Dear _,

My mother was diagnosed with cancer. It all started in April of my sophomore year when she complained of exhaustion, nausea, a back ache, and bad breath. I remember the day perfectly. It was Easter morning and my mom was scheduled for a procedure to examine what was predicted to be a blockage in her bile duct; it was also the Easter we found out that it wasn’t a blockage or build up, but rather a tumor. A tumor that would require four surgeries, three months in intensive care, and the rearranging of her whole digestive system. But out of those one hundred and twenty two days spent in ICU alone, the moment that sticks out in my mind was the day I walked in and no longer saw my mother.

The woman that was in front of me in no way physically, mentally, or emotionally resembled the strong female figure that raised me. Her once fiery red hair was now dulled. Her porcelain white skin looked grayish. I was scared to hug her or even touch her because her once sturdy body now looked so breakable. They barely fed her. All they gave her to eat were ice chips. The moment I walked in ready to tell her about my day at school, I could hear her begging, pleading for more ice chips. She had already sneaked in more than she should have, and when she thought no one was looking, she would drink the forbidden water that would melt into the bottom of the bowl. In that instance, a bitter sweet feeling overcame me: that was the woman I knew and loved; she saw what she wanted and went after it. That feeling soon disappeared. I heard her scream out in agony “It hurts, don’t do that, it hurts“ as the nurses pierced her skin with a pain reliever. I''ve always disliked injections, but that made me loathe them. When it became too much to bear, my father ushered me out of the room.

That was the day of her first emergency surgery, and the day she almost didn’t come back alive. I remember feeling so helpless, as if I was a child again. I had to keep reminding myself that I wasn’t a child. My mother had raised me to become an intelligent, mature, and brave young woman. In that moment, I would have to act as the person my mother raised me to be; a person my mother would be proud of. In this difficult time, I learned a lot about myself. I learned I possessed as inner strength. I learned to be patient, and to ignore all the petty dilemmas I once deemed life altering. I learned how to deal with fear, frustration, injections, and surgeries. But most importantly, in seeing my mother''s fierce bravery and independence, I learned that I was very much like her.

Yours sincerely,

”All I know about leadership I learned from . . .“ What items could a person use to describe leadership qualities?

Inspired by the student council advisors at my high school.

Student council was a big part of my life in high school. I have participated in it since my frst year of high school. When I frst joined, I was quiet, na?ve, and unwilling to participate in many activities. I was scared to meet new people and afraid to apply myself. This all began to change. Half way through my frst year in student council, one of the advisors can up to me and asked why I did not participate that much. I did not have an answer for her and did not know how to respond. After this, I began to think of an answer. I became frustrated and decided to change. I started to show up at events and had a great time. I realized I loved this and wanted to start leading these activities. In my sophomore, junior, and now my senior year of high school, I asserted myself and took on a strong leadership role in student council. I did not fgure out the answer to why I was so reserved until this year with the help of this question.

When I looked up leadership in the dictionary, it said that it was the capacity to lead and the act or instance of leading. These are two very broad defnitions of leadership. Many people have different notions of what this word actually means. When I was challenged to use different items to describe what leadership actually is, I thought this was going to be a hard and obnoxious task. What could I learn from comparing leadership to a stuffed animal or a rubber chicken? But when I sat down to come up with a couple of answers, I realized that leadership could be compared to almost anything a person wants.

All I know about leadership I learned from a calculator. A calculator can add everything together to come up with the best answer. It can delet e what is unnecessary and only include what is important. It can solve any type of problem. These are all important equalities a leader has to have. A leader has to be able to add all of the ideas together to make the best possible plan. Leaders have to know how to decipher the good and the bad out of an idea. They have to be versatile and know how to deal with different types of issues.

All I know about leadership I learned from a ball. A ball is able to bounce back up after it is dropped. It is round and has no creases. A ball can be thrown back and forth to different people. All of these qualities are also leadership qualities. A leader has to be ready for every situation that is thrown at him or her. He or she has to be able to bounce back from any setbacks and never dwell on the past. Leaders have to exhibit many qualities and never be closed-minded about a situation. A leader must be able to delegate when he or she cannot get the work done. They have to trust everyone they lead to be able to ”catch the ball“ and keep a project rolling.

