篇1:留学申请书英文
Dear x,
It is my conviction that the meaning of life does not dwell in the lengthof time that one can live or the material abundance that one can acquire, but inthe richness and the wonderfulness of life itself. With the increase of my age, many things in my life have changed. But one thing remains constant, that is, Iwill consistently insist on doing what I like to do and hope that my endeavorscan be valuable to the life of others. I see this as the only way whereby I canrealize the value of my life.
My undergraduate study focused on economics and I achieved remarkablescholastic performance in this field. My GPA is 3.44 (my GRE score is 20xx andTOEFL---- ). For four consecutive years of my undergraduate study, I receivedscholarships for my distinguished academic performance. Due to my equallyprominent performance in extracurricular activities I was conferred on theOutstanding Student in Campus Activities. However, honestly speaking, my realinterest lies not in economics, but in education. Ever since I was a primaryschool student, I had cherished a strong desire for a teaching careerexemplified by my teachers. In the actual teaching career that I embarked onupon my graduating from university, I have become increasingly aware that theexisting educational conditions in China are far from satisfactory. The backwardteaching methodology and the prevailing pedagogical ideology have renderedChinese education out of place with the modern international development ineducation. On the macro level, the current education theory and practice inChina lag significantly behind advanced countries in the West. For instance, though education via the internet has achieved considerable development in pasttwo years, in practical operation such education has more often than notdeteriorated into an extended form of the conventional examination-orientededucation instead of a really interactive process. In my personal experience, despite the fact that some of the problems that I have encountered in myteaching career can be solved by consulting relevant technical literature, Ihave found that the more serious flaws inherent in China's current educationalsystem cannot be worked out easily. Under such circumstances, an advancedprogram in education becomes necessary.
In this age of information, traditional education, both in its ideology andmethodology, has met unprecedented challenge like many other aspects of humanexistence. Meanwhile, the pursuit for higher levels of educational developmentand of the quality of life has largely transformed the educational valueorientation of the general public. The educational model that is centered aroundthe cognitive and intellectual instruction has been seriously questioned.Greater attention has been devoted to the cultivation of well-developedpersonality and to the ontological status of the individual in education. Suchissues as the internal studies of education science, scientific decision-makingin education, and meta-education have also been increasingly emphasized upon. There have also been innovations in educational research methodology. Thetendency has been to combine modern technology with humanistic researchcategories and with naturalistic research categories, and to organicallyintegrate qualitative descriptions with quantitative descriptions. It is alsoimportant to carry out educational experimentations in which educationalpredictions are complemented by educational feedbacks. Both the complexity ofeducation and the complexity of human individuals have made the comprehensiveapplication of diverse educational approaches necessary. Those new horizons arewhat fascinate me.
In view of the following qualifications that I have acquired, I believethat I will acquit myself satisfactorily in the prospective Ph.D. program ineducation that I am currently endeavoring to apply for. First and foremost, asis often claimed, one's interest is one's best director. I believe that I willdo well what I am really interested in doing. Secondly, though I majored ineconomics as an undergraduate, my trainings during that stage helped developeffective modes of thinking and research approaches. In addition, Iconscientiously self-studied many works related to education, including ADevelopmental History of Educational Science in the West, which enabled me toconstruct a solid groundwork for more advanced studies in this field. Next, itcan be safely asserted that education and economics are not entirely separated. For example, it is necessary to apply many statistical methods in educationalpsychology and my academic record indicates that statistics is the subject thatI am most good at. Last but not the least, my current teaching career and myteaching experience will play a positive role in facilitating my target degreeprogram.
The reason why I apply for the University of ------------ is that it is thefirst state university with a time-honored history. The School of Education inthis university is quite prominent among its counterparts in the field. I amparticularly attracted by the School's powerful pedagogical resource, vibrantintellectual atmosphere and a comprehensive curriculum. I plan to apply for adegree program in Instructional Technology or Educational Psychology, both ofwhich enjoy unparalleled academic reputation in the world. My application forInstructional Technology is motivated by my strong interest in the applicationof modern science and technology, especially the information technologyrepresented by the Internet, in the field of education and in the nature of aseries of revolutionary changes resulting thereof. Instructional Technology is anew discipline that has emerged as a result of the rapid development of moderncommunication technology since the late 20th century. It has tremendouspotential for development and commercial application. As for my motive inselecting Educational Psychology as another possible area of specialization inmy degree program, it is my long-cherished interest that primarily counts. Onthe other hand, all the accomplished educators since the 1960's have beenwell-versed in psychology. Almost every important new educational theory isderived psychological findings in one way or another so that educationalpsychology has subsequently developed into a fundamental subject for the scienceof education. The tendency in the 21st century is to emphasize on the microresearch of educational activities and against this backdrop educationalpsychology will be attached greater importance. In Instructional Technology, Iwould like to focus on the following studies: how to improve educationalefficiency by applying research results from natural sciences and engineeringtechnology; how to explore the combination and coordination of pedagogicalcontents and to improve teaching methodology by exploiting the theoreticalfindings from psychology and educational science concerning the process ofteaching and learning. In Educational Psychology, I will concentrate on appliedcognition and development, gifted and creative education, genetics and childrendevelopment, personality structure and individual differences and other relatedsubjects.
