Many people think it is very important to protect our environment but they make no effect to do it themselves. Why do you think it is the case? What actions can be done to encourage individuals to protect the environment?
如a task of gargantuan proportion 艰巨的任务,environmental deterioration环境恶化。
The fast increase in the number of cars havebrought along many related problems which are wellworth our greatest attention.
First of all, urban traffic is getting from bad to worse. I’d like to cite my own experience asan example. Five years ago, it took me about 30 minutes to drive from home to office. Oneyear later, I needed to spend about 40 minutes on the way. Then two years later, I had tostart out from home at least 1 hour earlier in order to get to my office on good time for work. And then, since last year, it has just been too normal for me to spend about one and half hoursto make it. The traffic just moves like a worm!
Second, with the ever growing number of cars, air quality in urban areas is deterioratingwith each passing day. We used to see clear blue sky and breathe fresh air, but now this wouldbe a real luxury. Car exhaust has seriously polluted the air and people’s health is greatlyendangered. It seems certain that we human beings have already made a fatal mistake thatcould only be remedied by bringing down the number of cars hugely.
Sure, we can not deny the fact that cars have brought us speed, comfort and greatermobility. However, these have already been history. We are suffering much more from carsthan benefiting from them. Our health conditions are going down rapidly both due to thepolluted air that we have to breathe every second and our lack of exercise as a result of theever increasing amount of time we have to spend behind the wheel!
What can we do? From the foregoing discussion, I’m sure we have already found asolution: to discourage people to use cars! I know very well that science and technology arealso developing very fast and there might be better solutions coming up in the future, but, before that, let’s first salvage ourselves in such a passive way!
Many people say that we have developed into a“throw-away society”, because we are filling up ourenvironment with so many plastic bags andrubbish that we cannot fully dispose of. To wantextent do you agree with this opinion and whatmeasures can you recommend to reduce thisproblem?
In present-day society, plastic containers andutensils are extensively used in big cities and the countryside alike. They are so ubiquitous Iwould hazard the guess that each one of us has seen, at one time or another, the unsightlyscene of plastic bags swirling in the wind. These plastic shopping bags, chopsticks, to-goboxes and mineral-water bottles, to name but a few, when not properly disposed of, create acolossal amount of non-biodegradable refuse. Therefore, some people argue that we haveembarked upon a “throw-away” era when plastic trash is largely dumped indiscriminately andirresponsibly (this practice is often labeled “white pollution” on account of the color of plasticwastes). Personally , I wholeheartedly support their view.
There are numerous reasons for this worrisome phenomenon coming into being. To beginwith , at present the bulk of people who shop and/or eat out regularly are still poorly-informed, uninformed or misinformed about the pernicious influence that non-biodegradablepollutants exert on the ecosystem, which is the main culprit in the global-scale mishandling ofthe plastic wastes. The chief component of such trash is polythene, which cannot decomposeon landfill sites over the process of the next hundreds of years if no major scientificbreakthrough comes along in polythene treatment. Thus, such trash must be dealt withcollectively rather than be scattered like tumbleweeds. Secondly, the proliferation of plasticshopping bags and eating ware is largely fuelled by the surging, headlong consumerism.Plastic containers and utensils are lighter in weight, cheaper(often free of charge) in price andwater-resistant in performance. These superior properties make them preferable to theirpaper and cloth counterparts in customers’ eyes; and as consumer satisfaction reignssupreme in contemporary society, compared with superb portability, affordability and utility, how to dispose of them is the last thing the customers are concerned about. Additionally, plastic bags, wrap and containers are also commercially feasible since they are cheaper tomanufacture, ship and store. These mercenary considerations also have prompted the goodold cloth or paper bags to be supplanted by plastic bags but over the phasing-out process, few stores and restaurants advocate or encourage the use of environmentally—benigndisposal of plastic trash, hence the whole slew of non-biodegradable garbage. Andenvironmental hazards ensue.
Given the scale and severity of “white pollution”, we must take immediate steps toaddress this scourge. In the first place, we must do our utmost to enhance people’sawareness of how persistent and devastating non-biodegradable trash can be to ourenvironment and our posterity’s. Secondly, retail stores and dining establishments shouldspare no effort in encouraging their customers to reuse plastic packing items. Furthermore, indiscriminate and irresponsible dumping of household garbage or personal junk should beoutlawed by the legislature and heavy fines or even jail terms must be imposed on thosecompulsive litterbugs who fail to get their act together. Then , on the part of the biochemicalresearchers and technologists , scientific research must be launched here and now in pursuit ofeffectual ways to convert non-biodegradable refuse to biodegradable refuse. Last but notleast, the government must not shirk its obligations in mobilizing scientific resources andrallying popular support in the crusade against “white pollution”. Neither should it pay just lipservice to relevant research and campaigns if no enough funding can be obtained otherwise.Additionally, I am convinced a customer tax levied by the government on the use of plasticbags will also help to curb this massive “white pollution”.
The havoc non-biodegradable refuse can wreak on the ecosystem is beyond ourimagination. It can eventually devastate soil, water and the aquatic and terrestrial biota. Wemust start combating this environmental catastrophe before the ecosystem irretrievablybreaks down under the reign of the minute plastic debris.

Many people are optimistic of the21st century and see it as an opportunity to make positive changes to the world. To what extent do you share their optimism? What changes would you like to see in the new century? (050521,090723)
It is generally believed that education is of vital importance to the development of individuals and the well-being of societies. What should education consist of to fulfil both these functions? (050312)
Some people think that the government should decide which subjects students should study at the university, while others think that students should be allowed to apply for the subject they prefer. Discuss the two views and give your opinion. (060916)
Many people use distance-learning programmes (study material post, TV, Internet, etc.) to study at home, but some people think that it cannot bring the benefit as much as attending college or university. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? (041113, 081023,100515)
提示:远程教育最大的好处,就在于三个any:anybody, anywhere, any time.
Some people believe that university students should pay all the cost of studies because university education only benefit the students themselves not the society as a whole. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (100731)
Some school leavers travel or work for a period of time instead of going directly to university. What are the advantages and disadvantages? (030308, 050514,090926)
Some people say that children should obey the rules of their parents and teachers, while other people think children will not be well-prepared for their adult life if they are given too much control. Discuss in both sides and give your opinion. (041120, 100520)

Many people believe that we have developed into a “throw-away society” which is filling with plastic bags and rubbish. What do you think?
范文:
Wind blows up bags higher and higher in the sky. It is a scary thought that some day the earth will turn into a huge garbage land. Wastes, if not treated properly, will make our life a living nightmare.
The environmental issue is getting worse almost every day in cities with very large population. As is often the case, city development outpaces environmental protection. People consume great amount of natural resouces and produce wastes. To effectively address such problems, cities need to spend big money. In addition, they need to call to the attention of people to become more environmentally responsible.
Many people are becoming less responsible and easily influenced by bad behaviors. “Why should I care while others don’t care?” Such idea makes some people only concern with places where they live and work. Furthermore, people sometimes even purposely litter for revenge to other people.
Although media promotes environmental awareness, good people are often snubbed as posers who try to set up a superior image in real life. Consequently, they are intimated of receiving negative comments for doing the right thing. Wrong as it is, such phenomenon is widespread especially among youngsters and people with low income and little education.
However, our society is waging a campaign against environmental pollution. People learn the harms of undegradable lunch boxes and other polluting wastes. Laws in many countries prohibit or limit excessive use of polluting bags. Companies are continuely replacing the old materials with more environmental friendly and recyclable kinds. Scientists have developed more effective technologies in waste treatment. As time goes by, more and more people put high priority on the protection of environment for a healthier life.
To sum up, people produce huge amount of garbage and the environment is seriously polluted because of lack of financial resources, sense of responsibility, or efforts. But the world will not turn into a “throw away” society if people put in sufficient efforts to protect our environment.