This activity made me realize that being a leader is so much more than just having authority and having the ability to take control of a situation. A leader has to be trusting of all the people he or she leads and, leaders must be able to combine ideas into one encompassing idea. They cannot sit in the background and watch events happen; they have to jump in and be involved. They should not delegate all their responsibilities away.

Leadership is more than what the dictionary says it is.

I learned through all of this that I have many of these qualities.

I have the ability to solve problems, lead through adversity, and be versatile. From answering this question, I realized that I could lead effectively, even if my leadership style is different from other individuals. When I joined student council in my frst year of high school, I did not have these qualities because I was never put into a situation where I had to lead. I was too reserved to try. When I tried, I learned that I could succeed in this. I did not realize until I answered this question about leadership. I was never able to see that being a leader is not just about taking control of a group and telling everyone what to do.www.liuxue.la When I was a freshman, I thought leadership was this. I did not know that did not have to be forceful and strict. I stereotyped a leader then. Thisis where I went wrong. A leader is about being yourself and never letting anyone change you. I thought I had to change to be a good leaderOnly when I expanded my comfort zone did I realize this was not trueIt only took three years and a silly question/game to fgure this out.

Dear ,

A Master’s student of accounting at Xiamen University, the besthigher-learning institution in China’s strategically important Province ofFujian, across the Straits from Taiwan, I would like to pursue Ph. D. studies inyour distinguished program so that I can be assured a teaching career in mymotherland.

My education so far is characterized by indisputable excellence. During thefour years of my undergraduate studies, my GPA was consistently the highest inmy class of 135 students. As you can see from the transcripts of my academicrecord, I received straight A’s for all the courses except for first-yearPhysical Education. My graduation was rated “Outstanding”, the highest ratingpossible. An in-depth analysis of the ethical standards of Chinese auditors, thepaper was later published in a quality professional journal as a seminal studyof a rarely studied topic in China. As the unquestionably best student in myyear, I was accepted into graduate studies by the university without thenormally mandatory entrance examinations.

In recognition of my academic performance and other strengths, I wasdecorated with many honors and accolades during my undergraduate studies. I waselected the monitor of the class and the Vice President of the university’sStudent Union, making me the most important female student leader on campus.Among the financial awards I won was the Jiageng Scholarship, the university’smost prestigious award named after its founder Chen Jiageng, one of the bestknown patriotic Chinese in the first half of this century. The Jiageng/scholarship is offered to only ten students each year, and the offer is usuallypresented to the recipients by the university’s president in person in a grandceremony, as it was in , when I got it.

In my undergraduate studies, I had broad academic interests, although Imajored in accounting. I regularly read academic journals, both Chinese andinternational, to keep me abreast of the latest developments in accounting andother related fields. I devoted considerable time to learning such subjects aslaw and economics. My extensive knowledge provided me solid grounding as Inarrowed down my research interest to professional ethics of accountants. In acountry that has only an inchoate legal regime governing professional practice.Enforcing high ethical standards is both difficult and critical. But studieshave been scant and haphazard so far. I am glad that I have made quite somecontribution to the country’s discourse in this area.

Dear XX,

In capacity as Professor of Mathematics at Fudan University I'm writing torecommend Mr.Wang Gesintosyour PhD program in Computer Science.I have knownMr.Wang since his sophomore year of college and have acted as his thesisadvisor and mentor. In my experience he is a gifted and diligent student and anadmirably hard worker.

Wang is an impressive student because he has been forced to overcome thesignificant challenge of a serious illness during his freshman year. When Ifirst met Wang in my Discrete Math class he did not appear to be anythingspecial to me.While his exam scores were good they were not as high as I wouldnow expect of him. What I didn't know then was that due to his illness Wang wasattempting to take all of the difficult early mathematics courses at one timeincluding Discrete Mathematics Advanced Mathematics Linear Algebra andPossibilities. While most students found preparing for just one set of theseexams difficult Wang was overwhelmed by four of them. But in the end he achievedan impressive score on the final exam which made me conscious of his unusualdetermination he demonstrates when confronting difficult challenges.

