examination services frequently asked questionsaddress changes:how do i change my address for receipt of admission ticket or grade slip?
to change your address on our database, e-mail the correct information to please put “address change” in the subject line of your e-mail. include your date of birth and/or your previous address for positive identification. you may notify the exam department directly at (847) 706-3583.
applications:
when is the registration deadline?
your application(s) must be received on or before april 1 for the spring session, and september 24 for the fall session. applications received after the deadline will not be accepted. please be aware that it takes approximately 10 days for your application to arrive by regular mail. we encourage you to use an overnight delivery service to ensure delivery by the deadline date. please retain your tracking number in the event that you would need to trace your package for proof of delivery. your original signature is required for your application to be valid. a photocopy or facsimile of your signature is not acceptable. applications are processed in the order they are received. it may take a few weeks for your application to be processed due to the volume of applications received. when your registration is entered into our computer you will receive an e-mail confirmation.

calculators:
what are the approved calculators and how can i obtain one?
you may use the battery – or solar powered texas instruments ba-35 model calculator, ba ii plus, ba ii plus professional edition, ti-30x, ti-30xa, or ti-30x ii (iis solar or 11b battery). you may use more than one of the approved models during the examination. upon entrance to the examination room, candidates must show the supervisor that the memory has been cleared for all of the calculators brought in. calculator instructions are not allowed in the exam room. for the ba ii plus, clearing will reset the calculator to the factory default settings. you can purchase calculators at any office supply store or directly from: texas instruments, attention: order entry, po box 650311, mail station 3962, dallas, tx 75265. for phone orders please call 1-800-842-2737. the texas instruments web site is
candidate numbers:
i’ve misplaced my candidate number and want to check if i passed, what can i do?
if you have lost or misplaced your ticket of admission indicating your candidate number, this information cannot be given over the phone, faxed or e-mailed. you may request your candidate number by e-mail to please put “candidate number” in the subject line of your e-mail. you may also contact the exam department at (847) 706-3583. please confirm your mailing address and date of birth. candidate numbers are sent by mail only.
change of center:
how do i request a change of center?
you may request a change of center by contacting the exam department at (847) 706-3583. there is a non-refundable fee of $50 which will be assessed at the time of the request. candidates are not allowed to walk-in to take an exam at a center where they have not registered. supervisors must confirm registration with the soa prior to being allowed to write.

refunds:
how do i obtain an examination refund?
if you have registered for but did not sit for an exam, you may request a refund by contacting the exam department at refund@soa.org. you may also mail in the bottom portion of your ticket of admission (indicating which exams need to be refunded). faxed requests may be sent to (847) 706-3599. a $50 administrative fee is assessed on all refunds. the exam department must receive requests no later than june 30 for the spring session and december 31 for the fall session. refunds will be processed approximately 6 weeks after all examinations have been administered for that particular session. refunds will be returned in the payment form that accompanied the original exam application. if your employer paid your exam fee, the employer will receive the refund on your behalf.
signature letter:
i have already received my ticket of admission but have also received a gold signature letter, what should i do?
this notice states that your registration is incomplete because it is either a photocopy, lacking a signature and/or is missing the required statement acknowledging the rules and regulations governing the examinations. it is necessary for the soa to have a completed application with an original signature for our files. please sign and return this notice. if you do not return the form, your exam grade slip will not be released.

to request special accommodations for the soa exams a candidate must submit a written request and medical documentation by the registration deadline.

tickets of admission:
i've already submitted my application. when can i expect an admission ticket?
can i still take the exam if i do not have my ticket of admission?
please allow 10 working days for the application to arrive. applications are processed in the order they are received. it may take a few weeks to enter your application due to the volume of applications being received. tickets of admission will be mailed starting march 1 for the spring session and september 1 for the fall session. if you receive a ticket of admission that contains incorrect information, notify the exam department at (847) 706-3583 or if you have not received or have misplaced your ticket of admission, you must contact the exam department to confirm registration and request that another ticket be sent out to you. in the event that a ticket of admission is not received, the candidate should report to the exam site with photo id to show the supervisor at check in. candidate instructions, exam dates, times and center locations can be found at the supervisor will provide an approved candidate number to use for the exam. candidates are not allowed to walk-in to take an exam at a center where they are not registered – even if they have a ticket of admission from another center.