In an attempt to provide a better way for citizens to spend their leisure time, it is recommended that more public parks or sports facilities rather than shopping centers should be constructed. As far as I am concerned, I completely agree with this proposal.
To commence with, the construction of sports facilities enables citizens to take more exercise in their free time, which is conducive to both physical and psychological health. In contemporary society, fiercer competition and heavy workload restrain employees from being relaxed, even cause them contract mental diseases such as depression. Supposing that devoted to a basketball or football match after work, they are able to relieve themselves of stress and escape from harsh reality temporarily. As for keeping fitness, it is conceivable that regular exercise strengthens immune system, improves blood circulation as well as increases the size of muscle fibers of body. Consequently, spending free time in sports activities is a preferable choice for the public.
In addition, public parks are places where residents can spend weekends with families and friends. Having a picnic or chatting, reading books, playing games with children are common activities they could do there. What’s more, the young and old can do running, jogging or Tai Chi in the mornings or evenings in parks. Without adequate parks, hardly can people engage in those actives during their free time.
Admittedly, shopping centers are useful business establishments in which people enjoy time off work by purchasing fancy goods. Despite this, merely a small proportion of citizens are able to attain such kind of enjoyment due to their affordability of items in malls. Therefore, investing resources in their construction fails to ensure the majority, particularly the poor and old, enjoy their leisure time.
In conclusion, I firmly support the number of public parks or sport facilities should exceed that of shopping malls, for the reason that the former benefits more people and serves a purpose in leading a healthy lifestyle for citizens.

While the price of real estate is rocketing in metropolitan cities in recent decades, the living space for city dwellers is drastically squeezed. This situation does not only mean the square meter of their home, but also refer to the outdoor public space and commercial buildings they are allowed to utilize.
City residents need space to do outdoor activities. They need to walk their dogs, do exercises, or play with their little children. Equipped with some sports facilities, these places can serve a role of encouraging physical activities and healthy lifestyles. Public open space also facilitates local residents to meet their neighbors and feel to be included in a community. This sense of belonging can be vital for the establishment of a healthy and safe cohesive community. Open areas are the most significant for children. Especially for those children with no siblings, the public ground around their home is the place where they regularly socialize with their peers in their neighborhood.
Of course, plazas, gardens and parks occupy land, posing a real challenge for metropolis planners, who have to balance between the growing demand for residence as well as commercial buildings and recreational infrastructures. Furthermore, the size of such facilities should also be under scrutiny. A large civic central square does not actually serve a better function for local residents than a smaller one around home because the distance travelled between would be long, and this inconvenience can discourage people from regular participation. Imagine the Tiananmen Square, not in Beijing but in a town with small population in a regional area. Would it serve its best to local people?
Therefore, here is my conclusion that citizens deserve large commercial shopping centres for recreational purposes. In the meantime, small sporting facilities ought to be established outside each residential quarter.

The four pie charts compare how many hours male and female workers work per week in government institutions and private companies.
Up to 66% government workers( 30% male ones and and 36% female ones ) work more than 46 hours a week, while only 4% female employees in private companies work so long, considerably lower than that for their male counterparts(34%). However, fewer workers work 31-45 and 13-30 hours a week in government institutions than in private companies. To be more specific, as few as around 10% male and female employees are at work for that time , compared with approximately 23% in private companies.
Although there are 50% workers working 6-12 hours every week in total in both institutions, the figure for women workers in private companies is as many as 35%, different from that for private company male employees (merely 15%) , and for male and female government staff (23% and 27% separately). 23% government male workers work 1-2hours each week, 18% higher than that for those in private companies. It is interesting that the proportion of female workers who are at work 1-2 hours a week in government institution is the same as that in private companies, with both accounting for 18%.
Overall, most employees work more than 46 hours and 6-12 hours in government institutions and private companies.

Dear John and Jane,
I hope this letter finds you well. I’m just writing to thank you both for the holiday and for the photos you sent.
The photos arrived this morning in the post. They reminded me what a great time I had during my stay with you last month. You really were fantastic hosts, and I couldn’t have asked for better guides to show me around.
Sorry I didn’t write to you earlier, but I’ve been working flat out since the moment I arrived home. Do you remember I told you I had an assignment to finish? Well, the deadline was two weeks earlier than I thought it was!
Anyway, I’m back to normal now and I’ve handed in all of my assignments. In fact, now that I’m free, why don’t you both come and stay? There’s a spare room here, so you’re welcome to use it whenever you like.
Hope to see you soon,
Peter

When I phoned your shop to report the problem, I spoke to an assistant who did not know the procedure for repairs or returns. He assured me that he would report the issue to the store manager, and that I would be contacted the same day. That was two days ago, and I am still waiting for your call.
As the appliance is under warranty, I am entitled to ask for it to be repaired or replaced. I have decided that I would like a replacement washing machine. I would also like you to phone me personally when you receive this letter.
I await your prompt response.

Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to inform you that I will be unable to continue with the part-time computer programing course.
I have been attending your evening classes for the last two months, and have enjoyed them immensely. As I stated on my course application form, I work full-time for a large IT company, and until now I have managed to fit the programing course into my schedule.
However, my company is currently on the verge of signing a contract with an important new client in China, and I am part of the team that is being sent to Beijing to negotiate terms and conditions. I will probably be out of the country for several weeks.
I am aware that you run the same course twice a year. Rather than try to catch up when I return from China, I was wondering if it would be possible for me to join the next cohort in September.
I look forward to receiving your response.
Yours sincerely,

Describe what happened that caused you to miss the flight Explain how missing your flight affected you
Make it clear what you would like the airline to do.

