Are Prizes a Good Thing?
Directions: In this part, you are to write an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes. Your essay should be based on the OUTLINE below.
Are Prizes a Good Thing?
There is no denying the fact that competitions with prizes can bring people’s initiative into full play. Encouraged by a strong desire to win a prize, one will go all out to seek his greatest success. In addition, he will make special efforts and resort to effective measures to achieve his purpose. Consequently, the best results will be obtained in game with awards.
Everything, however, has two sides. The prompting of a prize does not always lead to desirable results. There are always people who would stop at nothing to get what they are greedy for. For example, a competitor who cannot overcome the temptation of prize is likely to take a stimulant. And the hopeless competitor sees nothing but the prize, which might cause improper behavior. Let’s have another example ……….
In my opinion, the remedy lies in moral education of competitors, This will help them to understand the slogan:” Friendship –first, and competition – second.” Then, prizes will play a better part in any contest. Generally speaking, I believe that prizes are a good thing, (175 words )

(composition for reference only )
many people prefer to travel by air. this is because air travel has some advantages. in the first place, airplane, the miracle created by man, is the fastest means of transport. it takes the least time for one to travel by air from one place to another. secondly, traveling by air is convenient and comfortable. friendly air hostesses are affectionate and considerate. they look after passengers all the way to their destinations. moreover, on long distance flights there are films and music for people to entertain themselves.
as a popular saying goes, “everything has two sides.” the same is true of air travel. it has some disadvantages, too. for one thing, air travel costs a great deal. the average chinese are not rich enough to afford expensive air fares. so they prefer to take trains, which save a lot of money. for another, although passengers are assured of their safety, they are still worried about it during the journey because flying always involves more or less risk.

Directions : In this part, you are to write an essay on “Opportunity and Success “. You should write about 200 words within 40 minutes on ANSWER SHEET2. Your essay should be based on the following outline:
1. Contingency (偶然性) of opportunity
2. Relationship Between opportunity and success
3. My view on opportunity
Opportunities don’t come often. They come every once in a while. Very often, they come quietly and go by without being noticed. Therefore, it is advisable that you should value and treat them with care.
When an opportunity presents itself, it brings a promise but never realizes it on its own. If you want to achieve something or intend to fulfill one of your ambitions you must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. Otherwise, you will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit you. It is clear that in order to be highly qualified for out future jobs, we should make every possible preparation.
The difference between a man who succeeds and one who does not lies only in the way each treats opportunities. The successful person always makes adequate preparations to meet opportunities as they duly arrive. The unsuccessful person, on the other hand, works little and just waits to see them pass by. Obviously, the two different attitudes towards opportunities may lead to quite different consequences.
In my opinion, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, in our society, but only those who are prepared adequately and qualified highly can make use of them to achieve their purpose. (208 words )