Mr.Wang and I have often talked about a variety of mathematics andcomputer science concepts and problems.During these discussions I always foundhim to be delightfully intelligent. Not only does he quickly understand theconcepts and problems presented to him he is able to analyze these problems andpresent solutions. But perhaps most important is that Wang's thinking isintensely rigorous. When looking at any question he carefully scrutinizes it andif he finds any uncertain issues he clears them up immediately.I believe thiskind of thought is essential to become an excellent computer programmer.

Serving as his thesis advisor I had a first-hand opportunity to observe theway in which Wang's mind works. In his senor thesis Mr.Wang mainly discussedtwo challenging questions in regards to″ANN″.In our books in China knowledge ofANN and its uses are very rare.Few people in China have studied this topic andconsequently the materials that are available on ANN are limited.Working onthis difficult project not only did Mr.Wang rise to the challenge but he wentabove and beyond the call of duty to analyze his secondary sources and test themfor accuracy in practice. In this way he found mistakes in the book that we use.His diligence and hard work made me extremely proud of him.

Mr.Wang is an intelligent motivated and industrious individual.Teachingand advising him has been a delightful pleasure.I know that if given the chanceto study abroad in America he will arm himself to become a great programmer hedreams of being. He has the intelligence and background to achieve these goals -now all he needs is the opportunity.I ask that you look upon his applicationfavorably and grant him a chance to study in your university.

Dear _,

The world is forever growing and evolving, as is the demand for new buildings and good infrastructure. The pressures of population growth and global warming are ever increasing, and civil engineers can help play a major role in designing more efficient structures, as well as planning projects in developing countries. I am attracted to me to civil engineering because I like the idea of helping to shape the world around me to meet the demands of the future. I hope for a challenging career which I will find personally rewarding and be able to feel that I have given something back to the community.

Academically, science has always been my main interest and is the area in which I am most able. I enjoyed biology, in particular learning about human impact on the environment. However, during my A levels I realised that my interests lay deeper in maths and physics. I enjoyed the problem solving involved within my subjects and the way a real life situation could be expressed and manipulated mathematically. What I found particularly interesting was relating what had been learnt in the classroom to real life situations, which is what gave me more interest in civil engineering - the appeal of a challenging career where I would have the opportunity to theoretically solve problems and practically apply solutions to have a beneficial effect on the world around me.

During my gap year I have had several work experience placements in various skilled trades such as building and joinery. Through joinery I gained an appreciation of the need for accurate design and construction, as well as a knowledge of the uses of wood as a building material. Though much of the building work I have undertaken was in construction, I found it to be invaluable experience. For example, whilst helping to build a garage I learnt about the importance of good design and planning by having to interpret the designs in order to determine how many bricks would be needed. During its constuction I noticed how important it was to build accurately, particually at the corners of the building which supported most of the weight of the roof. I also discovered the importance of keeping costs low, but the quality of work high. We made a different type of cement which was cheaper and weaker, but still met the needs for the inner walls. The most rewarding part of this experience seeing the project through from a plan on paper to its completion, and the feeling of satisfaction once it was completely built.

I have a passionate interest in music and have been playing guitar for about 5 years. I have enjoyed my time as a member of a band, which has helped me to work creatively as part of a team. More recently, I have also achieved grade 2 in jazz piano. For years I have had a great enthusiasm for skateboarding and in November began undertaking voluntary work with a group helping to plan and design a skateboarding facility in Kings Heath park. We were involved in preparatory work such as gaining public support and undertaking research at existing facilities across the UK, as well as its design. From this experience I learnt the importance of working as part of a team and meeting deadlines. Also, I gained an understanding of just how much preparation and organisation is needed, even for a small development.

By studying civil engineering at university I hope to build on my knowledge of maths and physics and learn how to apply it to real life situations. Having enjoyed my time at school I am excited by the prospect of going to university and learning more about our world around us. I hope for both a challenging and diverse career where I can help to improve the world for future generations to come.

Yours sincerely,

xuexila

A graduate from a management program who has worked in sales and promotion for four years, I now would like to pick up my academic career as an economist. By so doing, I hope that I can eventually play a leadership role in China’s ongoing economic reforms.

