趣味习语 太奇葩!生活常见八大习语
You’re talking to your native English-speaking friend about your recent breakup and how depressed you are when suddenly he turns toward you and says “Don’t worry about it man, girls like that are a dime a dozen!” You then stare at your friend in confusion. You simply don’t understand why your good friend is comparing the girl that was once the love of your life to $1.20.
某天,你跟一个老外朋友说起自己刚跟女友分手,现在很难过。就在此时,对方突然拍了拍你的肩膀对你说:“Don't worry about it man, girls like that are a dime a dozen!”你不解的盯着对方。你很难理解老外怎么会把你曾经深爱的女友说成只值一块二毛钱!
Actually “a dime a dozen” doesn’t mean anything even remotely close to what the individual words in the phrase implies. For native speakers of English, a dime a dozen simply means that something is common and easy to obtain. Because we cannot figure out the meaning by examining the phrase alone, “dime a dozen” is what we call an idiom. As a non-native speaker of English, the best way to understand idioms is to memorize their meanings from the standpoint of a native speaker. We’ve listed the 10 most common idioms in English and their actual meanings.
其实,“a dime a dozen”跟“一块二毛钱”没有半点关系。对于母语为英文的人来说,它指的是某事物多的很不值钱,想要得到它也不是很难(天涯何处无芳草)。由于单看字面意思我们很难明白其中的真正含义,”a dime a dozen”其实就是一句习语(和中文的成语一样),作为非英语母语人士,想要记住习语最好的办法就是站在native speaker的角度来理解记忆习语。下面我们就一起来看看英文中最常用、最有趣的几个习语:
1. A Piece of cake 小菜一碟
No, when someone says that the assignment they just finished was a piece of cake, it does not mean that their professor gave them a red velvet cupcake for their midterm paper, what a piece of cake actually means is that something is very easy to complete.
不,当某人说他们刚刚完成的任务就像一块蛋糕,那么它并不是说教授因为他们的期中考试成绩奖励他们一份红丝绒蛋糕,“a piece of cake”实际是指某事很简单很容易完成。
2. Costs an arm and a leg 花了我一大笔钱
It would be a strange world we lived in if buying that fancy shiny purse literally required us to chop off our body parts to give as tribute to the Louis Vuitton gods. When something costs an arm and a leg it actually means that something is very expensive.
如果为了买我们心爱的闪亮的包包,比如LV,却要让我们砍掉手脚以示敬意,那这个世界未免太奇葩了吧。当某物花掉你的胳膊和腿时,它实际是指这个东西超级贵。
3. Break a leg 祝你好运
Oh, look, another idiom about legs. You’re about to take your dreaded calculus final and before you head into your classroom your roommate texts you, “Break a Leg!” Why, you think in your head, would he ever wish that upon me? I thought we were cool with each other. Well, your roommate surely doesn’t want your bones to break while walking to your seat in the exam room that’s for sure. Break a leg actually means good luck!
哦,快看,又一个与腿有关的习语。你马上要参加你最害怕的微积分期末考试了,在你进入考场教室前你的室友给你发来了一条短信:”Break a Leg!” 什么,你在脑中暗暗的想,难道他希望我断胳膊断腿?我一直以为我们关系很好呢。那么,事实上你的室友并不是希望你在走入考场位置时摔断骨头,这是肯定的。Break a leg实际上就是“祝你好运”的意思!
4. Hit the books 用功读书
If you’re a student in an English speaking environment you’re probably going to be hearing this phrase a lot. Before you imagine students running into their campus library and punching, kicking and wrestling apart the complete works of Shakespeare, we would just like to say that hit the books actually means to study. There there, you can still punch books in your spare time if you want, we won’t judge you.
如果你是一个生活在英语环境下的学生,你肯定会经常听到这句话。当你脑子里在歪歪各种学生冲进校园图书馆拳打脚踢撕扯莎士比亚著作的画面时,我要告诉你hit the books实际上指的是去学习(用功)。当然当然,如果你想,你还是可以在闲暇时间猛捶你的书,我们不做评论。
5. Hit the nail on the head 恰到好处,一针见血
This idiom has to do with doing or saying something that is precisely right. If you don’t understand this, just think about that sweet feeling you get when you swing a hammer at a nail and hit it perfectly.