For me, to shift from economics to education and to pursue an advanceddegree in the United States is not so much a challenge as an opportunity. Atpresent, major reforms are being introduced into virtually every importantaspect of Chinese society. The field of education especially calls forcomprehensive reforms. The United States occupies an absolutely leading positionin the present-day world in education. It is my conviction that, in the UnitedStates, advanced educational theories, technologies and information willfacilitate me immensely in the achievement of remarkable academic progress, fulfilling my aspiration to become an accomplished professional in the field ofeducation. This will not only bring my patriotic fervor into reality but alsomake my life more meaningful and rewarding.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
Graphic Design is always around us, and learning how to communicate in a visual manner has inspired me to learn more about the subject. The words ‘create’ and ‘design’ have always sparked a sense of enthusiasm and excitement within me. From an early age I have always had a creative characteristic which I feel is my most dominant. For many years I have enjoyed designing logos, packaging and coming up with creative campaign concepts. Since learning that Graphic Design is something that I’m driven towards I have gained an interest and spectrum of knowledge about graphic designers such as Milton Glaser, Herb Lubalin and Paul Rand. Their works have inspired me to develop my own skills and have given me an insight as to how to establish a creative mind-set.
Working within the Communications and PR, Film and Graphic Design Departments at Imperial College whilst on work experience, I was able to explore different ways of communicating through social media, film and print design. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Graphic Design team where I was able to see how various software’s were used to develop banners for the university fair.
During my placement I learnt how fundamental research is and how it is conducted during the whole design process. After the placement I was more decisive about wanting to delve into the world of Graphic Design, hence I set about finding a work placement that solely focused on Graphic Design. My second placement was at Virgin Media, where I worked with graphic designers and UX designers and was introduced to the field of digital design. I attended meetings where briefs were being discussed and was able to follow the journey of the graphic designers to witness how they went about delivering the brief; and helping design assets for the website. The placement allowed me to comprehend what digital design consisted of and learn about the works of alternative designers such as UX designers. My enthusiasm for Graphic Design made me want to expand my knowledge, hence I took a Graphic Design course at Central Saint Martins. The course was completely different to my professional work placements. The course prohibited the use of computers and all artefacts were formulated from research trips and materials; making me realise the extent of graphic design. The manner in which I worked was refreshing from constantly collaborating with software. After the course I was able to understand that there are various methods of communicating which do not involve software. In my free time I self-teach myself Photoshop and Illustrator through tutorials. I also enjoy self-initiating briefs for myself, as well as briefs set by agencies such as D&AD, RSA and YCN which provide me with a creative challenge. For example I have ‘restyled street style’ for ASOS, which was a brief set by D&AD. I also voluntarily design logos for businesses, go to contemporary galleries, the Barbican Centre, research trips for my creative briefs and work on my briefs.
I also look forward to the annual London Design Week, where I have become educated about designers and new design processes and am able to draw inspiration upon. I have volunteered helping teach 6-9 year olds at my community art club, which I attended for 3 years. I have achieved the Bronze D of E, had a part time job for one year at a high end retail store and was part of my local netball club where I trained and competed. Completing these activities has enabled me develop a strong sense of co-operation, teamwork, good social skills and commitment which would greatly benefit me whilst studying a degree. I try to seek all possible opportunities to help me advance my skills in Graphic Design, and feel that having the opportunity to take my admiration of design to degree level would be extremely rewarding. I’m self-motivated and eager to start devoting my time and attention to Graphic Design, and am positive university will help me excel in what I like doing best.

Letters of recommendation are a very important part of the application process. As colleges become more and more sought out from the increasing number of applicants each year, the need to stand out from the competition is also increasing. Below we will provide helpful information on how to write a college recommendation as well as advice for tailoring each letter.
