真诚的, 爱玛老师 *** 3/2/ Dear Ms. Emma, In the first book in the series, Max rescued a girl named Ella from a bunch of big mean bullies with guns.  But she was hurt bad so Ella took Max into her house where Max met Ella’s mom, which she later found out was her own mom too. I don’t know exactly why Max has to save the world, only that she was somehow destined to save the world.  She needs to try to save it from pollution and global warming and stuff like that. I don’t know how they are tracked.  Close enough, but she also needs to save the world. I just finished The Dangerous Days of Daniel X, by James Petterson & Michael Ledwidge.  It is about a boy named Daniel whose parents were murdered by aliens and so he tries to destroy all of the bad aliens. Daniel only has Level 3 strength, but he is smart.  In the end when he killed Ergent Seth, who had Level 7 speed and Level 7 strength, he baited Seth, then turned into a tick, crawled inside Seth’s head, then turned into an elephant. I just finished Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo.  It is about how a dog named Winn-Dixie changes Opal’s life. I think Kate DeCamillo has a fair share of sadness, maybe that’s why she made so much sad stuff in the story  I think she thought the story would be too sad if Winn-Dixie was lost forever so she made Opal and the Preacher find Winn-Dixie.   Sincerely,   Ben *** 3/8/2010 Dear Ben, All great authors draw on the past for inspiration.  I’m sure she knew a kid or two like Opal, as well as a Gloria Dump and someone like the Preacher.  The book was made into a movie.  Have you seen it? Please comment on one of the themes of the book: friendship, hope, new beginnings, companionship. Have you read other books by Kate Dicamillo?  I have others you can read. Sincerely, Ms. Emma

Words & Idioms Lesson 59

a fish out of water

to teach a fish how to swim

美国人常用的一个俗语却刚好和「如鱼得水」相反,他们说:a fish out of water。

1: “At the conference I was a fish out of water. All the speeches were in French, a language I never studied.”

2: “Everybody else at the party ended up in the swimming pool. But I was a fish out of water because I can't swim.”

下面我们要讲解的一个习惯用语就是这个意思:to teach a fish how to swim。To teach a fish how to swim作为俗语的意思是指班门弄斧:给别人提出完全没有必要的建议或劝告。

3: “My son, fresh out of college, keeps telling me how to run my business. But I've been making good money for 30 years so he's teaching a fish how to swim.”

例句-4: “The day after I got my private pilot's license, I told this man at the party all about how to fly an airplane. Later I learned he was an airline pilot who flew jumbo jets -- I'd been teaching a fish how to swim.”

a fish out of water。A fish out of water是指一个人处于一种使他很难堪,很别扭的场合。我们今天讲的第二个习惯用语是to teach a fish how to swim。To teach a fish how to swim是指给别人提供毫无必要,完全多余的建议或劝告。

Words & Idioms Lesson 39

to have a heart

cross my heart

Aw, come on -- have a heart!”

To have a heart To have a heart

1: “Hey, Dad, have a heart and let me use the new car; I have this big date with Jennie tonight.”

2: “Charlie, I know I've owed you the hundred bucks for a long time. But, have a heart: give me a little more time because I really don't have it right now.”

3: “Billy, cross my heart, it wasn't me who broke your bicycle.”

4: “Honey, cross my heart, I've never looked at another woman since the first day I set eyes on you! Believe me, that's the truth!”

第一个是 to have a heart。

Words & Idiom 49

to stand on one's own two feet

to throw oneself at someone's feet

第一个是:to stand on one's own two feet。 To stand on one's own two feet

1: “Son, somebody may try to get you to smoke marijuana or drink, just to fit in with the crowd. But I hope you can stand on your own two feet and say no.”

例句-2: “Bill Brown has managed to stay in Congress now for twenty years. The voters don't always agree with him but they really like the way he stands on his own feet and makes his own decisions on which way to vote, regardless of pressures from all the lobbyists.”