I did my undergraduate studies at the Beijing-based Northern University, one of the country’s top institutions of higher learning. I entered into this university in 1990 on the strength of my performance in the National University Entrance Examinations, held once every year to screen high school graduates for post-secondary education. My scores in these exams were so great that they constituted the highest total in my county, which made me something of a celebrity in my whole province.

With my education at the Northern, I was solidly grounded in the fundamentals. Studying industriously, I had an overall GPA of 3.3, the fifth highest in our department. My GPA in the courses of my major was even higher, standing at 3.7. I was granted the “Excellent Studies Prize” in 1991 and the “Outstanding Undergraduate Student Scholarship” by the Dept. Of Management in 1992 and 1993.

I did not limit myself to academic studies at the university. Campus life was colorful, an I made full use of all the opportunities to enrich myself. As a freshman, I worked for the Information Department of the university’s Student Union. My performance was such that I was appointed the head of the department for a term of two years between 1991 and 1993. The position gave me a platform from which I founded two periodicals, the “Management Brief” and the “Future Entrepreneur”. In these periodicals, I wrote profusely about topics relating to the economic reforms and general business management. To fund these publications, I led a group of students in offering computer training programs to the unskilled, which was unique on our campus then. All this not only enriched my student life but also helped me to improve my ability in many ways. One of the benefits is that I became an effective writer. In a 1992 composition contest, I was awarded the first-class prize for my essay.

Thanks to my reputation as both a distinguished student and a student organizer, I was offered a job at the university in 1994 after obtaining my bachelor’s degree. I first worked at the Sales Department, responsible for product sales and advertisements. Now , I am the director’s assistant, responsible for wage management, bonus management, drafting regulation and so on. Four years of working experience has taught me how to put textbook skills and knowledge into practice. All the while, I have been improving my academic qualifications. I now wish to study abroad to further my academic career.

Knowing that computers are essential for doing sophisticated research, I made special efforts in mastering computer technologies. I trained myself in a host of programming languages, including the BASIC, Pascal and FoxBASE. Using my programming skills, I have designed a “Personnel Management Information System” and a “Sales Management Information System”, which have markedly improved efficiency in my office. Building on the computer skills I learned as a student, I have in recent years made myself versed in FoxPro, Access, and Visual Basic. Mow I am planning to design a comprehensive management system for my institute to improve management efficiency.

Taking part in various academic activities to hone my ability to do research is an indispensable part of my strategy to improve myself. In the past four years, I have taken part in a number of research projects, including the “External Economics for Research and Technology (R&E) Development” project at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the “International Business Management Bibliography” at the Tsinghua University and the “Washing Machine and Refrigerator Market Research” project for the International Consulting Ltd. The more I take part in these activities, the more I feel I need to study further.

My interest in economics was first ignited in my undergraduate years, when I was listening to a lecture “Planned Economy ad Market Economy” by the preeminent Chinese economist Li Yining ,a professor of the Beijing University, a few blocks away from my university. The thinking he displayed in that lecture on the Chinese economy was so sharp and intriguing that I have focused my academic interest on economics ever since. To pursue my this interest, I took a number of economics-related courses, such as Political Economics, Industrial Economics, Technological Economics, Management Economics, Economic Law, Marketing and Market Research Finance. I also took the care to train myself in mathematics fundamentals, such as Liner Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Industrial Statistics. Books like “Western Economics” and “Comparative Economics” have been my favorite reading materials. By taking these courses, I learned new economic concepts and theories, and thus broadened my perspectives and sharpened my insights.

New perspectives and insights are what China needs as it continues its reforms and modernization drive. Unlike developed countries in the West, which have practiced market economics for several hundred years, Chin has been trying to adopt market principles for only twenty years. The problems waiting to be solved are so many and so complex that even the bravest of the brightest can feel daunted. As the country tries to restructure and rejuvenate its larger, state-owned enterprises, a host of challenges, not the least of which are financial crisis, unemployment, inflation and so on, are rattling the nation. Nobody seems to be sure what China will face a few years down the road. Can China keep growing? Or will it suffer irreversible setbacks? On top its domestic problems, how will China cope with the international competition?

