It is important for children to learn the difference between right and wrong at an early age. Punishment is necessary to help them learn this distinction.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
What sort of punishment should parents and teachers be allowed to use to teach good behaviour to children?
A.同意

Currently, the topic of global homogeneity is a rather hot topic. I currently live in China and find the whole thing to be a fairly good example of cognitive dissonance. While Chinese people and their media like to use phrases such as “Chinese culture” and “X with Chinese characteristics” , I find it interesting that many cannot define what Chinese culture actually is, or resort to the past in an attempt to define the present. While China definitely had its own culture hundreds of years ago, the case is becoming harder to make today, when you see Chinese people wearing Jeans and T- shirts, shopping for international fashion brands, driving BMWs, using iPhones and eating at KFC. Ultimately, I suspect the question is largely irrelevant. While Chinese people obviously had their own culture and products, it wasn’ t exactly alien to the West, or other parts of the East. They still lived in houses, used language and ate food – the differences were, to all intents and purposes, rather small. As such, I feel that cultural nuances can be used to justify a sense of “us and them” and foster negative attitudes about other peoples in an attempt to boost one’ s own self- esteem by saying “I belong to this cultural group, therefore I must be a good person” . While the loss of various nuances of cultures and products and the world becoming a less diverse place is, in some ways, a sad thing, I feel that in the end it’ s better than the sort of Nationalism of chauvinistic sentiments that led to the Nazis, the imperial Japanese or the idea of manifest destiny in the American West. (290 words)
In this essay, I will argue that the lack of diversity is a negative thing. Nowadays, we can see that many people have become obsessed with the idea of conforming to cultural stereotypes that are beyond their own frames of reference. I feel that this is a negative development because it leads to people setting aside their local products and cultures – the ones that made and defined their societies in the first place. If we allow this to continue, the world of the future will be a very dull place. Currently, it is unarguable that American culture and products are predominant across the globe, with rap music popular in every country, as well as the eating habits of Americans becoming a staple trend in virtually every society. If this continues, we will lose any sense of diversity among peoples – languages will die out and customs will be forgotten. While some people may argue that this doesn’ t really matter, or approach it from a Darwinian standpoint (e. g. if your culture and products are so good, why does everyone want to be like Americans), I would argue that people are simply conforming to a narrow viewpoint perpetuated by media companies in an effort to boost (mostly American) revenue streams.
As such, it is clear that we need to re- examine why we buy the products we do and what the alternatives are if we are ever to break free of the stranglehold American culture has over the rest of the world. To do this, however, we need to understand the past as well as the reasons why people choose to conform to Western conceptions of success or beauty. (277 words)

TEST 3
WRITING TASK 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
The flow chart illustrates the working mechanism of hydroelectric power station. The whole process can be divided into two stages according to its different working modes in the daytime and at night.
In the first stage, the river flows into and accumulates in the high-level reservoir. In the daytime, the dam is open. By the effect of potential energy, water in the high-level reservoir will flow down into the power station, where reversible turbines are facilitated. The lash of water will operate reversible turbines, driving the connected generator to produce electricity. Under the transportation of power lines, the electricity will be delivered to National grid.
In the second stage, reversible turbines start to rotate backward at night, under whose mechanical energy, the water will be pumped up back to the high-level reservoir again. The intake of dam at that time will not be closed until all water is transported back to the reservoir.
After the re-accumulation of river water is completed, the dam will be closed until the whole electricity production starts the next day.
WRITING TASK 2
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
1)To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? 2)Is it positive or negative? 3)Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
As a traditional type of art, music has long been regarded as a perfect symbol of people’s aesthetic pursuit. Since the creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music varies according to culture and social context, some people claim that people from different age groups and cultural backgrounds cannot appreciate the same kind of music, which I can hardly agree with.
The fact is that we indeed can frequently find people belonging to certain groups enjoy diversified types of music. For example, the young may be more inclined to appreciate popular music while senior citizens may favor classical or folk music more. Growing up in and experiencing features of different ages, people’s personality, interests as well as focuses may be quite distinctive from each other. Consequently, people’s appetite for music can hardly reach a consensus. It is understandable, hence, that a certain group of people support this view.
The magic and charm of music, however, should never be looked down upon. It can be widely observed that no matter in which age group, which kind of cultural context and which period of time, there are certain pieces of music compositions and works that can arouse the enthusiasm and affection of the general. There are hundreds of thousands of music masterpieces that have been appreciated by people throughout the history, such as those brilliant symphonies written by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. The existence of those eternal music works clearly proves that music has the power to trigger empathy among the public.
What is more, driven by the interests into same types of music, people would naturally gather together to constitute certain groups or even organizations to enjoy their favorable music works together. Human beings are inborn group species, and they would unite together for the shared interests or targets which undoubtedly involve the music. That’s the reason why there are lots of fan clubs and musical organizations that are constituted by people from various cultures and age groups, in which each member can communicate with others without barriers.
In conclusion, although people possess different interests, music can bring them together.