今天我们要讲的第二个习惯用语是: to throw oneself at someone's feet。 To throw oneself at someone's feet

3: “I'm still looking for the right girl to marry. And when I find her, I'll throw myself at her feet and ask her to spend the rest of her life with me.”

To throw oneself at someone's feet

4: “The prisoner who has been convicted as a traitor threw himself at the feet of the judge and beg for mercy.”

第一个是: to stand on one's own two feet,这是指一个人很独立自主,不依赖别人。

rain check

It never rains but it pours

1: “Say, I'm sorry but we just sold the last TV set we had on sale. But I'll give you a raincheck so you can still get the special price when we get in a fresh stock a couple weeks from now.”

Rain check

2: “I'd love to go out with you, Ben. I'm sorry I'm busy tonight, but I'd like a rain check.”

It never rains but it pours。It never rains but it pours It never rains but it pours

3: “I really feel sorry for Mike. First his wife left him. Next he lost his job. Then somebody stole his car. Like they say, it never rains but it pours.”

You can't believe the trouble I had today. My alarm clock didn't go off, so I missed biology class. Then, I lost my home work assignment for math. I invited my girlfriend to lunch and after we ate, I found I'd left my wallet at home. It never rains but it pours.”

今天我们讲了两个和雨有关的俗语,它们是 rain check 和 it never rains but it pours。

真诚的, 爱玛老师 ***     11/4/ Dear Ms. Emma,   Patrick volunteered for the army.  He said that he was a complete idiot for doing that.  I think when he enlisted he didn’t know how horrible war actually was.  After he was in the war for a few months, he actually forced himself not to make any new friends, just in case they died.  I don’t really know if Patrick believed the U.S. was right about helping South Vietnam.   Right now, I am reading The Random House Book of HUMOR for Children.  It consists of funny short stories, or chapters or sections of other books.   In Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s Magic, I don’t think the children should always say “Oh, I thought you said…” Even though it is funny, it drives the parents crazy, and is annoying. In The Elephant’s Child, I think the adults don’t always have to spank the Elephant’s Child whenever he gets curious, or asks a question.   In The Moth and the Star, the father moth thinks that if your wings get singed, or burned, it is a very big honor.  But the child moth didn’t listen and didn’t get burned at all, which let him live far longer than his father or brothers.   In The Fools of Chelm and the Stupic Carp, I think the people of Chelm are very stupid. It started when Zeinvel Ninny brought a live carp to Gronam Ox, the leader of Chelm.  The carp slapped Ox with its tail, so Ox got angry.  He held lots of trials, but couldn’t decided what to do with it.  Finally, he decided the carp should be drowned.  Everybody thought that was a great idea.   Sincerely,   Ben *** 11/9/2009 Dear Ben,   The Elephant’s Child is originally from Just So Stories for Little Children by Rudyard Kipling, the author of The Jungle Book.  These types  of stories are called pourquoi stories because they tell accounts of how various phenomena came about. What phenomena does The Elephant’s Child describe?   The Moth and the Star is a fable by James Thurber and was first printed in the story collection Fables for Our Time in 1940. This one teaches a lesson.  What lesson did the young moth learn?   How many stories have you read from the book?   Sincerely,   Ms. Emma