Two weeks ago I was due to catch a flight to Rome, where I intended to spend four days on holiday. Unfortunately, the attendant at the check-in desk gave me a boarding card for a different flight, and I did not notice the mistake until I arrived at the departure gate and it was too late.
As a result of the error, I was not allowed to board the flight to Rome, and this caused me great inconvenience. I had to book a new flight two days later, which meant that I missed two days of my holiday and I spent an extra 2200.
As the mistake was caused by your company, I hope that you will compensate me for the cost of the additional flight, as well as for my taxi fares to and from the airport.
I look forward to receiving your response.
Yours faithfully,

You recently went on a trip with a friend and you both took some photographs. Write a letter to your friend. In your letter
ask your friend to send you one of the photographs
explain why you need that particular photograph
and tell your friend what happened to your copy of it.
范文:
Dear Jane,
I hope you've recovered from the trip, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!
I'm just writing to ask whether you could send me a copy of the photo you took of the sun setting over the mountains on the last evening. I think you took some photos of me with the sunset in the background, but there should be one that just shows the sunset.
The reason I'm after that particular photo is that I think it would look great as the screen saver on my laptop. I'm fed up with the stock image that I've got at the moment, and I was hoping to change it for something really stunning that I had taken myself.
I did take a fantastic picture of the sunset, but somehow managed to delete it on my camera. It would be great if you could email a copy to me if you have it.
Speak soon

Task:Some people think parents should read or tell stories to children, while others think parents need not do that, as children can read books, watch TV or movies by themselves. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
It has been rightly said that ‘There have been great societies that did not use the wheel, but there have been no societies that did not tell stories.’ The question of debate is whether parents should read or tell stories to children or whether children should come to know about stories themselves by reading books or by watching TV or movies. In this essay I intend to discuss both views followed by my opinion.
There are many benefits of reading bedtime stories to children. First of all, it encourages family bonding. In this day and age of hectic lives and busy schedules, reading together is a simple and enjoyable way for parents to take time out and focus on the family. Children also feel wanted and loved. What is more, it moulds children into becoming readers, and this significantly increases the child’s potential for academic success as well as lifelong success in general. It also helps children master language development as by listening to stories, children learn pronunciation and vocabulary. It also builds listening skills, increases a child’s attention span, and develops the ability to concentrate. It develops children’s ability to express themselves more confidently, easily, and clearly in spoken and written terms. It develops and fosters a child’s natural curiosity.
Furthermore, it develops creativity and a child’s ability to use his own imagination. It expands children’s horizons by exposing them to new situations, and teaches them appropriate behavior. Reading children’s stories to children provides the best opportunities for true teaching moments as most of these stories have morals. Reading picture books develops a young child’s appreciation for the arts through exposure to many different styles of art and illustrations.
On the other hand, some opine that children should themselves read stories from books or watch them on TV and in movies. When reading books and news on TV by themselves rather than by depending on parents, children have the freedom of making decisions and judgments, thus sharpening the ability of independent thinking. What is more, it is mainly freely reading books, magazines and TV programs in a diversity of subjects, from science to arts to sports that builds up the self-discovery for children, for example, figuring out what subjects and future careers might be suitable for their potentials, talents and interests.
This would be much easier for the parents who are too busy nowadays, but then all the above benefits would not ensue. What is more, parents can start telling stories to children much before children can themselves read. Watching TV does not help the child to develop imagination and this may be detrimental in the long run. Moreover, it would be difficult to monitor what children are actually learning.
To sum up, I believe that, it is always better for the parents as well as the children, if parents read aloud to their children. This would give them quality time together and loads of other benefits which I have discussed above. I pen off with a famous quote of Robert Mackee “Stories are the creative conversion of life itself into a more powerful, clearer, more meaningful experience. They are the currency of human contact.”

The acceleration of industrialization and the prosperity of economy benefit our society a great deal. But with the speeding up of economic development, people are facing more and more pressure from various aspects of their life. This essay will explore the causes for the heavy pressure and put forward some feasible solutions.
One of the major causes is that people’s living rhythm has been promoted immensely with the upgrading of new-knowledge and hi-tech. To keep abreast with the society, people have to work intensively on the one hand and improve their knowledge on the other. The economic globalization strengthened international cooperation and expand people’s scope of activity. The fierce social competition deprives people of their spare time and makes their life more stressful.
Another factor comes from the pressure of people’s family. People in the current society have to shoulder the responsibility of family maintenance. On the one hand, people have to care for their parents, creating for them a happy and comfortable life. On the other hand, they have to give their children good education. To earn more money, people have to work very hard to finance their family.
If people live in heavy pressure, they will have problems both physically and psychologically. To relieve the pressure, I think the following suggestions are feasible and practical. Firstly, people are suggested to go in for some sports games in their spare time or at the weekend. Sports can build up people’s physique and make them vigorous. Secondly, people should communicate with others frequently and confess their trouble and difficulty to others, which is a very magic way to release one’s pressure. Finally, people have to find a balance between money and health. Otherwise, one’s health will be overdrawn and spoiled by money earning.
In brief, good life should not be obtained at the price of the deterioration of one’s health. People should improve their living pattern and lead a life of high quality.

Nowadays, working in a new place or a foreign country distant from homes has been a heated trend in debate. In my view, this change simultaneously brings benefits and risks to these people leaving home, and my reasons would be explored as below.
The main relevant benefits are the improvement of independence and interpersonal skills. Firstly, being away from the comfortable and safe zone built up by parents and friends in homeland, people in a strange environment, especially the youngsters, have to take responsibility for daily affairs, tasks, behaviors, health care and schedules. These efforts can improve their self-care skills and decision-making ability. Moreover, living in a different cultural circumstance, frequently inevitable interactions with local peers and residents who have different skin colors, social manners, lifestyles and religions serve as a catalyst for increased maturity. In other words, after encountering with cultural diversity, these outcomers would become more independent, flexible, patient and adaptable, and acquire proficient social skills as well. Lastly, for people who live and work abroad, they can stay a foreign language immersion for a long term, thus helping them to master how to speak a second language natively.
However, the demerits associated with this kind of emigration should never be ignored. For one thing, as many people, especially young adults, leave hometowns for far-away places, they leave family behind. As a result, extended family systems begin to disintegrate. The result is often a lack of childcare and eldercare for family members. When a younger person leaves, marriage prospects for young adults who decide to stay sill decline.
For another, the second demerit is about a challenge on the spiritual level. Being isolated from family and motherland, an immigrator tends to be troubled in the mental stress. Specifically, the homesick, loneliness, frustration caused by cultural conflicts, and fear about the future always surround these helpless people, and give them psychological suffering all the time.
In conclusion, it is very hard to decide that advantages of this issue outweigh the disadvantages, or the reverse is true. Although such experience is beneficial for the form of independent and social abilities, as well as mature mind, the absence from home is detrimental to the people and their families.