To help answer these questions, I need to further refine my expertise in economics. I hope to become one of the country’s own economists armed with a sophisticated understanding of both the complex reality in China and the general market principles and theories that apply throughout the world, like it or mot. Your institution, with a highly qualified faculty, is the university I have long admired. I am confident that, under your seasoned guidance, I can give full play to my potential and realize my career goal.

外国学生从一开始就可以办理求学期间的多次往返签证,不再需要入境一次申请一次;取消外国学生经过申请许可才能打工的规定,允许他们在学习期间兼职以及在假期里做全职工作;签证半年以上的留学生配偶可以赴英国陪读或工作;凡是申请超过半年以上留学签证的学生,英国政府给予免费的医疗保险;

Dear _,

I am applying to study a degree in economics principally because of the diversity of both the subject and its applications, and because I find it fascinating and challenging at the same time. Having studied the subject at A-level, I believe that the possible depths to which it may be studied are almost endless, and as such, the number of real-life situations to which it is relevant is similarly vast. For example, the area of economics in which I am most interested is the study of the ways in which monetary and fiscal policies affect society as a whole. For this reason, I found the Public Choice theory particularly engaging. In the future, I hope to gain employment in the banking or financial sector, and I think that a course as flexible as economics would be of great benefit to this.

Recently, I have participated in the Bank of England’s ‘Target 2.0’ challenge. From this, I not only improved skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication and analytical skills, but also learnt about the consequences that a seemingly small decision, such as the lowering of the interest rate by a quarter of one percent, can have on just about everyone. Another aspect of the project that I enjoyed was the way in which all of our team members’ research and work came together at the end to form the whole, and enabled us to come to a conclusion. I would very much like to have the opportunity to study this area, among others concerning the interest rate and monetary policy, in greater depth. I am enthusiastic about the subject, and a highly motivated student, and I therefore think that I would be well suited to studying economics at university level.

My hobbies mostly centre around music; I sing, play the piano to grade four standard, and have also composed music for keyboard-based instruments. I have found that the more knowledge of music, and its structures, that I have gained, the more insights into popular music I have acquired, and can then enjoy it on many more levels. I think that this holds true for many subjects: the more understanding you have of something, the more you can enjoy it. I also like to get involved in sports, such as swimming, in my spare time, as I find them a great way to unwind and have fun at the same time!

In secondary school, I held a position of responsibility as a prefect. I also sang soprano in the school choir, which again helped me to hone my skills of teamwork and co-operation. Prior to beginning sixth form, I spent a summer working as a volunteer in a scheme run for children with disabilities, which was both a lot of fun and very rewarding. Although working with some of the children was demanding and required the ability to adjust and adapt quickly, I would definitely say that it was worth it and would love to do it again. In addition, I currently have a part-time job in a retail environment. Because of this, I believe that I am able to communicate and solve problems more effectively. I have also gained understanding of the worlds of business and commerce within the context of a large company.

I have put serious consideration into my choice of course applications, and believe that I would be able to contribute both academically and socially to university life.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

In capacity as Professor of Mathematics at Fudan University I'm writing to recommend Mr. Wang Gesintosyour PhD program in Computer Science. I have known Mr. Wang since his sophomore year of college and have acted as his thesis advisor and mentor. In my experience he is a gifted and diligent student and an admirably hard worker.

Wang is an impressive student because he has been forced to overcome the significant challenge of a serious illness during his freshman year. When I first met Wang in my Discrete Math class he did not appear to be anything special to me. While his exam scores were good they were not as high as I would now expect of him. What I didn't know then was that due to his illness Wang was attempting to take all of the difficult early mathematics courses at one time including Discrete Mathematics Advanced Mathematics Linear Algebra and Possibilities. While most students found preparing for just one set of these exams difficult Wang was overwhelmed by four of them. But in the end he achieved an impressive score on the final exam which made me conscious of his unusual determination he demonstrates when confronting difficult challenges.

Mr. Wang and I have often talked about a variety of mathematics and computer science concepts and problems. During these discussions I always found him to be delightfully intelligent. Not only does he quickly understand the concepts and problems presented to him he is able to analyze these problems and present solutions. But perhaps most important is that Wang's thinking is intensely rigorous. When looking at any question he carefully scrutinizes it and if he finds any uncertain issues he clears them up immediately. I believe this kind of thought is essential to become an excellent computer programmer.