Directions: Some people believe that private cars should be encouraged in China. Others argue that private cars should be discouraged in China. There has been a controversy recently on the issue in a newspaper in China. Write a letter to the newspaper’s editor to
1. state the present situation of private cars in China
2. offer reasons for or against owning private cars
3. give your own opinion on the issue
Write a letter of about 200 words within 40 minutes. Your letter must be written neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m writing to you to express my willingness to take part in the controversy on private cars and advance my views.
With the living standards rising rapidly, more and more Chinese people have cars of their own. Statistics show that in Beijing alone, there are 1620,000 cars, among which private cars add up to (=number) 560,000. the increase in the number of cars brings about a lot of problems, such as air pollution, noise and traffic congestion. Then a controversy arises: whether private cars should be encouraged in China? People differ in their ideas about it.
Many people are against owning cars. According to them, private cars have to be limited in China. The reasons for it are obvious. To begin with, cars contribute to air pollution. A lot of big cities in China are now plagued by serious air pollution. If people are to have cars of their own, the already contaminated atmosphere will get even dirtier. Secondly, private cars can be a dire threat to the already terrible traffic in China. If more cars are allowed onto busy streets, more traffic jams will happen, which is really a public hazard to all of us. Finally, cars consume a large amunt of fuel. Though China is rich in its oil resources, they are running out rapidly. All these facts allow of only one solution: to limit the ever growing number of cars.
In my opinion, private cars should be discouraged in China. To leave clean air, wide and safe roads and abundant energy resources to our descendants, we have to say “No” to private cars. As far as the great demand for means of transport is concerned, we can develop mass transit to take the place of private cars. In short, China does not need private cars.
If you require any further comment on the issue, please don’t hesitate to call me up. My home number is 66661818.
Thanks.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Hua
Outline:
1. Interpret the graph above.
2. Give possible reasons for the change in the number of film-goers and TV-watchers.
3. Predict future prospect.
A recent survey analyzed the change in number of film-goers and TV watchers in X city. As is shown by the graph, there has been a sharp decline in the number of film-goers during the period from 1992 to 2002, adding up to 20,000 in 2002. On the other hand, the number of TV watchers has steadily increase in the last decade, reaching 150,000 in 2002. Finally, it is interesting to note that there were as many film-goers as TV watchers in year .
There might be two reason, I think, for the change. Firstly, TV is not only a convenient source of entertainment, but a comparatively cheap one. There is no point in arranging transport. And one needn’t pay for expensive seats at the cinema. Secondly, TV makes it possible for one to keep track of current events and the latest developments in science and technology. As a consequence, most people prefer to stay at home, watching TV, rather than go out to the cinema, which wastes both time and money.
Personally, there are still a lot of people who enjoy watching films. They argue that the film is a fascinating form of art. Sitting comfortably in the cinema, one can appreciate the latest movies, which will usually be shown on TV far later on. Therefore, I trust the number of film-goers will be on the rise in the future.
Directions:
A. Study the following graph carefully and write an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes
B. Your essay must be written neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.
C. Your essay should meet the requirements below:
1. describe the increase in the farmer’s average personal income
2. give possible reasons for the increase
3. predict future prospect
According to the figures given by the graph, the Chinese farmers’ personal income rose steadily from 1970 to 1990. In the middle of 1970’s their income was rather low. Their annual personal income was about 180 yuan. But in 1980 the average personal income increased approximately 50%, reaching 270 yuan. As is shown by the graph, in 1985 their income doubled, amounting to 540 yuan. After that there was a consistent tendency for income to grow. In a word, during the period of 20 years the farmers’ income had gone up rapidly.
There were two reasons for the increase in the farmers’ income in China. Firstly, the Chinese government had been carrying out a reform and opening policy. A large number of county-run enterprises had been set up in the rural areas. Secondly, a significant reform of agricultural policy had been carried out in China. The Party’s policy had brought farmers’ initiative into full play. As a result, the agricultural output had been on the rise all the time. All these factors resulted in the steady growth of farmers’ income.
I believe that with a series of agricultural policies being carried out, there will be even more rapid development in China’s agriculture. There is no doubt that the farmers’ living standard will be improved to a great extent. (220 words)

On University Tuition System in China
Directions: It is reported that many universities in China have begun to charge students for tuition. Should university students in China pay their own tuition ? State two opposite opinions and illustrate them in detail. Write an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes.

Tuition system has become one of the hottest topics in China since it was put into effect. Reports on this topic are published in a variety of newspapers and magazines. People differ greatly in their opinions on it.
Some people think that there is no university in the world which is open to students without tuition. As far as China is concerned, it is a developing country with the largest population in the world. The government is unable to allocate enough funds to pay for various teaching facilities and many different kinds of expenses. One of the ways to relieve the problem is for students to pay tuition. The money raised in this way can be used to improve the conditions for running schools.
Others, however, are opposed to the tuition system. They argue that the living standard of the Chinese people, especially of those in the poor rural areas, is still low, compared with that in the Western World. The university tuition will certainly add to the already heavy burden of the parents, who live on their salaries or wages. Moreover, tuition may become an obstacle to the development of China’s higher education. This is because it hinders some talented people from entering the university just on account of their poverty.
Directions: In this part, you are to write an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes. Your essay must meet the requirements below.
1. Show your understanding of the meaning of the picture below
2. State the harmful effects of fake and inferior products
3. Suggest ways to fight against fake and inferior products
As the picture given depicts, the socialist market-oriented economy in our country is developing rapidly, just like a truck running at a high speed. But the general public is surprised to find that there are more and more fake and inferior products seriously hampering the expansion of our marker economy. Consumers have to be very careful in purchasing goods and services they need; otherwise they will fall into the traps set by the illegal manufacturers who make fake and inferior products.
There is no doubt that fake and inferior products are extremely harmful. In the first place, they endanger people’s health, giving rise to a lot of injury accidents. For instance, inferior-quality medicines not only aggravate a patient’s condition, but also tend to threaten his life and, what’s worse, to result in his death. Secondly, fake and inferior products are usually sold on the cheap. In many cases they interfere with the normal economic order in our country, affecting the market of many high-quality goods. This in a great degree, hinders the development of our socialist market economy and harms the interests of our state. Therefore, we can say that fake and inferior products are a dangerous “tumor” in our healthy economy, which must be cut away as soon possible.
In my opinion, several strong measures should be adopted to fight against fake and inferior products. On the one hand, those who make them must be severely punished by the law. On the other hand, due to the growing complexity of the market, consumers are often faced with deceptive practices. Although there are laws designed to protect consumers, there is not a sufficient number of law enforcers to cover all the abuses of the marketplace. Hence, consumers should learn to discern between true and false. Only in this way can they defend their own legal rights and interests.