as part of the soa’s education redesign, more than 150 volunteers have participated in the development of the web-based fundamentals of actuarial practice (fap) course. as the result of these valued contributions, the soa is pleased to announce that fap will be made available to candidates beginning in january 2006.
what is fap?
fap is a self-paced, e-learning course where candidates acquire and use knowledge that is distributed and facilitated by electronic means. this course teaches candidates about the business environment and exposes them to real-world situations before reaching the asa level by using the control cycle as a framework. simply stated, the control cycle is a practical problem-solving framework that an actuary uses to perform work.
fap is a body of knowledge (concepts and problems) in an actuarial context – blending actuarial areas of practice and functional areas. fap includes online and offline readings
and activities, practical examples, case studies, embedded activities, search functions, a glossary, resource library, a discussion forum, end-of-module tests, and end-of-module exercises. the online environment is intended to make the material more engaging and interactive for candidates.
fap also includes two computer-based examinations; one for modules 1-5 and the second for modules 6-8.
who is fap for?
individuals who desire to be admitted as associates of the society of actuaries represent the primary fap target audience. however, the fap course is appropriate for any individual engaged in the actuarial profession at some level.
what are the prerequisites?
candidates starting fap may have passed one or more of the preliminary education examinations (p, fm, m, c), but this is not a requirement. we expect however, that many candidates will have passed the four preliminary education exams prior to b
eginning fap module 5.
what are the fap modules?
fap is comprised of eight modules:
module 1: role of the professional actuary
module 2: external forces
module 3: risk in actuarial problems
module 4: actuarial solutions
module 5: actuarial models
module 6: model selection and solution design
module 7: selection of initial assumptions
module 8: monitoring results and completing the control cycle
candidates will complete the modules in sequence, as content in later modules builds upon the content of earlier modules.
when will the modules be available?
module 1 will be made available to registered candidates on january 31, 2006. implementation of the remaining modules and administration of the two examinations is planned as follows:

一、考试介绍:
“中国精算师”资格考试分为准精算师和精算师两部分。准精算师部分考试共九门必考课程,考生通过全部九门课程考试后,将获得准精算师资格。精算师考试课程共10门,其中3门必考课程,2门选考课程,考生必须通过3门必考课程、2门选考课程的考试。3门必考课程内容主要涉及保险公司运营管理、财务、投资以及中国保险业法规、税收、财务制度等。2门选考课程则为保险业务的不同方向。二、报名条件:凡具有大学本科以上学历或同等学历的个人,包括大学本科在校生均可报名参加中国精算师资格考试。但属于下述情形之一者,不得参加中国精算师资格考试(一)曾受过刑事处罚;(二)曾因违反金融法规而受过行政处罚;(三)无国籍;(四)中国保监会认定为不符合参加中国精算师资格考试条件的其他情形。三、考试科目及考试内容:自开始中国精算资格考试每年开考两次,分别于每年春季、秋季举办。春季考试开考中国精算师资格考试准精算师部分01~09科目及精算师高级科目011、012。秋季考试开考中国精算师资格考试准精算师部分01~09科目、精算师高级科目013、015、017、020及非寿险部分科目06g、08g。(注:准精算师部分每年开考两次,高级科目每年只开考一次。)

if i have 15 or more professional development (pd) units acquired through conversion, can these credits be applied to meet the requirement to complete a project?
yes, but candidates with an interest in completing a project are encouraged to do so. they would then earn an additional 15 units for the project.
if i take 15 units before submitting my plan, are they at risk if my plan is disapproved?candidates may want to discuss their approach to pd, including the educational objectives they wish to fulfil, with their advisors before starting to attend formal programs for pd credit. there is a time limit on such programs, in that a program is valid for a period of 25 months and could expire before the plan is completed if there is a delay in obtaining approval.
the credits taken must relate directly to the candidate’s legitimate educational objectives for the plan. if the program(s) used provides concrete support to the plan, there should be little risk of credits not being accepted.
what might cause a plan to be disapproved?there are various reasons - a lack of integration or cohesion among the plan elements (e.g. covering multiple practice areas), a superficial approach to extending the candidate’s expertise, or lack of relevance of the programs cited to the objectives for the plan. in general, there should be little risk if the candidate and advisor approach the process by first establishing educational objectives and then determining appropriate programs to support those objectives.
are there forms to submit with my initial plan and/or executed plan report?initially, the letter of commitment and the pd plan, both signed by the advisor and the candidate, must be submitted along with the pd filing fee and payment form. the letter of commitment and payment form may be obtained from the soa web site or the soa's basic education catalog.
model plans have been developed and are available on the web site. candidates filing model plans will still be required to file a copy of the signed model plan and letter of commitment; and will also need to submit the filing fee and payment form. candidates may use the model plans exactly as written or as a framework for their plans, and adapt the plans to meet their individual pd needs.
upon completion of a pd plan, the candidate and advisor will submit to the soa a final executed plan, a final report attesting to the successful completion of the plan and fulfillment of the educational objectives, and the executed plan review checklist signed by the candidate and advisor. the advisor and candidate must sign-off on the executed plan and report. because the plan is unique to each candidate, we believe the attestation of a completed plan should also be unique and therefore we do not envision drafting a standardized form. the attestation should also include a written report on the project and written summaries on each program attended explaining how each program helped to attain the educational objectives of the plan and how the candidate may put to use the knowledge gained. program content information and handouts are required for any non-approved programs. see also tips for submitting your pd plan documents.

另据了解,目前在我国,精算师考试有中国精算师考试、北美精算师协会的精算师资格考试、英国精算师考试和日本精算师考试4个系列。前不久,中国保监会下发《关于精算责任人任职资格有关要求的通知》,规定“具有北美精算师协会、英国精算师协会、澳大利亚精算协会或法国精算学会正式会员资格,有3年以上精算从业经验,熟悉我国有关精算规定人员,经中国保监会特别批准,可以担任精算责任人,任期1年,到期后需重新申请。