Task:Some people think that in the modern society individuals are becoming more dependent on each other, while others say that individuals are becoming more independent of each other. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Should the level of interdependence between people of today be up or down? This question has been a heated social issue in debate, and resulted in opposite views among the public. Personally, I believe current human is more independent than before, and my reasons will be explored as below.
In terms of information communication, the thriving Internet today has reduced the level of people’s connection with others, because this technology can provide more abundant, timely and objective information to every social individual. In other words, modern people are used to relying on the Internet for the acquirement of news, knowledge, social experience and even answers of school tasks, rather than face-to-face questioning, talking or discussing with others. Therefore, the common interdependent human relationships, such as the ones between students and teachers, between children and parents, between the youth and elders, are fading.
Machinery automation has also contributed much to the independence of people, because this technology makes people self-sufficient. For example, by using artificial intelligent devices like Auto Teller Machine, Vending Machine, microwave ovens, sweeping robots and face recognition access control system, people can deal with day-to-day transactions and household chores, or obtain common goods and services by themselves, with no more reliance on service personals, such as clerks in shops, tellers in bank counters, chefs in restaurants, or doormen in the gateway.
However, the main reason why people become more dependent is about the specialization in the post-industry age. Today, every social individual has been educated and trained to be expert at only one certain field. That is to way, a contemporary employee needs the technological communication and cooperation with co-workers in other departments or with another companies in different subjects, for the purpose of accomplishing the whole working project. Similarly, daily-life running and management are far beyond the limitation of any individual’s abilities. In other words, all people have to seriously depend on others who provide food, news, transportation, entertainment and maintenance of facilities.
In conclusion, I strongly believe the increasing independence of people is dramatic and should not be ignored. Although we are becoming specialized in narrow directions of careers, we have more independence and self-sufficiency, by the support of the Internet and automatic technologies.

The argument correctly states the importance of the governments and large businesses but underestimates the significance of individual human beings in the campaign against environmental problems.
Governments and large businessesplay positive rolesinmaking the earth healthierby reducing the amount of pollutants which humans put into the ocean, sea, river, lake, and atmosphere. The main functions of governments in this campaign are in the field of policy making and legislation. To make policy is to scientifically, effectively, and efficiently organize people, resources, and funds to improve the environments. In this glorious activity launched by man against nature businesses provide financial support in the form of donation and the like. P&G, HP, and IBM all contribute much annually in this concern.
While emphasizing the crucial functions of the governments and businesses, we should not be distracted from the vital roles every individual human being plays in this great and glorious global project. Children, adults, and the elders all are indispensable in cracking the hard nut of pollution and consumption of limited resources. In our dailyroutine, each human being is expected to save the electricity, water, and fossil fuels. For instance, a child is expected to switch off the light when leaving the classroom. In agricultural production, each farmer is supposed to use less pesticide and sufficiently protect the water and soil from erosion. In industrial activities, each employee should conduct his or her activity with environmental ethic concerning. If all people work together, struggle together, and pray together, we will win one day in the future. Yes, lets share the only dream in the diversified world.
In conclusion, if governments, businesses, and individuals all contribute to the environmental programs and projects, then we human beings will enjoy a healthier and happier life in this globe.
It is true that our tiny individual actions often seem insignificantcompared to the scale and complexity of global environmental problems such as pollution, deforestation and depletion of natural resources. But that does not relieve our duty as individuals to do as much as we can to deal with these problems。
Individual actions, small as they may be, can sometimes prove more effective than we realize. We can avoid driving the car, and take public transit, walk, or bicycle instead. This will reduce the use of fossil fuels and cut pollution. Saving energy at home, like turning on the air conditioner only when we have to, or turning water heater down a few degrees, is also ultimately good for the environment. Individual actions can also turn into united powers when, for example, the whole neighborhood is mobilized to participate in a local campaignto oppose environmentally damaging policies。
There are, however, obstacles that stand in the way of individual action towards environmental conservation. The first obstacle is the lack of professional knowledge needed to cope with serious environmental issues like soil erosion and salinity, which requires a significant amount of investigation and research. Another obstacle which makes individual action almost impossible is when an environmental emergency or accident happens, e.g. an oil spill or a nuclear leakage near the border line, which would necessitategovernment engagement or even international coordination。
So, in conclusion, when it comes to environmental problems, individual actions are indispensable in the problem solving process. But the most pressing and complicatedproblems go far beyond an individual’s capability and so require the concerted effort of the government as well as the global community。
(The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate-UCLES)、澳大利亚教育国际开发署(IDP Education Australia)及英国文化委员会(The British Council)三大国际权威学术机构共同设计和组织管理。

2.While advertising is useful for a host of things, from selling products, to putting public announcements on the air, some of the effects are detrimental as they can intentionally misrepresent “real” people in their commercials.
The extent to which people are influenced by advertisements can be measured in terms of the high sales of popular consumer goods, many of them being unnecessary or completely useless. Mainly through the media, advertisements on products and services are able to penetrate the public mind with half truth and half lying. In many cases, consumers are becoming so greedy that they are not only buying things they really do not need but also spending the money they do not have.
Although advertising gives people a chance as consumers, actually most advertisements tend to cause them to desire for something worthless. Under such circumstances, it is easy to change people's need into greed. So much so, they are constantly encouraged to want things--want this and want that. This human behavior is haunted by the media from all fronts: on radio, on television, and online, not to mention printed circulations such as newspapers and magazines. Obviously, a great number of “impulsive” buyers are persuaded under the illusion that new products or services could make a difference in their lives. Despite all the benefits of the free market economy, the effects of unreliable advertising are particularly negative in that the power of advertising does not reflect the real needs of the society in which products and services are sold.
Worse still, many consumers are convinced to waste money they do not have. Surrounded by advertisements, people are too unwise to perform a balanced act between income and expenditure. Increasingly, what seems to be good for economy begins to backfire because advertising is misleading consumers deeply into commercial debts which they probably could not afford to pay in due time. Thus, instead of improving people's lives, advertising may be considered as a “necessary evil” in modern time. Furthermore, as manufacturing and service companies are competing to have a larger share of the market, it is next to impossible to expect the media to reduce the amount of dishonest advertising. Besides, when it comes to making money, companies and the media are in the same religion.
After all, greed being a human instinct, consumers have only themselves to blame for their foolishness toward advertisements. Since outlawing commercial advertising is out of the question, people should educate themselves to be more prudent in buying and spending behaviors. As for consumers, what better measures can be taken to protect themselves other than self-control?