真诚的,   爱玛老师 ***   12/15/2009 Dear Ms. Emma, Here are some of his mistakes or setbacks: When he tried to start a fire, his fuel was wrong and it took a while to make one.  Another one was when he made a fishing spear; he didn’t aim right and always missed.  Some of his triumphs were: When he started his first fire, when he first killed a fish, and the first time he killed and ate actual meat instead of fish every day.  It didn’t really say much about when he went back to the real world, but it did say that he remained lean and wiry for several more years and also since he left the woods, he always thought carefully before saying or doing anything, and he also noticed much more than before. Right now I am reading Irish Immigrants in America.  It is a You Choose Book, you can choose what you want to do in the book. In this book, I learned that being an Irish immigrant at that time was very hard.  None of the jobs paid much money to them, and a lot of the jobs were dangerous.  I just finished The Japanese American Internment, by Rachael Hanel, which is also a You Choose Book. In this book I think it is very unfair that so many Japanese Americans were forced out of jobs and lives into Relocation Camps.  Also, even though they didn’t do anything wrong, even after the war, they still faced lots of discrimination. Right now I am reading Flush, by Carl Hiaasen.  It is about a boy named Noah, trying to prove that Dusty Muleman, whose ship was sunk by Noah’s dad, was illegally dumping sewage into the water. Noah’s dad loves the environment and animals, and a lot of times, if he sees someone mistreating animals or polluting the environment, he would overreact.  I think it is unfair that he was jailed and couldn’t prove what Dusty was doing.   Your student,   Ben *** 1/4/ Dear Ben, Have you read other books by Carl Hiaasen?  He was born and raised in Florida and even went to the University of Florida. He later went to work for the newspaper, The Miami Herald, where he wrote the Crime Section.  He got many of his book ideas from real life crime stories in Florida. How do Noah and Abbey help their dad prove Dusty Muleman was dumping sewage from the boat’s holding tank?   Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的,   爱玛老师 *** 10/27/ Dear Ms. Emma, Yes, I do like his style of writing.  It’s written so that it actually sounds like someone is telling the story in his own words. It is very easy to understand his books.  My favorite book by him is The World’s Dumbest Crooks. Right now, I am reading The Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty. The book is tragic with lots of deaths and injuries. About half he whole platoon died against the NVA in two days. Rotgut, one of the original guys in Patrick’s squad, just came back.  Everybody had thought he was dead when he was shot two times.  Everybody was relieved. I can’t believe how many people died in two months.  Only four of the squad members since Patrick came (including Patrick) are still in the squad.  The others are either dead, or in the hospital. The ending was really sad.  The place where Patrick had been was bombed by NVA rockets.  Patrick’s best friend Bebop died.  Another one of his friends, the Professor, lost both his legs, and he was blinded.  Patrick had a really serious injury too, so they sent him home.  He was very sad.   Your student,                   Ben *** 11/2/2009 Dear Ben, The Vietnam War was a military conflict that started in 1959 and ended in 1975!  We, and other anti-communist countries, were fighting the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese.  We started fighting in this war to prevent the communist from taking over S. Vietnam. About 60,000 US soldiers died.  That’s about the size of our city.  I was not surprised to read that many of Patrick’s squad members were dead or injured.  Many soldiers came home in wheelchairs, with limbs amputated, blind, or without their hearing.  These soldiers saw horrible, horrible things that they could never forget. 3-4 million Vietnamese died.  The U.S. soldiers went into villages and just shot everyone (innocent people) while they were looking for the victory. Did Patrick enlist (volunteer) in the war or was he drafted?  Most people were drafted and forced to fight.  Did Patrick believe the United States was right to go in and help the S. Vietnamese people?  Many people here did not.   Sincerely,   Ms. Emma