Serving as his thesis advisor I had a first-hand opportunity to observe the way in which Wang's mind works. In his senor thesis Mr. Wang mainly discussed two challenging questions in regards to″ANN″. In our books in China knowledge of ANN and its uses are very rare. Few people in China have studied this topic and consequently the materials that are available on ANN are limited. Working on this difficult project not only did Mr. Wang rise to the challenge but he went above and beyond the call of duty to analyze his secondary sources and test them for accuracy in practice. In this way he found mistakes in the book that we use. His diligence and hard work made me extremely proud of him.

Mr. Wang is an intelligent motivated and industrious individual. Teaching and advising him has been a delightful pleasure. I know that if given the chance to study abroad in America he will arm himself to become a great programmer he dreams of being. He has the intelligence and background to achieve these goals - now all he needs is the opportunity. I ask that you look upon his application favorably and grant him a chance to study in your university.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

A Master’s student of accounting at Xiamen University, the best higher-learning institution in China’s strategically important Province of Fujian, across the Straits from Taiwan, I would like to pursue Ph. D. studies in your distinguished program so that I can be assured a teaching career in my motherland.

My education so far is characterized by indisputable excellence. During the four years of my undergraduate studies, my GPA was consistently the highest in my class of 135 students. As you can see from the transcripts of my academic record, I received straight A’s for all the courses except for first-year Physical Education. My graduation was rated “Outstanding”, the highest rating possible. An in-depth analysis of the ethical standards of Chinese auditors, the paper was later published in a quality professional journal as a seminal study of a rarely studied topic in China. As the unquestionably best student in my year, I was accepted into graduate studies by the university without the normally mandatory entrance examinations.

In recognition of my academic performance and other strengths, I was decorated with many honors and accolades during my undergraduate studies. I was elected the monitor of the class and the Vice President of the university’s Student Union, making me the most important female student leader on campus. Among the financial awards I won was the Jiageng Scholarship, the university’s most prestigious award named after its founder Chen Jiageng, one of the best known patriotic Chinese in the first half of this century. The Jiageng /scholarship is offered to only ten students each year, and the offer is usually presented to the recipients by the university’s president in person in a grand ceremony, as it was in , when I got it.

In my undergraduate studies, I had broad academic interests, although I majored in accounting. I regularly read academic journals, both Chinese and international, to keep me abreast of the latest developments in accounting and other related fields. I devoted considerable time to learning such subjects as law and economics. My extensive knowledge provided me solid grounding as I narrowed down my research interest to professional ethics of accountants. In a country that has only an inchoate legal regime governing professional practice. Enforcing high ethical standards is both difficult and critical. But studies have been scant and haphazard so far. I am glad that I have made quite some contribution to the country’s discourse in this area.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

In a world that is continually growing and evolving and problems such as global warming and population growth becoming ever more real, the need for innovation and fresh ideas from the engineering world becomes increasingly evident. It is this that attracts me to civil engineering as a career because although I am aware of the many pressures and demands I would be facing, the sense of achievement and the knowledge that I would be making a difference to the lives of others would be of great personal reward to me!

My fascination for engineering started when I was young, and has only increased since then. I enjoyed playing video and computer games that required planning and strategy. I watched ???Extreme Engineering??? when it first aired on the Discovery channel and today I have seen every episode up to season five and am waiting to see the sixth season. I have a game called ???West Point Bridge designer??? that has taught me about the different properties of each type of bridge and allows me to experiment with different bridge designs as well as using different materials in the most cost effective way possible.

Unfortunately for my parents, this fascination extended into reverse engineering as well and ranged from my toys as a child to unused household items and broken cars and motorcycles as an adolescent. This interest was then nurtured during my schooling and college years - at school learning about the history of art and how the smallest engineering discoveries led to the biggest architectural breakthroughs, for instance the impact that the arch, concrete and the dome had on Ancient Roman and proceeding architecture. In college I thoroughly enjoyed mathematics and physics particularly in the applied sections, and although my grades do not reflect this, a big portion of my gap year has already been spent on preparation towards of their improvement.