A high school transcript can help tell an admissions office a lot about a candidate, but a college recommendation letter provides an opportunity for them to see the whole person. While recommendation letters are never a bad idea to include in the application, even if the college does not require one, many colleges do necessitate the inclusion of one. Here is some advice to keep in mind when writing a college recommendation letter:
Know the candidate - it may sound obvious, but it is important that you know the candidate well. After all, how can you write a college recommendation letter for a someone you know little about? Recommendations written for candidates with a vague familiarity are often identifiable and can do more harm than good.
How you know the candidate - when you write a college recommendation letter, make sure to include how you know the candidate as well as the length of time you have known that person.
Provide relevant information - be sure to find out the purpose of the recommendation so as to provide relevant information about the candidate and his or her specific qualifications. If the recommendation is to supplement an application, discuss how that person is an appropriate candidate for the college he or she is applying to. Despite its purpose, however, the overall goal of a college recommendation letter is to attest to the capabilities and character of the candidate.
Obtain a rsum - another tip on how to write a collage recommendation letter is to first obtain the student's rsum with a listing of his or her GPA, activities, awards, leadership roles, community service, employment experience and special skills. The more information you have about a particular candidate, the more constructive your recommendation can be.
Personalize the letter - to help make the letter more personal, before writing a college recommendation letter, it is important to determine the person to whom the letter should be addressed. If the student is unaware of the name, the letter may begin “Dear Selection Committee.”
Proofread the letter - one of the most important tips on how to write a college recommendation letter is making sure to proofread it when finished. A letter containing grammatical errors will appear unprofessional and may leave a negative impression.
Mailing the letter - establish with the student whether the recommendation letter must be mailed in an official envelope from your institution, or if it can be included with the application. If it is to accompany the application, return the letter to the candidate in a sealed envelope.
Determine the deadline - double-check with the student as to the deadline of the college recommendation letter. Ideally, you will be given an adequate amount of time to complete a positive, detailed letter, however, the most important detail is that it is received before the application deadline.
Save the letter - when you have finished writing a recommendation, be sure to save it in order to help make writing the next college recommendation letter easier. The student will likely be applying to more than one school and may ask that you write a separate recommendation for each one. Although it is important that each letter is tailored to the application at hand, select information can be recycled for multiple letters. It is more convenient to tailor the original passage than to repetitively recollect the advice on how to write a college recommendation.
What Colleges Really Want
Colleges place a large emphasis on a student's academic ability because what is accomplished in high school is the strongest predictor of their academic success in college. What colleges really want, however, is a win-win situation. They want to admit students who will thrive at their institution, not only for the student's benefit, but for their own as well. As more and more students become college-bound, colleges and universities will become increasingly selective, placing more emphasis on the ability to know how to write a college recommendation letter.
As a teacher, counselor, employer or personal acquaintance of a college-bound teen, you may at some point receive a request for help in writing a college recommendation letter. These students are not only placing their trust in you, they are putting you in the unique position to make an impact on whether or not they are admitted to their college of choice. Following this advice on how to write a college recommendation will help to ensure a professional letter and give your candidate a greater likelihood of being accepted into his or her college of choice.

Dear _,
My goal in studying Biomedical Science is to achieve a deeper knowledge of the human body. I respect people who dedicate their lives to help others in need and using their knowledge for the greater good. Since I was born and raised in the Philippines, I understand the need for Biomedical Science especially in lower economically developed countries where health issues such as malaria and tuberculosis have affected the country. Having an awareness of this issue at a young age has led to my curiosity in Biomedical Science.
I believe independence is a key attitude for university. Studying Biology and Chemistry required me to think logically and learning mechanisms in chemistry often involved critical thinking. I try to consolidate my understanding by further research such as studying the mechanism for diazotisation. Likewise, practical work such as dissections and ester synthesis has taught me to be patient. I have learnt to work in a standardised manner whilst being structured in collecting and recording data. Similarly I have learnt to be efficient in my studies and research when I was completing my EPQ on the ethics of drug trials. Whilst researching, I have learnt to work within deadlines and manage my workload in a productive manner which I believe is a key necessity for studying science.
I was also fortunate to do work shadowing in my local hospital focusing on endoscopy, surgery and A&E. I shadowed several medical professionals and I learnt how important it is for them to work together harmoniously especially in diagnosis and prognosis. This experience has helped me understand the responsibilities that a healthcare professional must adhere to ranging from providing a good standard of care and being honest and open whilst acting with integrity.
