormal', conformity and eye witness testimony allows me to further immerse myself; it has given me a better understanding of how individuals behave and act in society as a whole. No longer do I want Psychology to be just an interest of mine, but want it to shape my career as a chartered psychologist.

To deepen my knowledge of this discipline further, I am a volunteer for experiments at UCL. The skills of analysis and evaluation acquired whilst completing my A Levels has granted me a fascinating insight into investigations outside of the syllabus. A specific experiment I took pleasure in was eye movements and language study. Learning about how words shape meaning allowed me to see a theory put into practice and improved my understanding of perceptual processes and development.

Through my other A Levels I have gained transferable skills for Psychology, and these A Levels have illustrated aspects of the subject. Studying English Literature allows me to enhance my written ability, which is beneficial to the essays I construct in Psychology. Literature provides classic examples of how societies conform as a whole or how the minority deviate from the 'norm' set. Fine examples are portrayed through dystopian novels such as 'A Clockwork Orange' by Anthony Burgess and Orwell's '1984'. Sociology compliments my study of Psychology as I am able to distinguish between different theoretical perspectives on how societies function. As analysis and evaluation are frequent in this subject, I have been able to further enhance my ability to structure points in a coherent fashion.

I take an active role in my school community and have been selected for the position of deputy head boy: I am the school's representative to the general public. Part of my job specification is to give speeches and welcome guests to our school. My organisational, managerial and interpersonal skills have enhanced which has been beneficial to my esteem; these skills are vital for such an individually-orientated discipline. Previously working as a telephonist in an office developed and improved my skills of communication and time management, as well as to multi-task more efficiently. As a result, I am more confident communicating within a team and using my initiative.

Being counselled in the past has developed an interest in aiding other individuals and helping them to fulfil their potential. Last year I had the responsibility for tutoring a student from Russia aiding him with English. It gave me a great sense of fulfilment, and being able to learn about Russian culture and master phrases has enhanced my appreciation of how different people and societies function.

Sports are another interest of mine. I regularly ice-skate, and have achieved a variety of certificates as I am registered with the skate UK programme; my confidence in this ability has been enhanced and I am now pursuing my level five certificate. At university, I wish to pursue this hobby by joining up with the particular society, or creating it, if it does not exist.

Being a thoroughly conscientious and motivated student allows me to excel in my studies and my AS level grades represent this. Constantly adhering to deadlines I am set in school gives me the attitude and mindset essential for university level study. Studying at university will deepen my independence and studying Psychology will allow me to further analyse the world from a contemporary perspective. After completion of my degree, I hope to undertake relevant experience and study in order to make my dream of becoming an occupational psychologist a reality.

Yours sincerely,

xuexila

Dear _,

I am choosing geography for one main reason and this reason has many subdividing links. I want to continue to study geography at higher education because I find it interesting. I enjoy this subject because of its content and the way in which it overlaps with so many other subjects. This therefore makes geography a very useful subject and one I am very keen to continue to understand and develop. Because geography overlaps with many other subjects and that the course encompasses many techniques and skills I find it as being a very useful tool in the future workplace. I enjoy finding out how and most importantly why. If this includes why is such business parks situated on suburban fringes to why does the global distribution of earthquakes effect human activates in that particular area. I believe geography will develop my analytical skills which is important because I want to become an intelligence officer in the armed forces. I also like travelling and my knowledge and techniques have helped me explain many things like reasons for terraced farming in areas of Maltaand infrastructure in Florida. I teacher once said to me in secondary school

‘travel, and your start to notice things around you and your be able to understand what and why are certain things there’

I am currently studying A2 geography and biology. This is also accompanied by AS physical education and an AS physics which I completed in my first year. I am enjoying my courses this year because I find the content relatively easy to digest as opposed to physics last year. I found this subject fairly challenging last year because the content comprised itself mainly of numbers, figures, theories and set equations which where some what difficult to interpret. As opposed to the courses iamdoing this year where I find the content easier to consume because I can relate it to visual situations. I enjoyed parts of the course last year because there where noticeable links between the subjects. For instants geography and biology cross over more than once during the year. I have developed new skills such as my oral and working with others on coursework As I noted above my aspirations for the future lay within the armed forces. I need to have well developed analytical skills as well as good oral skills. Part of being an intelligence officers is being able to annotate pictures and many other sources of data i.e. infra red