To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statement?Advertising usually encourages consumers to buy a product or service in quantity rather than promoting its quality.Give reasons for your answer and include any examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Advertising is the life of trade as suppliers want to sell things in quantity; however, the success or failure of every advertisement eventually depends on the quality of a product or service. It may be said that a bad investment is going for quantity over quality, without being aware that customers are becoming more careful with their wallets, especially with the sluggish economy right now. While quality sounds hard to define, you know that it is quality rather than quantity that matters.
The greatest thing to be achieved in advertising is believability, and nothing is more believable than the product itself. So, the most powerful element in advertising is the truth, not half lying. For example, a huge advertising campaign will make a bad product fail faster because it will certainly get more people to know that it is bad. In comparison, good advertising can not only circulate information, but it can also penetrate the public mind with belief along with desires. This means that quality is self-evident and that every advertisement should be thought of as a complex symbol which is the brand image. That is probably why word of mouth is the best medium of all. In short, it is advisable for suppliers to always upgrade quality before any attempt to boost sales through advertising.
Although advertising is the most effective way to encourage mass consumption, particularly if the goods are cheap and worthless, the bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low pricing is forgotten. In a certain way, quality is like cooking, and you cannot fake good quality any more than you can fake a good meal. Therefore, quality in a product is not what the supplier puts in; rather, it is what the customer gets out and is willing to pay for. That is to say, a product is not quality simply because it is difficult to make and costs a lot of money in advertising. It is better to think that customers only pay for what is of use to them and give them great value for right price. As can be expected, the advertising strategy to increase popular consumption is likely to result in incompetence since nothing else than the product itself constitutes quality.
In conclusion, just because quality is more important than quantity, it does not mean that advertising does not play a decisive role in influencing the public mind. The point is that consumers have now become more prudent in spending behaviors and hence are no longer as penny-wise and quality-foolish as before. In all events, suppliers should continue investing in advertising their quality products because, if they stop advertising to save money, it would be as stupid as stopping the clock to save time.

Currently, a debatable argument over whether children should be exposed to the environment teeming with TV advertising has already aroused public’s attention. According to the discussion, this article tends to focus on the effects it may cause on little children as well as point out the opinion towards whether it should be limited or not.
The first concern should be the influence it may exert on the younger generation. This, to a large extent is due to both physical and mental effects. On the one hand, companies always post some images as well as flashes on screens for the sake of attracting children, and thus long-time exposure to those colorful pictures may cause damages to their eyesight. On the other hand, profit-oriented advertising stimulates the eagerness for children to purchase some unnecessary commodities such as junk food and toys, which contributes to the development of their unhealthy diet or living habits. Besides, negative information such as violence or pornography may find their way in television advertising, which to some extent may leave a negative impression on the youth.
However, in terms of the issue whether TV commercials for children should be less adopted, the answer depends on the influence it may impose on children. For those that provide little children with a large amount of useful information, limitation should not be taken into consideration. This is due to the fact that those ads about educational events can develop children’s cognitive abilities, artistic creativity pt active lifestyle. Nevertheless, to another concern, for these advertisement that cause wasteful consumption, they should be regulated by the government, since those may leas to a long-term effect on the rates of children’s diet-related disease, such as obesity and high-blood pressure.
In a nutshell, the impacts that television commercials exert on the younger generation should be analyzed both physically and mentally. Individually, laws or regulation only need to be imposed on those which contain negative information.
Researchers show that overeating is as harmful as smoking. Therefore, advertising for food products should be banned in the same way as the cigarette, advertising is banned in many countries. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
第一段:Introduction;
Nowadays, modern people are not only satisfied with a great variety of delicious food but obsessed with overeating as well. There exists a common voice that the advertising of some certain food contributing to this annoying phenomenon should be banned, but I doubt it.
Confessedly, the ban can shield people from the heavy exposure to the advertising of certain food products. Since advertising, people’s major access to the information of new food products, always takes advantage of multimedia method to exaggerate and beautify products. Stimulated and encouraged by such kind of advertising, people usually feel it difficult to resist the temptation of nice food. If not influenced by the advertising, people will probably enjoy a well balanced diet and overeating will be avoided. But wait a second, does food advertising really have so great power of persuasion? If without such advertising, will people really be not troubled by overeating? The answer may be negative.
第三段:有广告不一定会overeating;
One reason is that the advertising of certain food may not lead to overeating.
第四段:cigarette广告禁止,不一定nice food广告也要禁止;
In addition, the ban of smoking is not the grounds of the ban of certain food advertising.
第五段:Conclusion;
As the prohibition of certain food advertising cannot address the issue of overeating, it is not necessary to ban it.
The rise in the crime rate in recent years has stimulated public to rethink the cause of criminality. Some people take the position that social environment and wealth may be the two influential factors while many other people maintain that someone is bound to be a criminal. Personally, I side with the former position but go against the other one, meanwhile, whether to commit a crime is highly depend on personal choices,
Circumstance is a parameter of importance which will considerably affect crime rate. Very few people will commit a crime in an environment- friendly country with a sound welfare system. For example, every individual in Switzerland owns a gun but the crime rate is extremely low, this is mainly because Switzerland is a harmonious and wealthy country. Besides, it is a fact that crime rate will change along with social circumstance. For instance, during the American Great Depression, there is an obvious increase in theft and robbery. When business is depressed, many unemployed people will choose to offend for survival.
The other view, some people are born criminals, seemingly does not hold water. There is no doubt that some criminals have genetic character flaws. However, it not only means people with criminal genes tend to but will not always do a crime. Their potential anti-social behavior is avoidable if they are given enough care and attention.
My opinion about the issue is that criminality is a personal behavior. Some well-educated people are going to be hackers to conduct Internet economic crime in some developed countries like America. They are not poor or naturally offensive. In fact, they just want to show their ability and high intelligence. By comparison, people who live in a country with social unrest will not necessarily commit a crime. Instead, most people used to work hard and enjoy their life.
To summarize, nobody is a criminal by nature. Social environment is a significant but not determining factor to crime. Criminals rely on personal behavior to a high degree.
Paper Recycling
You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 30-41 which are based on the Reading Passage below.
PAPER RECYCLING
A Paper is different from other waste produce because it comes from a sustainable resource: trees. Unlike the minerals and oil used to make plastics and metals, trees are replaceable. Paper is also biodegradable, so it does not pose as much threat to the environment when it is discarded. While 45 out of every 100 tonnes of wood fibre used to make paper in Australia comes from waste paper, the rest comes directly from virgin fibre from forests and plantations. By world standards, this is a good performance since the worldwide average is 33 percent waste paper. Governments have encouraged waste paper collection and sorting schemes and at the same time, the paper industry has responded by developing new recycling technologies that have paved the way for even greater utilization of used fibre. As a result, industry’s use of recycled fibres is expected to increase at twice the rate of virgin fibre over the coming years.
B Already, waste paper constitutes 70% of paper used for packaging and advances in the technology required to remove ink from the paper have allowed a higher recycled content in newsprint and writing paper. To achieve the benefits of recycling, the community must also contribute. We need to accept a change in the quality of paper products; for example, stationery may be less white and of a rougher texture. There also needs to support from the community for waste paper collection programs. Not only do we need to make the paper available to collectors but it also needs to be separated into different types and sorted from contaminants such as staples, paperclips, string and other miscellaneous items.
C There are technical limitations to the amount of paper which can be recycled and some paper products cannot be collected for re-use. These include paper in the form of books and permanent records, photographic paper and paper which is badly contaminated. The four most common sources of paper for recycling are factories and retail stores which gather large amounts of packaging material in which goods are delivered, also offices which have unwanted business documents and computer output, paper converters and printers and lastly households which discard newspapers and packaging material. The paper manufacturer pays a price for the paper and may also incur the collection cost.
D Once collected, the paper has to be sorted by hand by people trained to recognise various types of paper. This is necessary because some types of paper can only be made from particular kinds of recycled fibre. The sorted paper then has to be repulped or mixed with water and broken down into its individual fibres. This mixture is called stock and may contain a wide variety of contaminating materials, particularly if it is made from mixed waste paper which has had little sorting. Various machineries are used to remove other materials from the stock. After passing through the repulping process, the fibres from printed waste paper are grey in colour because the printing ink has soaked into the individual fibres. This recycled material can only be used in products where the grey colour does not matter, such as cardboard boxes but if the grey colour is not acceptable, the fibres must be de-inked. This involves adding chemicals such as caustic soda or other alkalis, soaps and detergents, water-hardening agents such as calcium chloride, frothing agents and bleaching agents. Before the recycled fibres can be made into paper they must be refined or treated in such a way that they bond together.
E Most paper products must contain some virgin fibre as well as recycled fibres and unlike glass, paper cannot be recycled indefinitely. Most paper is down-cycled which means that a product made from recycled paper is of an inferior quality to the original paper. Recycling paper is beneficial in that it saves some of the energy, labour and capital that go into producing virgin pulp. However, recycling requires the use of fossil fuel, a non-renewable energy source, to collect the waste paper from the community and to process it to produce new paper. And the recycling process still creates emissions which require treatment before they can be disposed of safely. Nevertheless, paper recycling is an important economical and environmental practice but one which must be carried out in a rational and viable manner for it to be useful to both industry and the community.