As well as a lot of revision, my gap year so far has been a wealth of new experiences and challenges from things as silly as learning to juggle and ride a unicycle to teaching myself to play the keyboard and getting my motorcycle license. I also had a job as a general labourer working under the site manager on a building site where I worked alongside the tradesmen and occasionally the architect, thereby gaining valuable experience in keeping to the strict requirements of working to time schedules and regulations, planning, problem solving and keeping quality of work up and expenses down. Previous to that I worked at my local supermarket as a general assistant and was eventually promoted to a team leader. I was responsible for liaising with my managers and keeping them up to date with what was happening around the store and making sure my staff knew what was expected of them throughout their shifts as well as doing my own work around the store. This taught me how to deal with people in a variety of situations in a polite and professional manner while also greatly improving my communicational and social skills.

Being born and raised in South Africa and having made the transition and adaptation to English culture and way of life with ease, I have no doubt I would adapt in much the same way to university life. Also I think it is important that I have witnessed the differences in infrastructure between developed and third world countries and their respective effects on the surrounding populations and feel I could use this knowledge to my advantage.

I am a very active person and sport has always been a big part of my life. In high school I captained my cricket and rugby teams and was part of the swimming, tennis and athletics teams and represented my home province in cricket, athletics and surfing. Living over here I am a member of the local cricket and rugby club; I take part in the occasional darts and pool tournaments and am a regular at the local health centre. All of this means I have a lot of experience in performing under pressure, pushing myself and working well as a team.

By the end of my gap year I hope to have: fulfilled my travelling plans where I hope to go backpacking in Asia as I think it will be an awe-inspiring and eye opening experience; have learnt many more new skills and gained more relevant work experience; and hopefully begin a journey into becoming a part of the great and prolific industry of ingenuity and creativity that is the world of engineering.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

A senior student at the business school headed by China''s tough Prime Minister, I will graduate next year with a diploma to be conferred by the Quebec Association of Certified General Accountants in Canada in the first joint educational program of its kind between China and a foreign country. To build up a great career upon this rare privilege, I am now applying for advanced studies in your quality program, hoping that I can someday become one of China''s top accounting experts.

At Tsinghua, the country''s most valued cradle of advanced talents that houses my favored School of Business Management, I have been head and shoulders above most of my fellow students in my class of 122. I ranked among the top 2 per cent in macroeconomics, top 3 per cent in macroeconomics, top 5 per cent in international finance, and top 2 per cent in international trading. My performance in mathematics has been particularly strong, with my GPA in related courses probably the very best in the class. The CGA diploma requires completion of 12 courses taught in English, of which I have finished eight, with a GPA better than that of most others.

My distinguished academic performance won me the privilege of being chosen as the only Special-Training Student in my class of 122 to join the university''s Program for the Gifted. Through this elite program, I participated in a challenging research project headed Professor Chun Xiyang, head of the school''s accounting department. The project was aimed at finding the best way to control cost at the North China Petrochemical Corporation, one of the country''s best known companies. As part of my research, I studied the corporate management systems in the United States, Japan, Britain and Germany, and analyzed the structure of Chinese companies. By the time I finished my part of the project to professor Chun''s satisfaction, I had not only broadened my knowledge but also acquired the ability, unique among China''s undergraduate students, to conduct research independently.

Taking advantage of the university''s emphasis on cultivating independent thinking and practical research abilities, I have actively engaged in a variety of research activities. I teamed up with several students to investigate into China''s township enterprises and wrote a research paper under the guidance of our professors. With the help of my professor in public finance, I studied the country''s taxation system that is designed to divide revenues between central and provincial governments, and I did this in comparison with the taxation regimes of America and France. My article, China''s Taxation Reform, analyzed the possible approaches of improving that system. In my third academic year, I wrote The Accounting Structure in Share-holding Enterprises, an article that dealt with the solutions to the problems in the accounting system of the said companies. In my second year, I worked as an intern at China Industrial and Commercial Bank and acquainted myself thereby with the prevalent accounting practices of the country''s financial institutions. Such involvement in practical research has added both depth and breadth to my learning of accounting.