Studying geography will help me develop these skills to a standard well recognised in my chosen field of profession. I’m also looking to travel in the future and my knowledge of geography will help me understand the places I visit in much more detail

I have had one experience in paid employment and one work experience placement. During my work experience I worked at H+S aviation. This is a company that repairs helicopters and light aircraft. During my time here I experienced the importance of meeting deadlines as these engines where urgently needed for the customer. I also established working with a team and co operating with many departments. One important skill I learned is attention to detail/ this was very important because the slightest of inaccuracy could cause the aircraft engine to malfunction causing death to the customer. During my paid employment I worked at a café in ASDA. I learned many important lessons here like health and safety along with food hygiene. I also exercised working in a busy environment and good communication and team skills were necessary to achieve the goals. I feel that many of the skills I have learnt are relevant not just to geography but life in its self. Team skills may be put to good use in a fieldwork situation as well as meeting deadlines and attention to detail. These all figure in some aspect of the course and university life in general

I enjoy sporting activities a lot and they are important in social well being. I enjoy playing golf and especially football. I have reached semi professional for Fareham town where I scored the winning goal on my debut at this level, being only the third player to ever to do this. I have also had trials with the major south coast professional sides such as Portsmouth, Southampton and Bournemouth. I enjoy leisure activities such as fishing and camping and I go away regularly in the summer to carry out these activities

I also enjoy socialising with friends at the weekends but football usually takes precedence over socialising. There are specific areas around the city where these can be exercised together. I enjoy spending time with my family, either going out for the evening, spending the weekend camping and fishing or just play football or golf.

Dear _,

In connection with my application for acceptance into your Ph.D. program, I am enclosing the following statement concerning my life, professional activities, and tentative future plans.

I was born in Xiamen, Fujian Province in China on November 8, 1969. Later, my family moved to Beijing where I grew up. I am from a family of academics. My father is a professor of linguistics and Chief of the University Journal Agency of Beijing Language and Culture University (formerly Beijing Language Institute). My mother is a professor at the same university and teaches Chinese as a foreign language. From 1991 to 1993, my mother taught Chinese at Wittenberg University, Ohio and Indiana University at Bloomington. She encouraged me to apply for admission to advanced programs in the U.S.

I graduated from high school in 1988, and received the highest scores in my school at the National Entrance Examination for Universities. This made me an “Honor Student” at the national level. Upon acceptance to Beijing Language and Culture University, my major became English, with minors in linguistics, French and computer science. I was awarded consecutive scholarships for all four years in college. During my college years, I became more and more interested in linguistics. My senior year was largely devoted to topics in linguistics, and my required thesis work focused on the influence of cultural and educational factors upon the Chinese and English languages.

After college, Beijing Science & Technology University employed me. For the first year and a half I was assigned to a project aimed at creating improved computer program for idiomatic English-Chinese & Chinese-English translations. This project proved me with considerable experience linguistics, and further improved my understanding of the subtleties of both English and Chinese.

Since the project completion, I have been teaching intensive English courses at Beijing Science and Technology University. Since July of 1993, I have taught English listening comprehension at Beijing Language and Culture University. The latter classes are part of a program that provides adult Chinese professionals with opportunity to improve their English.

My interest in linguistics is initially based on my desire to better comprehend the English language, and, in the process, learn more about my own language. China is now opening and engaging in ever expanding cultural and financial relations with the English-speaking countries of the West. It has struck me, as it may have occurred to many of my compatriots that negotiations to bring about these new and improved relations sometimes break down because of mutual ignorance about each other’s languages. I am aware that this has been a popular problem for study, among Americans engaging in business and other fields, but I am not aware of any serious attempt to research this problem from a Chinese point of view.

Through my work in the U.S., I would hope to contribute to a better understanding of the problems inherent in the deep differences between the two languages.

I recognize that a thesis project in most graduate schools is chosen after on has studied in various programs in a department and after extensive discussion with one’s professors. Nevertheless, I would hope that investigating socio-cultural differences between English and Chinese might be considered a suitable topic. Such a study would focus on the cultural, historical, traditional and educational factors, which influence the two languages, and significantly contribute to possible misinterpretations.