In addition, I am currently completing my DofE Gold award which allowed me to develop my skills in decision making. This involved both teamwork and individual tasks which required me to be patient and resilient in duties such as cook work and map reading. Similarly, I travelled to Ecuador in the summer of where I undertook voluntary work. This gave my additional insight to problems that other poorer countries face. During my time there, I gained confidence in speaking and socialising with other people whilst working as a team to achieve a task such as making cement. I try my best and seize hold of every opportunity given to me. In Ecuador, I realised I have a privileged life and I have grown to become more grateful for the things we take for granted.
Whilst in secondary school, when I was a prefect, I was responsible for helping younger students. I enjoyed mentoring and assisting the lower years as it helped with my development of leadership and communication skills. I also have a passion for photography. It is a way to express feelings and provides a way to develop my creativity and relieve stress. Moreover, I am learning to play the ukulele and the demand for time and effort has made me develop a sense of persistence and commitment to learn new skills.
I hope to continue my development and aim to understand the spectrum of knowledge that Biomedical Science offers. I am a self-motivated, determined individual and I look forward to the academic and social challenges of university. I am aware of the demands and difficulties of a science based career but my aspiration to learn Biomedical Science has only been strengthened by my paramount desire to help others.
Yours sincerely,

Dead silence.
My left knee trembled uncontrollably. Why did no one speak? My hands beganto shake so I pulled them behind me-like one condemned. My eyes gauged thedistance to the door.
Then someone began to clap. More joined in. Tim looked into my eyes andsmiled. He smiled!
Joy, oh joy. My soul overflowed with rapture. I had done it! He noticed me!All the shame, all the worry, and all the castigation melted away in thatmoment. I knew how to make him love me. I simply had to speak better, singbetter, act better, and write better than anyone else. Determined, I joinedcompetitions, played in concerts, and wrote essays that were read in class. WhenTim transferred to the A.P. class, so did I. I threw myself into classdiscussions, attempting to dazzle him with my intelligence and intrepidity.Making friends with his friends, I dogged his steps.
The next summer Tim moved away. I never heard from him again. But thetransformation in me had taken place. Now I was involved for the simple pleasureof being involved. Challenging people surrounded me. Biff taught me to love.Dave taught me to laugh. Ramez taught me to break my limits. Alit gave meconfidence. Whenever I was in danger of reverting to a wallflower, one of my newfriends would drag me into another club or activity.

Applied Program: Wireless Telecommunications
On August 27, 20_, at the Central Institute of the Datang TelecomTechnology and Industry Group based in Beijing, a young woman, full of energyand self-confidence, was giving a presentation entitled “The Design of theSwitching Numerical Method of the Radio Resource Management (RRM) Strategy inTD-SCDMA, and the Testing of Its Simulated Systems,” which received raptattention and high remarks from all the experts in Computer andTelecommunications who attended the meeting. That woman was I. At present,TD-SCDMA, W-CDMA, and CDMA 20__ are considered the main technological standardsin the third generation of the world’s technological development in mobiletelecommunications. And the design of a switching computation method for the RRMStrategy is a key element and technological crux for the TD-SCDMA technology. Inretrospection, I found that it was my great enthusiasm for mobiletelecommunications, and my persistent pursuit of accuracy and perfection thathave helped me win accolades from colleagues and experts.
In China, since the TD-SCDMA uses a smart antenna, it makes a demand for afiner research on the computation method for the RRM Strategy, in areas such asPC, DCA, and HC. To me, a new starter in the company, it was a real challenge.Since the research team was new, it lacked engineering data and practicalexperience, although the equipment of the lab was quite advanced. It was onlyafter much library research, thinking, and consultation with experts did I finda RRM computation method suitable for a smart antenna. Because a smart antennahas its advantages of a more accurate VE locating and reduced searching areas, this computation method effectively lowers the complexity of the switchingprocess and its failure rate. During the time when I worked for the project, Ioften stayed up several days in a roll to perfect a lab test. But I also derivedan enormous sense of satisfaction and fulfillment after overcoming obstacles, which more than compensated the pains and difficulties that I had to gothrough.