这个习语表示做某事或说某事恰到好处。如果你还是不懂,那么就想象一下当你挥舞着铁锤恰到好处地正中要害,一锤定音,那种感觉有多美妙。
6. You can’t judge a book by its cover 不要以貌取人
How many awesome books do you think you’ve never read in your life just because the cover did not catch your eye? This idiom does not only apply to books however, but can be used for everything in general. Essentially it means that you should not decide upon something based just on outward appearances.
你能想象下仅仅由于封面不够吸引眼球,你错失了多少本好书吗?这个习语不仅仅适用于书,还可以广泛的应用于很多场合。总体而言,它是指不要光从事物的表面现象来做决定。
7. Bite off more than you can chew 贪多嚼不烂,自不量力
Imagine your waiter brings you the biggest juiciest hamburger from your favorite American restaurant. In your hunger, you grab it quickly and take a giant bite out of it. Unfortunately, the bite you’ve taken is too big, and you end up looking like an idiot trying to shove this bite down your throat while drinking water and trying not to choke. That is the most literal sense of the meaning, but in general it just means to attempt to take on a task that is too much for you to handle.
想象一下在你最喜欢的美国餐厅,服务员为你带来最大最美味的汉堡包。饥肠辘辘的你,抓起汉堡狠狠地咬了一大口。很不幸,你咬的这一口太大了,以至于你最终的结局是一边想要艰难努力的咽下这一大口食物,一边又喝水以防呛到自己,场面是不是像个白痴一样很傻很可笑。
8. Scratch someone’s back 投之以桃,报之以李
We all know how difficult it is to scratch that itch on your back that your hand just aren’t flexible enough to reach, so why would you want to scratch some random person’s smelly back? Because if you do, they may eventually be willing to scratch your own smelly back when you need it! What this idiom means is to help someone out with the assumption that they will return the favor in the future!
我们都知道想要给后背挠痒是件很麻烦的事,因为手臂没有那么灵活,那么你为什么还要偶尔给别人的后背挠痒呢?答案是,如果今天你帮了别人,那么某一天也会有人愿意帮你的后背挠痒!这句习语的意思就是预支自己对他人的帮忙,以防日后自己不时之需时可以有人情债可收。

篇3:常见的美国习语
美国习语:寻欢作乐
美国有一个俗语就是建筑在这一形象之上的。这个俗语就是:to kick up one's heels。To kick up one's heels,从字面上来解释就是:把后脚往上踢。但是,实际上to kick up one's heels是用来形容人们到外面去寻欢作乐,就像马在草原上奔跑一样。比如说,有两个人在办公室里说话,其中之一说:
例句-1: “How about coming out with us Wednesday night? We're all going to take Bill Glover out to dinner. Then later we'll drop into a few night spots. It's Bill's last chance to kick up his heels, you know--he's getting married the next morning.”
这人说:“星期三晚上跟我们一起出去玩,怎么样?我们大家一起请比尔格洛弗出去吃晚饭。然后,我们再到几个像.样的地方去玩。这是比尔到外面去寻欢作乐的最后一次机会了,你知道,他第二天上午就要结婚了。”
To kick up one's heels并不一定是年轻人的事,上了年纪的人有时也想到外面去轻松轻松。下面的例子就很能说明问题:
例句-2: “My mother and dad are over sixty, but they still like to go out once in a while to have dinner and do a little dancing and kick up their heels. Of course, they go home a lot earlier than they used to.”
这个人说:“我的爸爸和妈妈已经六十多了,但是他们有时还是喜欢到外面去吃晚饭、跳跳舞,高兴高兴。当然罗,他们现在回家的时间要比以前早多了。”
下面我们还要给大家介绍一个和kick这个字有关的美国俗语。这个俗语是:to kick off。To kick off的意思是一项活动,或一个计划的开始。To kick off原来是用在足球比赛的。每次比赛开始都是由一个球队把球踢到对方球队去。可是现在这个俗语几乎可以用在任何方面,意思是:开始。美国人经常用to kick off来表示竞选活动的开始。有时,你可以从电台上听到这样的报道:
例句-3: “Last night Michael Smith kicked off his campaign for the U.S. Senate with a speech here promising lower taxes and a bigger budget for schools and more help to the farmers.”
