Christmas, annual Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. Most members of the Roman Catholic Church and followers of Protestantism celebrate Christmas on December 25, and many celebrate on the evening of December 24 as well. Members of the Eastern Orthodox Church usually delay their most important seasonal ceremonies until January 6, when they celebrate Epiphany, a commemoration of the baptism of Jesus. Epiphany also traditionally commemorates the arrival of the Three Wise Men of the East in Bethlehem (near Jerusalem, Israel), where they adored the infant Jesus and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The official Christmas season, popularly known as either Christmastide or the Twelve Days of Christmas, extends from the anniversary of Christ’s birth on December 25 to the feast of Epiphany on January 6. Christmas is based on the story of Jesus’ birth as described in the Gospel according to Matthew (see Matthew 1:18-2:12) and the Gospel according to Luke (see Luke 1:26-56). Roman Catholics first celebrated Christmas, then known as the Feast of the Nativity, as early as 336 ad. The word Christmas entered the English language sometime around 1050 as the Old English phrase Christes maesse, meaning “festival of Christ.” Scholars believe the frequently used shortened form of Christmas—Xmas—may have come into use in the 13th century. The X stands for the Greek letter chi, an abbreviation of Khristos (Christ), and also represents the cross on which Jesus was crucified.

Christmas in United States of America
Santa Claus was born in US in the 1860's he was named this as he had a white beard and a belly, so he was named Santa Claus as this was the Dutch word for St Nicholas, Sintaklaas. Although the Dutch had bought him with them in the 17th century, he did not become an important person at Christmas until the Novelist Washington Irving put him in a novel that he wrote in 1809. This first Santa Claus was still known as St. Nicholas, he did smoke a pipe, and fly around in a wagon without any reindeer, but he did not have his red suit or live at the North Pole, he did however bring presents to children every year.
In 1863 He was given the name Santa Claus and bore the red suit, pipe, and his reindeer and sleigh.
christmas is an annual holiday that celebrates the birth of jesus. the date of the celebration is traditional, and is not considered to be his actual date of birth. christmas festivities often combine the commemoration of jesus; birth with various secular customs, many of which have been influenced by earlier winter festivals.
in most places around the world, christmas day is celebrated on december 25. christmas eve is the preceding day, december 24. in the united kingdom and many countries of the commonwealth, boxing day is the following day, december 26. in catholic countries, saint stephen;s day or the feast of st. stephen is december 26. the armenian apostolic church observes christmas on january 6. eastern orthodox churches that still use the julian calendar celebrate christmas on the julian version of 25 december, which is january 7 on the more widely used gregorian calendar, because the two calendars are now 13 days apart. (armenians who use the julian calendar celebrate christmas on the julian version of jan. 6, which is jan. 19 on the gregorian calendar.)
the word “christmas” is a contraction of two words “christ;s mass” and is derived from the middle english christemasse and old english cristes maelig;sse, a phrase first recorded in 1038. in early greek versions of the new testament, the letter Chi; (chi), is the first letter of christ (Chi;rho;iota;sigma;tau;#972;sigmaf;). since the mid-16th century Chi;, or the similar roman letter x, was used as an abbreviation for christ. thus, xmas is an abbreviation for christmas.
after the conversion of anglo-saxons in england from their indigenous anglo-saxon polytheism (a form of germanic paganism) in the very early 7th century, christmas was called geol, which was the name of the native germanic pre-christian solstice festival that fell on that date. from geol, the current english word yule is derived. many customs associated with modern christmas were derived from germanic paganism.
the prominence of christmas day increased gradually after charlemagne was crowned on christmas day in 800. around the 12th century, the remnants of the former saturnalian traditions of the romans were transferred to the twelve days of christmas (26 december - 6 january). christmas during the middle ages was a public festival, incorporating ivy, holly, and other evergreens, as well as gift-giving.
modern traditions have come to include the display of nativity scenes, holly and christmas trees, the exchange of gifts and cards, and the arrival of father christmas or santa claus on christmas eve or christmas morning. popular christmas themes include the promotion of goodwill and peace.
【When Christmas is Celebrated】
Many people think Christmas is on December the 25th and that;s all there is to Christmas. However, for many people around the world, in different countries and in different Christian traditions, Christmas lasts for a lot longer than that - and it;s even celebrated at different times!
When Christmas is Celebrated
Although December 25th is the date when most people celebrate Christmas, there are some other dates as well!
Some churches (mainly Orthodox churches) use a different calendars for their religious celebrations. Orthodox Churches in Russia, Serbia, Jerusalem, Ukraine, Ethiopia and other countries use the old ;Julian; calendar and people in those churches celebrate Christmas on January 7th.
Most people in the Greek Orthodox Church celebrate Christmas on December 25th. But some still use the Julian calendar and so celebrate Christmas on 7th January! Some Greek Catholics also celebrate on January 7th.
In Armenia, the Apostolic Church celebrates Christmas on January 6th. It also celebrates ;Epiphany; on this day.
Advent - The Time Before Christmas
Before Christmas, many Christians use the time of Advent to prepare themselves and get ready to celebrate the joy of Christmas, when Christians celebrate of the birth of Jesus, who they believe is the Son of God.