My long-term plan is to continue working on comparative aspects of English and Chinese linguistics. I strongly desire to work in an academic environment combining teaching, research and writing.

I heard that your English/Linguistics Department has a reputation for academic excellence. I am applying to your program because I desire the best education possible for my professional career.

Yours sincerely,

xuexila

Dear _,

My scholarly focus has evolved in recent years from the cultural to the intercultural. To my mind, culture, that potpourri of historical, religious, and imagined markers of identity, is no longer a satisfactory disciplinary framework. My research has turned instead to the overlapping intercultural spaces where peoples have always met and exchanged ideas, views, beliefs, and practices, and, in the process, created architecture. This is the common thread that runs through several of my latest articles, which deal with diverse topics ranging from the shaping of the taste of the Turkish medieval elite, to the conscious appropriation of classical principles in early Islamic architecture, to the changing political meaning underlying the architecture of Hassan Fathy, the father of modern vernacular architecture.

In advocating a re-conceptualization of Islamic Architecture as a coherent yet fluid, multifaceted, and open-minded field of study, I formulate three questions: How can we study a culturally defined architectural tradition without reducing it to essential and timeless categories? How can we critique the dominant architectural paradigm without totally discarding the idea of paradigm itself or turning away from its instructive examples? How can we rethink the periodization of Islamic architectural history in a more representative way without cutting it off from a comparative historical framework? These broad programs of research inform my next book project: writing a critical historiography of Islamic architecture, critical not only in pointing out the biases and shortcomings of past inquires, but also in highlighting the theoretical and ideological preconceptions underlying present inquires.

My affiliation with the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture taught me to approach Islamic architecture as a scholarly field in the process of redrawing its epistemological and methodological contours in order to become a more active and integral component of world architecture. This view is guided by a personal sense of responsibility toward the discipline and by a belief that those who specialize in a field of study should not only question what they study or how but also why they are studying it. To this end, my lecture courses and seminars present architecture in ways that illuminate its interaction with culture and society and stress the role of human agency in shaping and reshaping that interplay.

I also see the Aga Khan Program as a unique vehicle to assess, adjust, and redefine our role as educators in a fast changing global setting and to foster academic links with the producers and interpreters of architecture in different parts of the Islamic world today. What I have been trying to organize is a “community of interest” that brings together the members of our small group at MIT —students and faculty— with colleagues across the department of architecture and the Institute as well as in centers of study and research in the US and abroad.

This objective has informed my policy in choosing the participants in the three extra-academic programs I supervise: the speakers at AKPIA’s “An Evening With” lecture series, the recipients of our travel grants, and the postdoctoral researchers in our visiting scholars programs. In this intellectual network, the role that I assigned to myself some years ago as interpreter of Islamic architecture and urbanism past and present has expanded in scope and methods but it certainly has not lost its strong humanistic grounding.

Applied Program:Organizational Behavior

I am interested in the field of study of Organizational Behavior. In the past, I have had the experience of working in settings where the people and the corporate cultures of the companies were all different. I have found that there is a great difference in the both the behaviors of people and of their organizations, depending on whether they are state-owned enterprises (SOEs), large multinational firms, or small to medium sized foreign enterprises. One simple example is that of the ability of an employee to act independently without direct instructions from his or her boss. In many Chinese organizations, acting without direct instructions is considered a form of disrespect towards the supervisor, who is generally offended by such behavior. In my experience and research, such organizations tend to have low operating efficiency with the employees losing their innate ability to take the initiative.

In contrast, foreign enterprises tend to welcome employees who have the ability to make decisions on their own, though the extent to which this is true depends on whether the supervisor is a local Chinese or an expatriate. These organizat Applied Program:Organizational Behavior

The purpose behind this personal statement is to not only gain admission to your well-established and highly respected Ph.D. program, but to impress upon you my passion for learning and my tremendous desire to succeed in both scholastic research and in teaching on the professional level. I have based my decision to pursue an academic career not on purely practical reasons, but rather on my own natural interests and aptitude. My personal philosophy is that money and social status should not be pursued as life-consuming objectives and that in actuality they are the by-products of goals originating from one's inner needs. I understand that my intellectual capacity is a gift, and I intend to use this gift to the very best of my substantial capabilities.

ADS

IPRS