The rapid development of mobile telecommunication technology places a highdemand on professionals working in this field. To a certain extent, it has to bea labor of love. My keen interest in mobile telecommunications emanated from theconcept of “personal communication.” During my undergraduate years at theNorthwest University of Industry, I spent much of my spare time browsing overprofessional publications and journals, to keep myself abreast of currentdevelopments. The concept of “personal communication” I encountered during thisprocess impressed me immensely. A system of “personal communication” is one thatallows the user to communicate at anytime, anyplace, to anyone, and in any way.It painted such a beautiful of picture of a future society that I became fullyconvinced that it is a subject well worth my lifelong pursuit. This was why Ichose Mobile Telecommunications as my area of specialization in the graduateprogram. As a graduate student, I completed several research projectsindependently and successfully, including, for instance, “Turbo Code and theApplication of Its Coding Concept.” In short frame conditions, the Turbo Code, with its improved application in engineering, seems to have a bright future inreal-time voice-data service (Please see the attached article). After completingmy graduate degree, I entered Datang Group, a pioneer in China’s softwaredevelopment. Here I did software design for the switch control template used atthe RNC equipment for the TD-SCDMA system, and developed a switching computationmethod for the RRM Strategy. I went through the entire process of softwaredesign for the switch control template for the RNC equipment, from topicanalysis to the project outline and then to actual program writing.
The present development of telecommunication technology indicates that thesmart antenna, software radio, and the transmission technology of subline 下行high-speed subdivided exchange data (下行高速分组交换数据传输技术) are key technologies fortoday’s mobile telecommunications. Software radio, in particular, has attractedmuch public attention. The use of DSP and software to solve the problem ofwireless interfaces of diverse standards on a public hardware platform hasbecome a major issue pursued by many professionals in our field. I too hope tomake my own contribution to the technological development in this area. In thenext few years, the traditional concept of using chips to build wirelessequipment for mobile telecommunication will be seriously challenged. In recentyears, the technologies and standards of the third generation of mobiletelecommunication have been rapidly updated. Software radio, I believe, will bethe future of our trade.
My desire to know more about computer engineering prompted me to rise abovemy present conditions. The United States, as technological superpower, havefirst-rate teaching faculty and research facilities in the world. Itsideological openness and tolerance make a sharp contrast to Chinese culture, which tends to value tradition rather than innovation. Wirelesstelecommunication may be said to be one of the newest research areas, and it isnew concepts and new vision that give life to the industry. I believe that inthe fine research environment in the United States, I will be able to make“shortcuts” in attaining my academic and career goals.
I would like to apply for admission to the Center for WirelessTelecommunications of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Asthe most prestigious research institute in Wireless Telecommunications, theCenter has a large number of famed scholars and professionals dedicated to thetheoretic research of Wireless Telecommunications. Meanwhile, it maintains closecontact with the telecommunication industry, and in this way can test the theoryin practical experimentation, which in turn promotes theoretic research. It isan ideal place for me to fully develop my research potential.
I look forward to finding a teaching position at college level in Chinaafter completing my graduate education, which will allow me to continue myresearch work in Wireless Telecommunications. I will impart my theoretic andpractical knowledge to my students, and hope that this will benefit China’swireless telecommunication industry, and society at large. I will make everyeffort to make the idea of “personal communication” a reality.

It has come to my attention that our nations, and nations like ours, havelong been plagued by a mysterious occurrence. An occurrence that is asperplexing as it is frustrating, and as baffling as it is widespread, a problemthat finds its origins at the very foot of our society. The problem of which Ispeak is none other than “The Orphan Sock Enigma,” the constant disappearance ofindividual socks during the laundering process. It is a problem familiar to allof us, and also one to which we have unwillingly admitted defeat.
I recently decided that this puzzle had remained unsolved for too long, andresolved to find an explanation. (In the grand tradition of science, I refusedto be discouraged by the basic irrelevance of my cause.) But the truth that Iuncovered is more shocking and fantastic than I could have ever imagined. Myprocedures, observations, and conclusions are as follows:
First, to verify that the problem exists, experimental and control loads oflaundry were completely processed (put through the washer and dryer). In thexperimental load (load with socks), by the end of the process, some socks werelost. But in the control load (load without socks), no socks were lost. Thus theproblem was verified.
Next the progress of a load of socks was carefully monitored. The resultsindicated that sock disappearance occurs during the period of time when the loadis in the dryer. Following this conclusion, a literature search was done and avery significant fact was uncovered: there is no mention of socks disappearingin dryers before the invention of dryers in the 1920s. All evidence clearlypointed to the dryer. And it is there that I would find the answer to theenigma.
Then, the actual experiment was done. In four separate trials, a number ofsocks (ten socks, or five pairs) were put through a normal drying cycle. Thetypes of socks tested were selected by the highly accurate Harvey-AllmanPrinciple Hierarchy and Zero Alternative Reduction Dimension.