Advent is normally a period of four Sundays and weeks before Christmas. In many Orthodox and Eastern Catholics Churches Advent lasts for 40 days, starting on November 15th.
In Orthodox Churches which celebrate Christmas on 7th January, Advent start on 28th November!
During Advent many people fast (don;t eat certain foods). The types of food people give up depends on their church tradition and where in the world they live.
After Christmas - The 12 Days of Christmas and Epiphany
After Advent, traditionally, Christmas celebrations (and often a feast!) started on Christmas Day and lasted for 12 Days - so they were known as The 12 Days of Christmas! The celebrations finished on the evening of 5th January, which is better known as Twelfth Night.
Throughout history, the 12 Days of Christmas were a time of feasting and fun.
Following Twelfth Night, on 6th January, is Epiphany, when people remember the Wise Men (also sometimes called the Three Kings) who visited Jesus and/or the Baptism of Jesus.
Epiphany/Twelfth Night is also the time when it was traditional to take your Christmas decorations down - although some people leave them up until Candlemas.
Candlemas - The End of Christmas
You might think that Christmas ends when you take the Christmas Decorations down - but it does not! After both Christmas and the season of Epiphany, the end of the Christmas celebrations come on February 2nd, 40 days after Christmas, with Candlemas.
Candlemas, also known as the ;Presentation of Jesus at the Temple; or the ;Feast of the Purification of the Virgin (or Mary); is the when some Christians remember the time when Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem to give thanks to God for giving them a son.
It;s a very important day in some Orthodox and Catholic churches.
The name Candlemas comes from ;Candle Mass; because in many Candlemas services, the candles are blessed to be used in churches during the coming year or are given out to people for them to use in their homes and private prayers.
In many Catholic churches, it;s a time when people remember and renew promises they;ve made to the church and celebrate some of the prophesies which were given about Jesus.
In many Eastern/Orthodox churches, an all night vigil is held on the night before the candle blessing ceremony. In the morning, the candles are blessed and are given out to people.
In Britain, Christmas Day is normally spent at home, with the family, and it is regarded as a celebration of the family and its continuity. Preparations start well in advance, with the sending of Christmas cards and installation of a decorated Christmas tree in a prominent place in the home. Although it is now a firmly established tradition, the Christmas tree was first popularised by Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, who introduced the custom from his native Germany in 1840.
Some houses are decorated with evergreens (plants which do not lose their leaves in winter); a wreath of holly on the front door and garlands of holly, ivy and fir indoors. Bunches of mistletoe are often hung above doorways - any couple passing under neath must exchange kisses! Traditional food is prepared: sweet mince pies, a rich Christmas cake and the Christmas pudding. Everyone has their own favourite recipe, but they’re all packed full of spices, nuts, dried fruit and brandy.
Presents are bought and wrapped, and traditionally placed under the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. Christmas is both a secular and a religious holiday, and many families like to attend a midnight service at church on Christmas Eve, or celebrate Christmas in church on Christmas morning.
The excitement begins for children on Christmas Eve, when they hang up their stockings(an old sock or, more ambitiously, pillow cases) around the fireplace or at the foot of the bed for Father Christmas to fill with presents. The English Father Christmas or Santa Claus is first recorded in his traditional red and white outfit in a woodcut of 1653, but the story of Santa arriving in his reindeer-drawn sleigh and descending down the chimney to fill children’s stockings with presents derives from the USA.
Practically everyone sits down to a Christmas dinner in the early afternoon of Christmas Day, traditionally roast turkey, but some families prefer goose or roast beef. The turkey is followed by the Christmas pudding, brought to the table flaming hot. Brandy is poured over the pudding, then lit. After dinner, everyone relaxes by going for a walk, playing games, enjoying their presents or watching television.
history tells us that the origin of santa claus begins in the 4th century with saint nicholas, bishop of myra (an area in present day turkey). one of the legends tells about that he acquired a fortune when his parents died while he was still in his teens. by nature st.nicholas was a generous and honest man, particularly devoted to children. he also cared deeply for the poor. he brought various gifts, money and other useful items to the houses of the poor. he did this at night, and in secrecy, so that no one knew, as he wanted no glory, he just wanted to help people. he became widely known for his generosity.
there is one famous legend about saint nicholas. the story tells of nicholas hearing one day of three beautiful sisters who lived in a miserable hut on the edge of myra. the three sisters were very poor. they could barely earn enough to keep themselves and their old mother from starving to death. when nicholas heard of their plight, he was very concerned. he decided to do something to help them.
one night, when everyone was asleep, nicholas crept through the streets to the edge of town. quietly, he tiptoed up to the hut where the three sisters lived. he climbed onto the roof and dropped three bags of gold through the hole in the roof where the smoke from the fire came out. now it so happened that the three sisters has washed their stockings before they went to bed. the stockings has been hung by the fire to dry. when nicholas dropped the gold through the smoke hole, each bag of gold fell into a stocking.