Directions:
A Study the following pie chart carefully and write an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes.
B Your essay must be written neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.
C Your essay should meet the requirements below:
1 Describe the pie chart.
2 State the possible benefits brought about by the investment.
3 Suggest measures helping to attract investment from outside
Investment in Beijing from Different Countries and Regions
Hong Kong ---44%
Japan --- 19.2%
U.S.A.---16%
Other 23 countries ---21.8%
Since China opened its door to the outside world in 1979, Beijing has made remarkable results in attracting foreign business to invest in joint ventures. According to the pie chart, the investors in different enterprises come from 26 countries and regions. Hong Kong investment ranks first, accounting for 44 per cent of the total. Japan’s investment makes up 19.2 per cent, putting it in second spot. Third is the United States at 16 per cent.
It is generally believed that Beijing benefits a lot from the outside investment. In the first place, a large number of joint ventures have been set up, which contributes greatly to the development of Capital Economy. Secondly, the foreign-invested enterprises offer a lot of jobs to the residents in Beijing. This in turn relieves the problem of laid-off workers in the city. Finally, the high-tech enterprises in the capital will grow rapidly as Beijing enjoys the same preferential policies as coastal cities open to the outside world.
As far as the measures to attract outside investment are concerned, I think they are as follows. On the one hand, we should make special efforts to improve the investment environment. On the other hand, we should take advantage of this opportunity to run the present foreign-invested enterprises efficiently. ( 210 words )

Tourism, a smokeless industry, is developing rapidly in China. With the reform and opening –up policy being carried out, thousands upon thousands of foreign visitors are crowding into our country. They are eager to see this old mysterious land with a splendid culture of more than 5, 000 years.
Tourism as a form of enterprise brings China a lot of benefits. In the fires place, it is financially beneficial to the economic development of China. As our know, China needs more and more foreign currencies for its modernization program. Tourism is one of the most important channels to obtain currencies. Secondly, tourism enables the Chinese people to know more about the outside world. On the other hand, the foreigners who have visited China are deeply impressed by the latest developments of out country and the friendliness and hospitality of our people. Reports by visitors to China about how courteous and helpful most Chinese were to them are often printed in newspapers of many different countries. It is clear that tourism contributes a great deal to the friendship and mutual understanding between the Chinese people and people all over the world.
Everything, however, has two sides. Tourism gives rise to a number of problems. For instance, it becomes a burden to our inefficient transportation system. Besides, the living standard of the average Chinese is still not high enough to be able to afford the many different sorts of expenses during long distance travels. Therefore, there are still a lot of obstacles hindering the expansion of tourism in our country.
As for me, with the development of our national economy, all these problems will certainly be solved step by step. A much better and brighter future awaits us. (287 words)

dear sir or madam,
i’m writing to you to state my view on the water pollution problem. it is generally accepted that water pollution is a serious public hazard today. rivers all over the world are becoming polluted with garbage and dangerous chemicals. ships contribute to the problem because they rely on rivers for disposing of wastes. oil and other chemicals can kill fish and make water unsafe for drinking. because they rely on rivers for disposing of wastes. oil and other chemicals can kill fish and make water unsafe for drinking. in a word, polluted water is a big problem to everyone.
as you know, people depend on water to live on. they should be involved in finding a solution to this problem. i think, certain counter measures need to be taken as soon as possible. to begin with, the governments of all countries are supposed to formulate rules and regulations to deal with the pollution problem. in addition, factories in towns and cities must be prohibited from draining waste liquids into rivers before they are totally treated and purified. i feel if they violate relevant rules or laws, they should be fined heavily. certainly, there are some other cures which are worth adopting.
as far as future prospect is concerned, i am sure that good results will be achieved in this respect. rivers which used to be contaminated by industrial wastes will be cleaned and fish which could not live there a few years ago will be again. to conclude, it seems obvious that tomorrow will be better and brighter only if everyone does his part and tries hard to seek solutions for its control.
if any further comment on the issue is required, please don’t hesitate to write to me.
thanks.