真诚的, 爱玛老师 *** 3/9/ Dear Ms. Emma, No, I haven’t seen the movie, but I’ve heard people talk about it lots of times. I think a good friendship is better than having a lot of money, but I would have both if I could. No, I don’t think I’ve read any other book by Kate DiCamillo. I’m reading Max, by James Patterson.  Total, the Flock’s talking dog, is very irritated at humans for treating dogs like they do.  But he likes the French C at least most of the restaurants in France allow dogs to eat inside.  I think we should treat animals better. I am reading The Tripods 1: The White Mountains. It is a Science Fiction book about a boy named Will traveling to the White Mountains to hide from the Tripods (Author: John Christopher). The Tripods are big, three legged machines.  Some people think they, came from outer space and enslaved human kind, and some people think they were just thinking machines that the Ancients (People before the Tripods took over) built that rebelled.  It reminded me of the movie series Terminator, where machines built by humans revolted. I am reading The Seal of Solomon, by Rick Yancey.  It is about Alfred Kropp trying to save the world with the Seal of King Solomon.   Sincerely,   Ben ***   3/15/2010 Dear Ben, Your letters are very insightful and reflective.  You have great ideas and you express them at a high level C higher than 5th grader. I absolutely agree with you --- friendship is better than having a lot of money.  Money really doesn’t make you happy, but your friends can.  You only need enough money to meet your needs.  Once your needs are met, more money won’t make you happy. Go to college C go to Clemson C and you will have plenty of $. I read White Mountains when I was in high school because there was very little SF for young people to read.  I didn’t have a teacher making me read SF in 5th grade.  I loved it!  What did Will realize/learn about life? Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的, 爱玛老师 *** 2/23/2010 Dear Ms. Emma, I think there are 121 rules in the contest including players have to wear blue, trackers yellow, and referees black-and-white.  Also there are rules like if you are caught by trackers you have to remain in detention for 72 hours before continuing. Yes, I recognized Paris, Moscow, and all of the countries he went to. I am now reading Maximum Ride: School’s Out - Forever. It is the sequel to The Angel Experiment. In this book Max always thinks of Jeb as a traitor and she hates him.  But I think even though he betrays her and has orders to “retire” her, he actually loves her (I just found out he is her father.) I just finished Maximum Ride: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports. Ari, Max’ Eraser half-brother, first always wanted to kill the flock and capture Max.  But after he toured her around Itex, he didn’t hate Max anymore.  Max didn’t hate him anymore either.  I think they both knew the other person didn’t do what they did on purpose. Sincerely, Ben *** 3/1/2010 Dear Ben, Max has discovered some family secrets.  What do you know about her mother? Why does Max always have to save the world?  Save it from what? How is the School able to track her and the rest of flock? It seems to me that her day is trying to escape the Erasers, trying to keep the Itex Corporation from knowing where she is and trying to keep others from joining the evil side. Am I close? Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的, 爱玛老师 *** 10/13/ Dear Ms. Emma, I already read to the part about when Septimus, Jenna, and Beetle reach The House of Foryx, where All Time Do Meet, also where they hope Nicko and Snorri are.  The way The House of Foryx works, is that anybody who enters it, is in no time at all.  The only way out is when somebody else opens the door from outside.  Then, you go out.  But when you go out you enter the time the person who is opening the door is in.  Septimus, Jenna, and Beetle hope Nicko, and Snorri didn’t go out already, otherwise it would be hard to find them. I like the ending where Marcia Overstrand, the ExtraOrdinary Wizard rescue them from The House of Forys along with Nicko, and Snorri.  Then they go home and Sarah Heap sees Hicko and they’re all very happy. There are other interesting characters too, like Merrin Meredith.  People used to think he was Septimus Heap, but now he was nobody.  Merrin was into Darke Magyk and he stole the two-faced ring from DomDaniel, his old master.  Whoever has this ring will never die.  But even though he is un-destructible, he isn’t brave and is scared of a lot of things. Right now I am reading Snake, by Jeff Stone.  It is about She, Fu, and the other monks joining with some of their parents, including Mong (She’s dad), Sanfu (Fu’s dad), and others, facing Ying and his allies together. Tonglong had betrayed Ying and tricked the Emperor into thinking it was Ying’s fault that Yue, the Emperor’s nephew, died.  His punishment was to be stripped of his army (Tonglong would take his place), and sit in jail until his flesh rots. I think Ying deserves his fate. I am reading The Rescuers, by Allan Zullo.  It is real people in real situations risking their lives to save others. In “The Flood and the Fury”, how Peter saved his family and survived Hurricane Katrina, reminded me of a big earthquake in Si Chuan, China, in .  A small boy had jumped into an already collapsing building and pulled his friends out.  They all survived.  Chinese honored the boy and he appeared in the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympics. I just started The Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty, which is about Patrick in the Vietnam War. Your student, Ben *** 10/26/2009 Dear Ben, Your letter was interesting to read and very informative!  You really explained your thinking! The Rescuers by Allan Zullo sounds like an inspiring book recounting the stories of those who risked their lives for others.  I remember the boy from China and his story.  I did see him honored at the Olympics. Allan Zullo has written many books about unbelievable true stories.  Many of these books are about true ghost stories.  Do you like his style of writing?  How would you describe it?   Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的,   爱玛老师 *** 4/27/2010 Dear Ms. Emma, I think he should have made the book less confusing.  It would have been better if someone, maybe at the end, just told him if the dragons were real or not, instead of first feeling that the dragons were fake, then real, then fake again. I am reading The Underneath, by Kathi Appett.  It is about an evil man named Gar Face and his dog, Ranger, and some cats who befriend Ranger. I don’t get how Gar Face could be so mean.  He never felt any sorrow or regret in his life.  Even rally evil people have those feelings sometimes. I am reading Rules, by Cynthia Lord. What does the OT do?  I don’t’ think it really helps David much.  I feel sorry for Catherine, David embarrasses her a lot.   Sincerely,   Ben *** 5/10/2010 Dear Ben, OT stands for “Occupational Therapist”.  An occupational therapist works with people who have limitations.  Their role is to help others lead a full life by teaching them how to do day-to-day tasks.  Jason’s OT teaches how to communicate and maneuver his wheelchair. She probably also teaches him how to eat, brush his teeth, etc.  She wants him to be as independent as possible.  David’s OT probably teaches him how to look at others when he speaks to them, control his body, deal with loud sounds, have fewer tantrums, etc. David really can’t help the way his brain thinks.  I don’t think Catherine should be embarrassed.  That’s just who he is.  I understand why she is, but I feel for David. Do you think Kristi is a good friend to Catherine? Sincerely, Ms. Emma