the three sisters were overjoyed to find three bags of gold in their stockings when they woke up the next morning. soon, the story began to spread. other people began to hang up stockings in the hope of finding bags of gold when they woke up in the morning. from this legend sprang the custom of hanging stockings up by the chimney on christmas eve. over the years, saint nicholas became associated with christmas.
after his death around 350 a.d. he was buried in myra, but in 1087 italian sailors purportedly stole his remains and removed them to bari, italy, greatly increasing st. nicholas#39; popularity throughout europe. his kindness and reputation for generosity and love for children gave rise to claims that he could perform miracles and devotion to him increased. st. nicholas became the patron saint of russia, where he was famous for his red cape, flowing white beard, and bishop#39;s mitre. in greece, he is the patron saint of sailors; in france he was the patron of lawyers, and in belgium the patron of children and travelers. the dutch kept the legend of st. nicholas alive. in 16th century holland, dutch children would place their wooden shoes by the hearth in hopes that they would be filled with a treat and goodies.

The word Christmas comes from the words Cristes maesse, or “Christs Mass”. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus for members of the Christian religion. Most historians peg the first celebration of Christmas to Rome in 336 AD.
Christmas is both a holiday and a Holy Day. In America it is the biggest event of the year (especially for kids), and for members of the Christian religions it is an important day on the religious calendar.
The federal government, all state governments, all schools/colleges/universities and the vast majority of businesses in America give employees one or two days off at Christmas, making it an important holiday (other federal holidays are: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Washingtons Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving).
In the Roman Catholic calendar, Christmas is one of 6 holy feast days celebrated in America, the others being: Circumcision (New Years Day), Ascension, Assumption (Marys Assumption into heaven, August 15), All Saints (November 2), and the Immaculate Conception.
The name Christmas is short for Christs Mass. A Mass is a kind of Church service. Christmas is a religious festival. It is the day we celebrate as the birthday of Jesus.
There are special Christmas services in Christian churches all over the world. But many of the festivities of Christmas do not have anything to do with religion. Exchanging gifts and sending Christmas cards are the modern ways of celebrating the Christmas in the world.
The birth of Jesus had a story: In Nazareth, a city of Galilee. The virgins name was Mary was betrothed to Joseph. Before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband was minded to put her away secretly. While he thought about these things, Gabriel, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him did not be afraid to take Mary as wife. And Mary will bring forth a Son, and he shall call his name, Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
Before Jesus births, Joseph and Mary came to Quintus was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up out of Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and of the lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
And that, Christmas is the feast of the nativity of Jesus, is on 25th, December every year. But nobody know the actual birthday of Jesus. And the Christmas has become popular when Christmas cards appeared in 1846 and the concept of a jolly Santa Claus was first made popular in nineteenth Century.
It is said that there was a farmer in a wintry Christmas night received a hungry child, let him eat a sumptuous Christmas dinner, the child goodbye to fold a root fir branches stuck in the ground and blessing, said: “every year this day, gift full branch, leave this beautiful cedar village, repay your kindness.” After the child had gone, the farmer found that the branch had become a small tree, and he realized that he had received the angel of god. The story became the source of the Christmas tree.
In the west, whether Christian or not, a Christmas tree should be prepared for Christmas to increase the festive atmosphere. The Christmas tree is usually made of evergreen trees such as cedar trees, symbolizing life. The trees are decorated with lamps, flowers, toys, stars and all kinds of Christmas presents. On Christmas Eve, people sing and dance around the Christmas tree and have fun.
How many festivals are there in the world? Im afraid no one can tell. But which holiday in the world has the most influence and spread the most? The answer is clear: its Christmas.
There are more than 140 countries and regions on earth to celebrate Christmas. The festival, which lasts from December 24 to January 6, is the most widely circulated and the most heavily attended festival in the world. It can be said that Christmas is a universal festival that transcends national boundaries.
Christmas commemorates the birth of the Christian founder Jesus Christ. According to the bible, unmarried female maria gave birth to Jesus on a winter night because of her “conception of the holy spirit”. Christians took Jesus to be born this year as the beginning of the world, is “the first” international now is this dating method, called “AD”, that is what we call “Gregorian calendar”. The birthday of Jesus was not recorded in history until the Roman Catholic church in A.D. 354 stipulated that December 25 was “Christmas”. Why choose this day? It turns out that December 25th of every year is the festival of saturnalia, which falls on the heels of the lunar winter solstice, the shortest day of the day, the longest night and the least sunshine. From the festival of saturnalia, the days get longer, the nights get shorter, the days get longer and the sun gives people light and warmth. In order to thank the sun for the blessing of the sun, a variety of celebrations are held at the festival of saturnalia, and they are worshiped by the sun. The birth of Jesus is the same day as saturnalia, to show that the birth of Jesus is the rebirth of the sun, and Jesus is like the sun. Thus, Jesus birthday was made in this way.
Although Christmas is on December 25th, the Christmas season begins on December 24th. This is like the Chinese Spring Festival not from the beginning of the first month, but from the beginning of the thirty years.
Christmas activities are not exactly the same, but they are similar. From this point of view, it is clear that Christmas is indeed a very unusual world festival.