Kinetic energy is the energy of moving particles.
Typhoons are cyclones, storms with strong winds rotating around a low-pressure center. 在这种解释中定义句的谓语动词多为:be, mean, deal with, be considered, to be, refer to, be called, be known as, define, represent, signify, constitute等。
Experts in kinesics, in their study of body motion as related to speech ,hope to discover new methods of communications.
另外同位语前还常有or, similarly, that is to say, in other words, namely, or other, 等副词或短语出现。 Obesity, which is a medical disorder that affects approximately 20-30% of the population of the United States of America. It is an excessive accumulation of body fat that results from the storage of excess food energy calories in the body's fat cells.
根据生词obesity后面的非限制性定语从句which is a medical disorder that affects approximately 20-30% of the population of the United States of America. It is an excessive accumulation of body fat that results from the storage of excess food energy calories in the body's fat cells.
The consequences of epochal events such as wars and great scientific discoveries are not confined to a small geographical area as they were in the past.
Computers have been used for most kinds of crime, including fraud theft, larceny, embezzlement, burglary, sabotage, murder and forgery, since the first cases were reported in 1985.
Goran Ivanisevic fears only one service in tennis -- Michael Stichs. His toss is always the same: the straight one or the topspin. Sampras has a good serve and Becker too, but Stichs is the toughest to read.
In Tarkovsky’s opinion, the attraction of the cinema is that it
A aims to impress its audience.
B tells stories better than books.
C illustrates the passing of time.
D describes familiar events.
The frightened audience could not accept that they were watching a mere picture. Pictures were still, only reality moved; this must, therefore, be reality. In their confusion, they feared that a real train was about to crush them. The key to that magic was the way in which cinema created a dynamic image of the real flow of events. A still picture could only imply the existence of time, while time in a novel passed at the whim of the reader. But in cinema, the real, objective flow of time was captured.
A recent survey found that in British secondary schools,
A there was more bullying than had previously been the case.
B there was less bullying than in primary schools.
C cases of persistent bullying were very common.
D indirect forms of bullying were particularly difficult to deal with.
There was less bullying in secondary schools, with about one in twenty-five suffering persistent bullying. very common和one in twenty-five的比例是明显不符的。
Genetically-modified organisms(GMOs)are a double-edged sword(双刃剑)。
这些常用的有:although,though,while,on the other hand,however,rather,but,despite,in spite of等。
解释原因的:because,because of,due to,result from,as a result of,be a consequence of,be attributed to;表示结果的:as a result,result in,lead to,cause,contributed to.

《how to prepare for ielts》其他任何备考书都可以不买,这本必须买!
,出品了姊妹篇《insight into ielts extra》。
《101 helpful hints for ielts 》、《202 useful exercises for ielts》,虽说可能有些过时了,但确是很重要的基础训练教材。
《how to prepare for ielts》、《cambrdige ielts 2》和《cambrdige ielts 3》里的听力,在考前可以精做一下。
而解题的过程实际上是skimming(略读)、scanning(扫读)和close reading(细读)这三中阅读能力的综合。
雅思阅读对于词汇量要求较高。根据统计,雅思阅读要获得不错的成绩需要掌握5000多个单词,而且其中还以常见的动词、形容词语或名词为主(专有术语和专有名词往往对于解题和理解不会有太多的影响)。对于许多考生而言这在短期内是一个难以逾越的障碍。在克服这点困难上,语法的作用主要体现在以下两个方面;
The new Nokia handset boasts of a ___ and ____.
Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that improve the mind, such as reading and doing word puzzles. Other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time.
Model Answer:
It is generally accepted that we all need leisure time to recover from the stresses of work and everyday life.
Personally, I prefer to be active during this time, as I think this suits me better. However, what we do with our leisure time is up to us and no one can say that any particular activity is the best.
Some people relax by watching movies, reading or surfing the internet. People who have physically demanding jobs may choose these types of activities. If you are a nurse or builder, you may feel that you don't want to do a five-kilometre run after work, because you are already physically tired.
Other people do very sedentary jobs. Computer analysts, for example, may spend all day sitting in front of a computer screen. At the end of the working day, they may be keen to stretch their limbs and improve their health by swimming or going to the gym.
Another factor that influences our choice of leisure pursuit is where we work. People who work indoors often prefer outdoor hobbies, whereas for people who work outdoors, the reverse may be true. I am a student myself and this involves a lot of sitting in lectures, so I need to get out into the fresh air afterwards.
In any situation, the important thing is that people need to stay healthy by choosing what is best for them. The only wrong way to spend free time, in my view, is to have a sedentary job and then go home and watch television.

题目
In many countries, women are allowed to take maternity leave from their jobs during the first months after the birth of their baby. Do the advantages outweigh disadvantages?
In some countries, women are privileged to have a time-off lasting for several months after they give birth to their babies. From my perspective, the benefits of this dwarf the drawbacks.
Taking several months away from work tends to have a favourable influence on the primiparas involved. The key reason lies in the fact that the maternity enables these women to embrace the precious time to recover after suffering months of pregnancy and unbearable pain of delivering a baby. Thus it is likely for them to refresh themselves, which is the prerequisite for them to continue the work and cope with the challenges in later life.
As well as the benefits to the new moms, their infants can also be affected positively if their mothers are granted with the maternity leave. In the first few months after the baby comes to the world, they are vulnerable to various diseases and thirsty for the breeding. As a result, the care and company from their mothers seem to be indispensable.
There are, however, certain disadvantages in taking time-off. These female workers may find their positions to be replaced by the successors. When they return to the company after the break, they tend to earn less and enjoy fewer promotions compared with before. They will encounter more difficulties in climbing up the career ladder. However, in my view, these problems are less likely today and there is much that can be done to address these issues constructively. The government should enact laws to ensure women can hold the previous position and their salaries should never be lower than before. Those companies which disobey the rules will be fined and criticized openly on the media.