Opportunity and Success(提纲式作文)
2.Relationship between opportunity and success
3.My view on opportunity
Opportunities don’t come often. They come every once in a while. Very often, they come quietly and go by without being noticed. Therefore, it is advisable that you should value and treat them care.
When an opportunity comes , it brings a promise but never realizes it on its own. If you want to achieve something or intend to fulfil one of your ambitions, you must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. Otherwise, you will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit you.
The difference between a man who succeeds and one who does not lies only in the way each treats opportunities. The successful person always makes adequate preparations to meet opportunities as they duly arrive. The unsuccessful person, on the other hand, works little and just waits to see pass by.
In my opinion, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, but only those who are prepared adequately and qualified highly can make use of them to achieve purpose.
1. 理解文章的主旨、抓住全文的中心思想和展开中心思想的逻辑层次;
2. 理解文章中的具体信息和细节;
3. 理解明确或隐含表达的概念性含义;
4. 进行有关的判断、推理和引申;
5. 根据上下文推测不熟悉词语的含义;
6. 理解作者的写作目的、态度、语气及文章的基调;
I. Reading Comprehension:
Text 1
( RC 4 )
Americans today don’t place a very high value on intellect. Our heroes are athletes, entertainers, and entrepreneurs, not scholars. Even our schools are where we send our children to get a practical education C not to pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Symptoms of pervasive anti-intellectualism in our schools aren’t difficult to find.
Schools have always been in a society where practical is more important than intellectual,” says education writer Diane Ravitch. “Schools could be a counterbalance.” Ravitch’s latest book, Left Back: A Century of Failed School Reforms, traces the roots of anti-intellectualism in our schools, concluding they are anything but a counterbalance to the American distaste for intellectual pursuits.
But they could and should be. Encouraging kids to reject the life of the mind leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and control. Without the ability to think critically, to defend their ideas and understand the ideas of others, they cannot fully participate in our democracy. Continuing along this path, says writer Earl Shorris, “We will become a second-rate country. We will have a less civil society.”
“Intellect is resented as a form of power or privilege,” writes historian and professor Richard Hofstadter in Anti-Intellectualism in American Life, a Pulitzer Prize winning book on the roots of anti-intellectualism in US politics, religion, and education. From the beginning of our history, says Hofstadter, our democratic and populist urges have driven us to reject anything that smells of elitism. Practicality, common sense, and native intelligence have been considered more noble qualities than anything you could learn from a book.
Ralph Waldo Emerson and other transcendentalist philosophers thought schooling and rigorous book learning put unnatural restraints on children:” We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for 10 or 15 years and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing.” Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn exemplified American anti-intellectualism. Its hero avoids being civilized C going to school and learning to read C so he can preserve his innate goodness.
Intellect, according to Hofstadter, is different from native intelligence, a quality we reluctantly admire. Intellect is the critical, creative, and contemplative side of the mind. Intelligence seeks to grasp, manipulate, re-order, and adjust, while intellect examines, ponders, wonders, theorizes, criticizes and imagines.
School remains a place where intellect is mistrusted. Hofstadter says our country’s educational system is the grips of people who “joyfully and militantly proclaim their hostility to intellect and their eagerness to identify with children who show the least intellectual promise.” (414 words)