Most of the learned youth in this country consider Politics to be “a refugefor the scoundrels” and this derogatory remark may be true if we look at thedeceptive and degenerated type of politicians indulging in a dirty thesepolitical parties are votaries of democracy, but the way they conduct themselvesinside their own parties is nothing but senseless efore a very few studentschoose to pursue Politics as a profession, but what they don't realize is that ifwe don't take a stand the system can never be ,I want to study Politics so I cancome back to my country and contribute what little I can do for my homeland andits I can inspire even a single person,it would be worth world today is growingare now not only to think of our own nation but as and when we think of it,wehave to keep the international perception in mind;consequently,I chose Politicswith International Relations as one of my courses.

In a highly competitive environment, the ability to create competitiveedges over one's adversaries and to achieve ultimate victory in fiercecompetitions depends not so much on materials resources as on the mental factorsof intelligence and concepts. Those concepts that can lead to new visions andperspectives and those approaches that can effectively solve problems will havethe greatest value. The overriding factor which ensures the eventualmaterialization of new concepts and gives rise to effective approaches ismanagement. As a branch of applied science, the science of management hascrucial value not only for developing countries like China which are makinguttermost efforts to catch up with the developed countries, but also for theleading multinational giants in the developed countries themselves. For a personlike me who has decided to pursue marketing management as my career objective,to sharpen my intellectual caliber, to understand the essence of management andto grasp important skills of management have become my greatest aspiration.
As a Master's student specializing in marketing and enterprise strategies,I am very proud to report that I have made some encouraging researchachievements. Of the two research papers that I wrote concerning strategicdevelopment of enterprises-Enterprise Strategic Alliance Based on ResourceComplementarity and The Strategic Orientation and Countermeasures for ChineseEnterprises in International Operations in the New Millennium, the former hasbeen published by Economic Tribune in Sept. 20__ and the latter has beenaccepted for publication by China Economists in Feb. 20__. These two researchpapers are the fruition of my active involvement in a research project namedStudy on Chinese Enterprises' Cooperation-Competition Models inHyper-Competitive Conditions, which is sponsored by China State Natural ScienceFoundation (Foundation Project No. 70140132)。 Another paper entitled BrandMarketing: A Competitive Mode on a Higher Level in Modern Economics has beenpublished by Contemporary Finance & Economics in November this year. Thoseresearch achievements can unmistakably indicate my tremendous potential toperform much more ambitious researches in my future degree program and I amdetermined to develop this potential to the fullest extent.
I completed my four-year systematic studies in Engineering and ManagementScience as an undergraduate at the School of Economics and Management, BeijingUniversity of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It is precisely this undergraduateeducation that has reinforced my determination to pursue marketing management asmy lifelong career. Although as an undergraduate my understanding of somecourses cannot be described as profound (some might even be said to be rathersuperficial), my learning of those courses nevertheless widened my ken ofknowledge and broadened my vision.
In order to further enrich myself, I availed myself of every opportunity ofacademic exchange both on campus and off campus. I shuttled among PekingUniversity, Central Finance and Economics University, and China RenminUniversity on my bicycle in order to attend lectures delivered by the country'sleading scholars and entrepreneurs. Those lectures constituted an importantsupplement to my in-class training because they were immediately connected withthe realities of Chinese society. I also benefited importantly from myextracurricular activities. As minister of the Department of Social Practices ofthe School's Students Union, I planned and organized the School's Festival ofthe Art of Management. I also canvassed Pepsi Company to sponsor ouruniversity's basketball league match. In launching those activities, I improvedmy organizational and managerial skills. In retrospection, my undergraduateprogram was most strengthened by my self-conscious attention to various appliedsubjects-higher mathematics, statistics and probability, linear algebra, operations research, etc. It can be said that my undergraduate education (inwhich my overall scholastic performance ranked top 4th in my class consisting of30 students) enabled me to make some basic preparations in theoretical knowledgeand in the application of mathematical tools.
From Sept. to April 20__, my employment with Hisense Group in QingDaoCity, Shandong Province (one of the largest manufacturers of electricalappliances in China) was a major opportunity to practice what I had learned. Thesecond year I joined the Group, the most fierce price warfare happened toChina's electrical appliances industry. Manufacturers reduced the prices oftheir products to unprecedented low levels in order to maximize their marketshare. As an act of market competition, the Marketing Department where I workedlaunched Traveling Expositions of Hisense Products. As one of the four keypersonnel of the department, I planned and organized a series of exhibitions inmost major cities in China. Our one-year efforts achieved remarkable marketeffects. In Shijiazhuan City, for instance, of a total of 30 brands, our salesof televisions and air conditioners accounted for 24% and 18% respectively in20__. In that year's performance evaluation, I was awarded the Group's ModelEmployee.