Task:In some countries around the world men and women are having children late in life. What are the reasons for this development? What are the effects on society and family life?
Sample answer:
In the modern world, young adults prefer to raise children late in their life. This essay will mainly analyze the potential reasons and how it will affect society and family life as well.
There are three main factors contributing to the postponed parenthood. In general, people who bear great pressure from their work are less likely to prepare childbirth early, considering that they may have little time to attend their children. This problem can also be attributed to the high cost of modern life. The young people without adequate savings will probably be afraid of high living cost and expensive tuition. Another reason for this is the difficulty in balancing work and life. More young people emphasize the promotion in career, and thus spare little time for a stable marriage life which is viewed as a significant element for rearing children.
It cannot be denied that late childbirth is able to provide more time for young couples to be ready for the new members in their families. They need to learn how to raise children before they decide to have children. In addition, if they delay childbirth, they can provide more economic support for children’s rearing and education.
However, the low birth rate will cause an increase in aging population. It is widely known that most medical needs and costs occur in the last years of life. Therefore, young people have to face the need to care for the elderly family members. From the perspective of the society, due to a shift in the age structure of the workforce, an aging society with a low birthrate is likely to encounter labour shortage. To summarize, the delay in having children is mainly attributed to the stress and strains men and women bear in both their life and work. Although this may help them better prepare for their children’s development, the negative effects on both society and family life cannot be ignored.

Task:Some people think that the best way to improve road safety is to increase the minimum legal age for driving cars and motorcycles. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample answer:
It is sometimes argued that increasing the minimum age for unsupervised driving is the optimal way to ensure road safety. While the proposal seems feasible, I believe other solutions should be fully considered as well.
On the one hand, I agree that teenage drivers are more likely to have collisions on the road, compared to drives in other age groups. This is because young driver, especially those who are in adolescence, tend to overestimate their driving abilities and underestimate the dangers on the road. For example, because of behavioural characteristics of youth, adolescents have a weak awareness of safety. They are very likely to drive faster than the speed limit or mimic those dangerous shots shown in the movie, such as drifting, which can lead to car accidents on roads.
Nevertheless, apart from controlling the legal age strictly, I believe that other measures can be taken to prevent deaths and serious injuries. Firstly, the government might set higher standards for testing drivers’ ability to drive and prolong the training time since better prepared drivers and riders can reduce the number of incidents. Besides, a right attitude plays a vital role in ensuring the road safety. For instance, eating, drinking, or talking on the phone while driving should be prohibited as these activities might distract driver's attention and cause some unexpected consequences. Finally, for those disqualified drivers, who have serious crash record, retest is a must.
In conclusion, although the lowest legal age can prevent some disqualified drivers on the road, other considerations are equally important in tacking this issue.

People in all modern societies use drugs, but today's youth are expertimenting with both legal and illegal drugs, and at an increasingly early age. Some sociologists claim that parents and other members of society often set a bad example.
Discuss the causes and some effects of widespread drug use by young people in modern day society. Make any recommendations you feel are necessary to help fight youth drug abuse.
Model Answer:
Youth drug abuse is a serious problem nowadays in many cultures. Not only is illegal drug use on the rise, but children as young as 10 years old are experimenting with alcohol and tobacco. The reasons for this behaviour are unclear, but certain sociologists blame the examples set by their elders. Parents who drink and smoke to excess are, in effect, telling their children that it is acceptable to abuse their bodies with drugs. Consequently, children may have a similar view towards illegal drugs, even if their parents are against their use. In addition, drug use shown on television and in films can only confuse children who are also taught at school that drug abuse is wrong.
The pressure on young people to perform well at school in order to compete for jobs is a possible cause of the problem. Many believe they cannot live up to their parents' expectations, and feel a sense of hopelessness. Also, the widespread availability of drugs means teenagers are faced with the temptation to experiment. Drugs are used as a means of expressing dissatisfaction with the pressures they face in society.
The effects of drug abuse are well known. Many young people's talents are wasted, and addiction to hard drugs can cost a user his or her life. Furthermore, those who drink and drive may be involved in fatal road accidents. The cost to society is great, and enormous amounts of money are spent on convicting drug dealers and on education programmes.
To conclude, I recommend that the only sensible way to solve this problem is to educate young people about the dangers of drug use, and to take steps to reduce the pressure of competition placed upon them.

Children are committing more crimes. What are the causes of the phenomenon? How should they be punished?
Reasons:
1 economic pressure, parents busy with work
2 small family
3 pressure from parents and from school as well
How to punish them:
1 deprive of freedom
2 work for local community
范文:
Youth crime contributes significantly to the increasing crime rate in the modern society. There is no doubt that these young delinquents take their punishment, but I prefer in different ways.
The reasons for this phenomenon are worth of scrutiny. In China with the economy booming, pressure from competition at work and business force parents to work hard, leaving insufficient time to their children. Without enough love from the family, these adolescents tend to do something astounding, sometimes slip beyond control. In addition, the one child policy in my country also contributes to higher crime rate because these little “emperors” are brought up in such a way that some of them are self-centered and tolerant of little. When confronted with difficulties or injustice, they are prone to resort to violence. Although spoiled, they have to live up to the high expectation of their parents in the name of love. Under such pressure from the family and school as well, they tend to be rebellious to their parents and teachers, in some cases the society as a whole.
When teenagers commit crimes, surely penalty should be given, especially the youth who commit serious crimes such as homicide or rape. No one should be excluded from justice, and justice has to be served. Depriving criminals of their freedom by imprisoning them, no matter how old they are, is the most effective measure to prevent crime and protect the lawful civilians in the society. Violent teenagers are as dangerous as their mature counterparts, hence should be put behind bars until they are no longer a threat to the public security.
On the other hand, most teenager crimes are minor, like vandalism, fighting or theft which does not do serious harm to victims. The immature behave in an illegal but less violent manner mostly for fun, or to show their courage to impress their peers or to attract their busy parents’ eyes. In these cases, they should be given some opportunities to be corrected and eventually come back to the right track rather than being judged as adults who commit crime deliberately with full awareness of the consequences of their conduct. Instead of being jailed, young lawbreakers can be forced to repair the damage to their neighborhood or local community, and offer their sincere apology to the victims or do some community duties such as serving the elderly in local nursing home.
To sum up, I personally reckon that political policy and the utilitarianism of educators should be responsible for today’s increasing juvenile delinquency. I agree with harsh treatment under the circumstances of serious crime. But if the offence is not major, adolescent criminals should be given alternative punishments like community service in order to reform them to be lawful citizens rather than being jailed.