Directions: In the following article, some sentences have been removed. For Questions 41 C 45, choose the most suitable one from the list A C G to fit into each of the numbered blank. There are two extra choices, which do not fit in any of the gaps. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points)
There are basically two types of stress placed on human beings. One type of stress involves physical activity and its demands; the other type of stress is the result of mental and emotional demands. Stress from physical activity, if not carried too far, is actually beneficial. Exercise relaxes you and may help forget about mental and emotional stress. 41) .
Whether physical or emotional in origin, stress causes the body to react in the same way. In the first stage, your body prepares to meet the stress. The heartbeat and respiration rates increase, and the pupils of the eyes dilate; the blood sugar level increases, and the rate of perspiration speeds up, while digestion slows down as blood and muscular activity is diverted elsewhere. In the second stage, your body returns to normal and repairs any damage caused by the stressful situation. 42)
. These stages of stress reaction are always the same, whether the stress is caused by a cross-country run, a first date, buying a house, or narrowly missing an automobile accident.
43) . If we did not feel guilty, we would never do anything except the things that brought us immediate pleasure ― we’d never obey the law, work, exercise, or even study in school, unless we wanted to do so in the first place. As a person’s conscience develops, guilt feelings become inevitable; guilt is the sorrow we experience when we know we have done something incorrect.
44) . But many people do feel guilty over such apparently innocent actions. Excessive guilt can sour all of life and make life not worth living; it can also cause self-hatred as well as other fears and anxieties that cause all life’s successes to be bittersweet, at best.
45) .
A life without stress, such as retirement with nothing to do, would be boring. Just as we need a little guilt ― to keep us correct ― and a little worry ― to make us plan ahead ― we need a little stress to stay interested in life. But when stress begins to bother you, you might as well change your routine. Take your mind off your worries with some physical activity; you may discover a solution you have overlooked before. (600 words)
eradicate vt. at best 充其量。 might as well 不妨。
[A] However, many of us as children learned rules that we no longer need: fat adults should no longer feel guilty about leaving a little food on the plate, a successful businessman need not feel guilty about spending a little too much money on a vacation, nor should he feel guilty that he can combine a business trip to the West Coast with some swimming and golf at an ocean resort.
[B] But mental stress is almost always bad for you. If mental stress is unrelieved, it can actually cause diseases such as ulcers, migraine headaches, heart problems, or mental illness
[C] Guilt and the worry that often accompanies this major stress are difficult to eradicate, but people subject to excessive guilt feelings should realize, as simple as it sounds, that no one is perfect. People cannot always be cheerful and helpful to every one they meet. Another good lesson is that mistakes should be forgotten, not lingered over and brought out to examine periodically.
[D] Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.
[E] Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities, others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties.
[F] However, if stress continues, the body cannot repair itself, and the final stage, exhaustion, then begins. If this stage continues, if for example you are frustrated by your work and continue to be frustrated for a long time, physical or emotional damage will occur.
[G] Probably most harmful of all the stresses is guilt; this common emotion is useful to have when it helps us to realize that we have, in fact, committed some error, violated our own rules or social rules.
Tourism, a smokeless industry, is developing rapidly in China. With the opening and reform policy being carried out, thousands upon thousands of foreign visitors are crowding into our country. They are eager to see this old mysterious land with a splendid culture of more than 5,000 years.
Tourism brings China a lot of benefits. First, it enables the Chinese people to know more about the outside world and promotes friendship and understanding. Second, it is financially beneficial to China, which needs more foreign currencies for its modernization program.
Tourism, however, gives rise to a number of problems. For instance, it becomes a burden to inefficient transportation system. Besides, the living standard of the average Chinese is still not high enough to be able to afford the many different sorts of expenses during long distance travels. As for me, with the development of our national economy, all these problems will certainly be solved step by step. A much better and brighter future awaits us.
Directions 4
Study the following table carefully and write an essay in which you should:
1. describe the table,
2. suggest possible solutions to the problem of the heavy burden of university tuition in China.
You should write 160~200 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.
Sample:
From the above table we can see that in America and Britain the ratio of average annual tuition of universities to gross national income per capita is about 1 to 10, but astonishingly that in China is 1. That is to say, the burden of university tuition on Chinese families is nearly ten times heavier than that on American or British families. As a matter of fact, most Chinese families feel it difficult to afford the high tuition of their children, and some absolutely cannot afford it, which has received more and more concern from all over the country.
In order to solve this problem, I strongly suggest the following solutions. First and foremost, it is a must to reduce the cost of higher education. We need to cut down the staff in universities, most of whom now have a disproportionately large number of administrators. The now widespread corruption should also be eliminated in universities, such as unnecessary tours and banquets at public expense. Moreover, much importance should be attached to the reform of management system of higher education. The national government should not only increase financial investment in higher education but also optimize the distribution of such money.
To sum up, it is high time to pay enough attention to the problem of the heavy burden of university tuition in our country, and to solve it a comprehensive educational reform is essential.
the media and famous people
in almost every form of media, including television, newspapers and magazines, a great deal of attention is paid to the personal lives of celebrities. it seems that the public cannot get enough of this kind of news. however, i believe that the media have a responsibility to present a balanced view of the world, as well as respect the lives of public figures. therefore, i believe that the media pay too much attention to the personal lives of famous people.
for people who are fascinated with the lives of public figures there are some forms of media devoted exclusively to this topic. they can satisfy their curiosity by buying fan magazines and watching tv shows devoted to entertainment news. the general media should present all types of information because people have different interests. furthermore, the practice of dwelling on the private lives of celebrities can lead people to pay more attention to these matters than they otherwise would. perhaps most importantly, the media should respect the privacy of every individual, including public figures. they may have chosen to be in the public eye, but that does not give the public the right to know everything about them. moreover, many stories about celebrities are untrue; they are only gossip reported to increase sales of magazines and other media. they are unfair to the famous and mislead the public.
for all of these reasons, i believe that the media should pay more attention to matters other than the private lives of public figures. in this way, they can appeal to a wider audience and encourage people to develop other interests. in my opinion, the media currently pay too much attention to the private lives of public figures.