My understanding of marketing was enriched and modified by my 2-yearpractical work experience. To me, marketing was not merely composed of suchelements as product designing, promotion through advertising, pricing models, and distribution channels. It also encompassed the analysis of the behavior bothof your competitors and of consumers, studies in organization behavior, brandmanagement, and decision-makings. Believing that a more systematic educationwould contribute to a more successful career, I went back to my alma mater inSeptember 20__ and went on with a Master's program in Engineering and ManagementScience in order to gain knowledge on a higher professional level, to follow themost updated academic information, and to improve my managerial caliber.
Backed by my work experience, my academic focus became better-defined and Iwas more self-motivated in my studies. With a comprehensive coursework coveringadvanced mathematical planning, decision-making strategies, managementstatistics, and fuzzy mathematics, I achieved obvious improvement in theoreticalknowledge and in the application of tools. I developed broader perspectives andwas able to conduct my research from more advanced professional levels. Mythesis, entitled A Study of Enterprises' Strategic Alliances Based on anAnalysis of Resource Complementarity, presented a wholly novel explanation ofcorporate alliances from the perspective of resource integration, a perspectivewhich differed fundamentally from the conventional view held by most scholarswhich explained the necessity and justification of corporate alliance from theangle of transaction cost and value chain.
Instead of feeling contented with my high GPA for the Master's program(3.6), I have come to realize how much there is still for me to learn in thefield of management, especially in marketing. Most universities in China treatmarketing purely as a theoretical course, with neither case analysis noropportunities for students to practice the theories they have learned. In termsof curriculum, studies in marketing psychology and individual behavior havehardly been undertaken. Moreover, the lack of analytical tools has resulted ininsufficient analysis of the market feedback. Realizing that such deficienciescan scarcely be overcome within a short period of time, I believe that a moresuccessful career must be pursued through a Ph.D. program outside China, ideallyin a first-rate university in the United States.
With my undergraduate and graduate background in engineering and managementscience, I would like to focus on one of the following areas in your Ph.D.program: a. marketing management; b. behavioral approaches to marketing orconsumer behavior; and c. channels of distribution. I have also drawn up mytentative career objective. I will complete my doctoral program by undertakingextensive researches and carrying out some specific projects. After obtaining mydegree, I will seek some teaching experiences in an American university whilecontinuing with advanced researches on the latest research topics. In this way Ican keep developing my academic aptitudes. After accumulating sufficientteaching and research experience, I will seek a teaching position in aprestigious university in China where I will share with my future students andcolleagues my research findings and the knowledge I have acquired in the UnitedStates. I hope to develop myself ultimately into a leading specialist inmarketing and management who can contribute to bringing Chinese scholarship inthis field onto a more advanced level.
CMU's Ph.D. program in computer science is heavily integrated with researchactivities and is designed to nurture people with raw talent and intellect in anenvironment which permits them thorough immersion in research and coursework. The program promises to produce well-educated researchers and future leaders incomputer science. I am very excited over this wonderful vision because such aprogram offers me a basis to translate my dreams into realities. Without such aprogram, many of my dreams will remain mere fantasies.

Program: 20th Century American Literature
“The apparition of these faces in the crowds: /Petals on a wet, blackbough.” My first reaction on reading Ezra Pound's 1916 poem In a Station of theMetro was that of outrage. Is it a poem by any definition? If it is a poem, howis it to be interpreted and understood? And finally, what are the implicationsthat this poem has produced for the twentieth- century American literature?
My initial bewilderment subsided as I realized that there must a raisond'etre behind this apparently bizarre literary phenomenon. What I should do isto put this poem into the context of the American literary evolution andliterary history. At least, the poem raises an important challenge. It requiresme to understand some of the crucial changes that must be happening around theturn of the last century.