Task:Many people are afraid to leave their homes because of their fear of crimes. Some people believe that more actions should be taken to prevent crime, but others feel that little can be done. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Sample answer:
With a rapid increase of crime, more citizens are scared of aggressive acts all over the world. As to whether more measures can be taken to stop crime, there is an endless debate. From my personal view, although more actions cannot fully guarantee the security of the whole society, it is not the reason for which people can surrender to violence.
Clearly, actions such as enacting more strict laws and legislation can effectively curb the frequency of crime. Fearing punishment is usually the mature of humans, so when they are informed of the consequence of committing crimes, they are more prone to stop doing anti-social acts. In addition, providing more education contributes to raise people’s safety awareness and consequently prevents crime. As the Internet prevails information about laws and legislation are more achievable, and thus there is a possibility that people are given more opportunities to learn how to distinguish right from wrong.
However, feasible measures are still not a panacea to the establishment of a completely safe society. If governments fail to guarantee a basic living standard for their citizens, crime rate will hardly be controlled. It is widely believed that a decent job and sufficient disposable income can reduce the possibility of committing socially unacceptable behaviour. The insecurity of society can also be attributed to the fact that it is less possible for governments to eradicate all factors leading to crime. Illegal drugs and alcohol are more accessible than before. People may have to commit crimes in order to get these items.
To conclude, reasonable actions including making severe policies and offering educations are of great help to control criminal events. However, they may still not be able to ensure a secure living environment for people if fundamental needs of materials cannot be fulfilled.

Task:Young people who commit crimes should be treated in the same way as adults by authorities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample answer:
It is sometimes argued that young lawbreakers should be tried as adults for crimes. I personally believe that this is partly reasonable.
On the one hand, those who participate in violent crimes should not be treated differently than adult offenders. This is because most crimes, such as rape or murder, are thoughtful, deliberate and cunning in its planning and execution. If our courts trend toward a more lenientposition, then the related laws and punishment will not have a deterring effect on teenagers. As a result, teenagers are likely to commit horrible crimes since they are aware that they have legal protection. What’s worse, these teens might recommit after they are released from jails. In some cases, the lighter sentencing might also lead to resentment towards the judicial system as victims might argue that these young offenders do not confess what they have done. This could also result in insecurity in our society eventually.
On the other hand, the circumstances of a crime and its motivation should be taken into consideration when it comes to juvenile delinquency. For example, because of distress and hunger, some teens may turn to stealing food or robbery during a period of famine. Under this circumstance, harsh punishment, such as long-term jail might not be the best solution. In my view, most of the young offenders lack parenting and self-discipline, which would mean that other alternatives, such as community service and rehabilitation might be better alternatives for them.
In conclusion, I feel that it is vitally important for judges and state legislators to ensure the justice equality regardless of the criminal’s age.

Task:Some people who have been in prison become good citizens later. Some people think that they are the best people to talk to school students about the danger of committing a crime. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample answer:
A child’s education has never been about learning information and basic skills only. It has always included teaching the next generation how to become law-abiding citizens. While some people claim that those ex-prisoners are the best teachers to raise the awareness regarding laws, I believe that other measures are equally effective.
Obviously, ex-prisoners play a vital role in cutting youth crime. This is because those released prisoners have witnessed the horrors happened in the jail and they may also experience some of them. At the same time, they can share the tears and sorrows they suffered in the jails and the harm they have brought to the victims and their family members. This is more impressive than the traditional lectures given by professors. By listening to a wide range of real cases in person, young generation will realize the consequence of the irresponsible behavior deeply and discipline themselves strictly in the future.
Nevertheless, I believe other alternatives should be taken into consideration as well. It is common for people to have a fear towards criminals, especially those who have committed violent crimes and therefore face-to-face conversation between the young and people with a criminal record might be inappropriate in some cases. By contrast, policemen normally have a good impression among youngsters and they can become the active voice in reducing juvenile delinquency. Apart from them, parents can certainly be the first to help children learn the differences between right and wrong since they are the people who know their children best in the world.
In my opinion, it is the responsibility of every member of a society to help the young generation to become good citizens.

Task:In some countries, a high proportion of criminal acts are committed by teenagers. Why has this happened? What can be done to deal with this?
Sample answer:
In recent years, the proportion of crimes committed by teenagers has increased dramatically and this has caused a widespread discussion. Media violence and unstable family life may be the two main factors leading to adolescents’ criminal tendency. Both of them will be discussed in detail below, followed by solutions.
The lack of family life should take responsibility for juvenile delinquency. Most parents educate their children in an impropriate way like beating and abusing. Even now, may parents still hold a view that a good son is a product of the rod. This educational method will leave children a misleading impression about violence when they are very young, and they are more likely to become real offenders in the future. To solve this problem, parents should adjust parenting at home, interacting with their children more frequently and giving more attention and care especially emotional needs.
Excessive exposure to media violence also plays a big role in the increase of youth crime. As we all know, the violence shots are prevalent in many films and TV games, which affects young people the most. Teenagers who lack self-discipline tend to imitate their fantasy hero’s criminal behavior after watching action films in real situations. Actually, these teenagers are misled by their heroes. In this case, the government should set a rating and censorship system in order to control the amount of violence, threat and horror on screen.
In conclusion, family life and media violence are main triggers of juvenile delinquency. Parents should transform their ways to care and educate their children. Meanwhile, governments should provide a healthy environment on the screen.

Task:Young people who commit serious crimes should be punished in the same way as adults. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Should young criminals be punished on the same level of adults, as some people argue? Personally, I agree with is assertion partially, while it underestimates the importance of a flexible judgment on youngsters.
The main reason of using the same standard to punish the youth is, it deters them from further crimes. Today, the main cause of juvenile crimes increasing is a lenient juvenile judicial system and milder punishments like lighter sentences, shortened prison terms, or even probation. Youngsters think they can always get off easily, regardless the seriousness of crimes. Therefore, it is necessary for juvenile offenders to be tried as strictly as adults, which lets these youngsters know that they are not exempt from heavy penalties, and not given any special consideration because of their age factor. By this way, their desires of making illegal activities would be inhibited.
However, to a large extent, juvenile judicial system should be flexible. Psychologically speaking, youngsters under the age of 18 are immature, with less social experience and concepts about social rules, or with no recognition about the consequence. In many cases, young criminals have no idea that what they do is illegal. For example, compared with adult criminals who have the definite plans and goals to make money by hunting or killing victims, the testimony of many teenage thieves and robbers proves that their movements are purposeless, and the main reasons for them to do so are no more than peer pressure and impulsiveness. Therefore, when it comes to the fact that adult criminals are intentional but young ones are unintentional, it is reasonable to treat and trial them differently.
In conclusion, a flexible juvenile judicial system should be encouraged. Although a strict punishment to young offenders as adults might be a profound education for young generations, sentences on young offenders should be lighter, considering the fact that their intentions of breaking law are fundamentally different from that of adults.