Much of my academic achievements can be credited to my solid command of the English, which has allowed me to read international accounting journals with ease. Among my regular readings are Accounting Review, Accountancy, Public Finance Review, and others. I have translated Proposed Statement of Financial Accounting Concepts. My English proficiency is also reflected in the scores I obtained in various English tests such as TOEFL (633,10/97),GRE general (total 2220, verbal 660, 93%; quantitative 790, 98%; analytical 770, 96%), and GMAT (740, 99%; verbal 40, 92%;quantitative 50, 99%). I am sure that, with such language skills, I can pursue advanced studies in an English-speaking environment.

In recognition of my outstanding academic record, the university has selected me to enter into graduate studies without the usually mandatory admission exams, a privilege given to only a few of the very best students each year. I have, however, decided to turn down the offer. I believe I will be able to learn more on the accounting/finance program by pursuing graduate studies in your university. Your program of graduate research and studies is known to be holding a leading position in the field. Under the guidance of your distinguished faculty and with the benefit of your remarkable research facilities, I am sure I will be able to ground myself solidly in my chosen career. After my Ph. D. studies, I plan to return to Tsinghua, where I shall devote myself to a lifetime of teaching and research.

Yours sincerely,

xuexila

Dear _,

Who am I? This is possibly the most ambiguous question, whereby a hidden depth of meaning is drowned by a trivialized sense of simplicity. I could merely reveal my name, but would that really portray who I was? “We become ourselves through others” claims Vygotsky, but are we all just conformists? Are our personalities just embedded in our genes? Do we act the way we do because we want to? Is it free will which makes us who we are? Debates such as nature v. nurture and free will v. determinism fuel my desire to learn more about both psychology and philosophy.

My passion for philosophy was sparked when reading Mitch Albom’s “The Five People You Meet in Heaven”, which overrides logic and offers an alternative to religious belief. The book itself left me highly motivated to pursue philosophical inquiry in greater depth. Through studying A level psychology I have developed a particular interest in social psychology and the influence social pressures can have on behaviour whilst developing vital skills such as the ability to critically analyse a study or theory.

Aspects of each of my A level subjects have influenced my choice of degree. Open mindedness is essential when studying A level politics. The subject itself spurs endless abstract thought, especially when concerning issues such as power. The curriculum has also enabled me to partake in structured debate with the ability to articulate personal views being essential. In addition to oral communication, essay writing is also a key feature of the syllabus and my powers of expression are constantly evolving. My ability to analyse and develop my writing skills has been accelerated through studying English at higher level, my current concentration upon metaphysical poetry and the underlying message behind abstract imagery. Studying AS level history has enabled me to investigate the different reactions to political, social, cultural, religious and economic situations.

I have been a prefect since and act as a role model to younger students as well as being an ambassador for the school. I am a learning champion within the History department whereby I work with students who require additional tutoring in order to successfully pass their GCSE’s. I have to be well prepared and patient but find it rewarding when my tutee grasps the concept. Last summer I was involved in the organization, development and supervision of a lower school fun day. Being selected to lead a small group of my peers with the brief of organizing this year’s Post 16 Prom has helped develop my confidence as it has involved visiting and selecting a venue, organizing catering, transport, publicity and the funding of the event.

Currently I work for a well established retail store; working has taught me to be flexible and adaptable as well as emphasizing the importance of time management when working under pressure. An enthusiastic, trustworthy and approachable manner is vital in the workplace in order to maintain the already high standards expected of the store. Previously I was employed in direct marketing where I monitored the system operations and the dispatch of relevant post and information. This role required me to work both in small teams and independently as well as applying my ICT skills in a real world situation.

I enjoy travelling and experiencing different cultures including the individualist New York in comparison to the collectivist streets of Havana. I am a gregarious person and enjoy spending time with close friends engaging particularly in shopping trips and social gatherings. I also regularly attend the gym in order to achieve realistic self set goals.

As an outgoing person I feel I would be able to contribute to and gain from a psychology and philosophy dual course which I see as both challenging and an exciting journey whilst helping me to understand people’s beliefs, behaviour and identity. That’s “who I am”, who are you?

Yours sincerely,