My subsequent studies indicate that this poem represents part of the largerliterary movement known as Imagism, which included such theorists andpractitioners as T. E. Hume, Hilda Doolittle, Amy Lowell, Ezra Pound, etc. Themovement was a direct reaction to the late Victorian poetry, which had becomeextremely artificial, emptily “rhetorical” and “ornamental”。 To address suchproblems, it was necessary to loosen the metrical pattern and bring it backcloser to the rhythms of ordinary speech. Consequently, the “imagist” movementhad a great deal to do with promoting experiments with free verse, advocatingamong many creeds the need “to allow absolute freedom in the choice of subject”and “to produce poetry that is hard and clear, never blurred nor indefinite.”When Archibald MacLeish said in his Ars Poetica (1926) that “A poem should notmean / But be”, he had similar concerns in his mind. Imagism, minor as it is asa literary movement, triggered important changes in literary criticism, introducing the notion of internal studies as embodied by New Criticism tosubstitute the conventional critical practices.
The foregoing incident is but one instance that happened in my study ofliterature. For a Chinese student like me, it has at least two importantimplications. First, a literary work must not be treated in isolation. Itinteracts with what is written before it and after it and this historicalperspective is one way in which we may add to our interpretation. Second, it isimportant to be acquainted with relevant literary theories when interpreting agiven literary work.
A student majoring in English (& International Trade) at the EnglishDepartment of _ University, I grew increasingly interested in literature duringthe second half of my undergraduate program. Of course, I was trained to be astudent of English language in the first place and as such I received thestandard academic training typical of a student of English major. For the firsttwo years, I primarily had intensive trainings in basic English language skillsby attending courses in advanced listening, writing, reading and oralcommunication. My distinguished academic performance is demonstrated by the fourconsecutive first-class and second-class scholarships I won from 1999 to 20__.In 20__, I was awarded the second prize in the campus-wide English compositioncontest and in 20__ the first prize in the translation contest. Anotherindicator of my scholastic achievements is the honor of Outstanding Graduate of_Province that I received by the time I completed my undergraduate program.
I started reading English novels as soon as I began my undergraduateprogram. But I primarily used it as a way to increase my vocabulary and toimprove my reading comprehension. Since the second year in my undergraduateprogram, our curriculum included five major courses related to Anglo-Americanliterature and culture: Selected Readings in English Literature, SelectedReadings in American Literature, Introduction to European Culture, The Historyof English and American Literature, Selected Readings in English & AmericanFictions. Those courses provided me with a cultural and historical frameworkwith which to understand Anglo-American literature and to know theirinterrelationships. I grew familiar with major authors and works in British andAmerican literature and gained tentative knowledge of western criticalapproaches. Books like Literary Theory—An Introduction by Terry Eagleton and20th Literary Criticism edited by David Lodge proved somewhat esoteric to me,but they allowed me to realize that there are important critical approaches verydifferent from those in Chinese literature and different from conventional onesin western literature itself.
My defining interest in British and American Literature led me to writeabout T. S. Eliot and his poetry in my thesis Dull Roots Stirred by the SpringRain—Meaning Through Imagery in T. S. Eliot's “Waste Land”(available uponrequest)。 In this thesis, I examined different groups of imagery that T. S.Eliot employed to externalize his central ideas and emotions. I also analyzedthe theoretical justifications for his virtually excessive use of imagery bytracing it to his theory of “Objective Correlative” that he proposed in Hamletand His Problems, a critical essay contained in The Sacred Wood (1920)。
In an extracurricular event, students in our department put onShakespeare's drama Romeo and Juliet and I was the performer-director. Based onmy own understanding of the play, I changed its tragic ending and made it ahappy one by allowing the hero and the heroine to be resurrected and reunited. Ibelieve that a love of such intensity should be fulfilled, otherwise it would betoo pathetic.
In the last semester of my undergraduate program, I was recruited by myuniversity to teach the course Appreciation of American Literature to studentsof non-English major. By applying my computer skills, I developed a series ofcourseware, covering different periods of American literature and illustrated bygraphics and diagrams to make an otherwise difficult course interesting and easyto understand.
Nevertheless I am fully aware that my knowledge of American literature isfar from sufficient. I need to receive more advanced education for the sake of abetter career development. Therefore I plan to apply for a Graduate program inEnglish at the University of _, concentrating on modern and contemporaryAmerican literature. Your program is nationally recognized (listed as among thetop 10 in _ according to _) and it attacks me for its quality, small size andclose mentorship. I am interested in your well-designed curriculum whoseContemporary American Literature, American Literary History, Special Topics inAmerican Literature, American Literature 1865-1914, 1914-1960. Among your 13professors, I would like to receive instructions from _, _, _. _, and _. Ibelieve I am well-prepared and genuinely motivated for your program, which willteach me the knowledge and expertise nowhere to be sought in my own country.