*** 10/6/2009 Dear Ms. Emma,   I got The Black Circle at library (I forgot which one. I think it was San Jose Public Library).  My mom had to request it since it wasn’t there yet. I think I was the first person to read that copy of the book.   The Madrigals are the most powerful and most feared branch of Cahills. I wonder why they aren’t shown on the Cahill Coat of Arms.  Everybody fears the Madrigals and tries to steer clear of them, but in Cairo, Egypt, in Beyond the Grave, the Ekat’s stronghold gets robbed by Madrigals.  Dan and Amy also think The Man in black, who has been following them since the beginning, is a Madrigal.  Dan and Amy’s parents died in a fire.   I am reading Monkey, by Jeff Stone, right now.  It is a sequel to Tiger, the first book.  It’s actually the same story, just from different points of view.   In this book, Fu finds out that the drunkard from the village, who had rescued him in the first book, might be his father.  Malao also finds out that Seh looks a lot like Tonglong, and Seh might be Tonglong’s son.   At the end of the book, Tsung and Ying fight each other until Tonglong, Ying’s Number-One-in-Command tells them to stop.  Both Ying and Tsung fall into unconsciousness, and Tonglong seizes his chance to take over Ying’s army.  I think Tonglong is helping the five monks, and he has waited a long time to have an opportunity to take over Ying’s command.   I am now reading Queste, by Angie Sage.  It is about a boy named Septimus Heap who gets sent on a Queste, but tries to find Nicko and Snorri, who were lost in time, hundreds of years ago, instead.   There is a character in the book, Ephaniah Grebe, who gets cursed and is, and will be forever, half-man-half-rat.  It must be very hard for him to live like that.  Especially since he can’t talk, and everybody screams when they see him.     Your Student,   Ben *** 10/13/2009 Dear Ben,   I enjoyed reading your observations of Beyond the Grave and Monkey.  I can tell you think deeply about your books!   I loved hearing how Angie Sage gets her ideas.  It must really help you better understand Queste knowing a little about her and where she grew up.   What is happening with Septimus’ quest to find his brother Nicko?  What is Nicko’s world like?   Angie Sage really gets into her character.  You mentioned the fate of Ephaniah Grebe.  Any other interesting ones?     Sincerely,   Ms. Emma