这则消息说:“昨晚,迈克尔斯密斯在这儿发表讲话,作为他竞选美国参议员竞选活动的开始。他在讲话中向选民们保证降低税收,增加学校经费,并给予农民更多的帮助。”
下面这个例子是学生在准备他的暑期活动。他说:
例句-4: “Now that my exams are all finished, I'm going to kick off the summer vacation by going down to Ocean City for a week to get some sun, some surf and a chance to look at the girls.”
这个学生说:“现在考试已经全部结束,我要先到欧欣城去玩一个星期,去晒晒太阳,在海上玩冲浪,还可以看看那里的姑娘们。这就作为我暑假的开始。”
我们现在来复习一下今天讲的两个美国人经常用的俗语。第一个是:to kick up one's heels。To kick up one's heels是指到外面去寻欢作乐,高兴高兴。我们今天讲的第二个俗语是:to kick off。To kick off是指开始一项活动,或一个计划。
美国习语:剩饭打包带走
例句-1:“Waiter, could you please wrap up the rest of this steak for me ? I'd like to take it home for my dog.”
2:“We had so much food left over from dinner at the China garden last night that we took enough home in doggy bags to feed the whole family tonight.”
Sunny side up.
Sunny side的意思是太阳的那一面,sunny side up也就是蛋黄向上的意思。要是放在整个句子里的话就是:
例句-3:“I would like to have my eggs sunny side up.”
要是你愿意要荷包蛋两面都煎一下的,那你就说你要:Over easy.也就是把鸡蛋反过来也煎一下的意思。比如说,有两个人在饭馆里吃早饭,各人要的荷包蛋不一样:
例句-4:M: “Miss, I'd like two fried eggs sunny side up and the sausage on the side.”
F: “Not me. I don't like to see my eggs staring up at me with big yellow eyes. Miss, two fried eggs, over easy and not fried too hard.”
那位先生说:“小姐,我要两个荷包蛋,只要煎一面。另外再加一点香肠。”
而那位女顾客说:“我可不要,我不喜欢两个大蛋黄像眼睛那样瞪着我。小姐,我要鸡蛋两面都煎一下,但不要太老。”
今天我们一共讲了三个有关吃东西的习惯用语:
第一个是doggy bag。 doggy bag是指人们把在饭馆里吃剩下来的饭菜装在里面带回家的口袋。第二个是sunny side up。
例句-1 : “Say, Barby, let me tell you something. I really get a kick out of being around you. If you feel the same way about me, maybe we ought to get serious and think about getting engaged to each other.”
这个年轻人说:“咳,芭比,我有些想法要告诉你。和你在一起真使我感到非常愉快。要是你对我也有同样的感觉的话,那我们得认真对待我们的关系,考虑我们是否应该订婚了。”
但是,爱情并不是to get a kick out of的源泉。也就是说,to get a kick out of这个俗语并不完全和爱情联系在一起。它可以用于任何一个使你高兴的人,或任何一样令你喜爱和激动的东西。例如:一个成年人在说他自己的爱好:
例句-2: “I'm not a kid anymore but I still get a big kick out of going to see a circus. The elephants, the clowns, the acrobats--they make me feel like a kid again.”
1: “My wife's eyes popped out when she saw the necklace I bought her for our twentieth wedding anniversary.”
这个人说:“在我们庆祝结婚二十周年时,我给我的妻子买了一条项链。当她看到那条项链时,她眼睛睁得可大了。”
大家可能都知道,美国的离婚率是很高的,正因为如此,人们对结婚周年是很重视的,特别是逢十的结婚周年,如二十周年、三十周年等,一般当事人都要举行盛大庆祝活动。
Have your eyes popped out还可以用在其他场合,下面就是一个例子:
例句-2: “I hadn't seen my niece since she was a child, so when she visited town the other day my eyes popped out -- she's grown into a very beautiful young woman.”
这个人说:“我还是在我侄女是个孩子的时候见过她。自从那时起,我一直就没有机会见到她。因此,那天她突然来这儿访问使我感到十分惊奇。她已经长大,变成一个很漂亮的年轻少女了。”
有的人不管发生什么大事,似乎从来也不会感到惊奇,他们总能保持镇静,连眼睛都不眨一下,这在英文里就是:Not even bat an eye。Bat这个字的一个解释是眨眼睛。可是,在这种情况下,它经常是以否定的形式出现的。举一个例子就更能说明这个问题了:
例句-3: “Bill didn't even bat an eye when they told him he had just won the lottery. He just shrugged and said, 'Well, I guess I can use the money.'”
这句话的意思是:“当比尔听到他中了头奖的时候,他连眼睛都没有眨一下,只是耸耸肩膀说:“行,我想这些钱是会有用的。”
中了头奖不表现激动,这已经很不容易了。要是一个人在赌钱的时候输了钱,还要保持镇静的话那就更不容易了,可是比尔就能做到。请你们听一听和他一起赌钱的人是怎么说的:
例句-4: “Bill lost five thousand dollars on this one poker hand, but he didn't even bat an eye--he just shrugged and said, 'Easy come, easy go. Come on and deal the next hand!'”
这个人说:“比尔在仅仅打一付扑克牌游戏的过程中就输了五千美元。可是他眼睛都没眨一下。他只是耸耸肩说:“来得容易,去得容易。快,发牌吧。”
以上我们给大家介绍了两个由eyes这个字组成的习惯用语。第一个是eyes pop out。Eyes pop out是指当一个人在感到很惊奇的时候,眼睛睁的大大的。我们今天讲的另一个和eyes有关的俗语是not even bat an eye。Not even bat an eye是眼睛都不眨一下的意思。
美国习语:毫不保留
第一个是:to pull no punches。 To pull no punches,这是指毫不保留地告诉别人你的看法。Punch 这个字的一种解释就是拳击。 To pull no punches 这个俗语使人脑子里顿时出现一个拳击场里两个拳击手扭成一团,互相攻打对方,而对方设法回避的形象。但是 to pull no punches 这个俗语并不是用在拳击方面的。下面的例子说明在日常生活中怎么用这个俗语:
例句-1: “When I saw my brother Joe, I didn't pull any punches -- I told him to stop drinking and go out and find a job.”
这句话翻成中文的意思是:“当我见到我哥哥乔的时候,我毫不保留地对他说,不要再喝酒了,还是出去找个工作吧。”
人们要想毫无保留地对对方讲心里话的时候往往会很犹豫,怕伤害别人。但是,在有的情况下,你绝不会犹豫,就像下面这个例子里的这个人:
例句-2: “I pulled no punches when I went to see the auto dealer who sold me such a lousy car. I told him he ought to be ashamed to charge so much for a car that had so many things wrong with it. No, he didn't give me my money back, but I sure felt better afterwards.”
这个人说:“那个汽车商卖给我的这辆汽车毛病太多了。我去看他的时候毫不客气地对他说,卖这么次的车给我还收我那么多的钱,你自己应该感到害臊。虽然他并没有把钱还给我,可是,说了这些话我感到痛快多了。”
今天我们要讲的另外一个俗语是:straight from the horse's mouth。 Straight from the horse's mouth,从字面上来解释它的意思是:直接来自马的嘴巴。可是,这个俗语的真正意思是:你听到的消息是真实的,因为这消息来自可靠的来源。马和消息可靠又有什么关系呢?你要知道,远在人们还没有使用汽车的年代,人们是依靠马作为他们主要的交通工具,认为马是十分可靠的。现在,汽车已经早就代替了马,但是这个俗语仍然被广为使用。现在我们来举个例子:
例句-3: “I tell you I know for certain that Lisa will be promoted to manager. The boss told me himself, so it's straight from the horse's mouth!”
这个人说:“告诉你,我知道莉沙肯定会被提升为经理的。这是老板亲口告诉我的,这个消息是绝对可靠的!”
我们再来举个例子:
例句-4: “Say, did you hear that Sally and Bob are going to get married. Honest, I'm not joking. I heard it from Bob himself, so it's straight from the horse's mouth!”
