我与英文是大学系友，高他两级，又曾是同事。几十年的君子之交，虽过往不密，却彼此牵扯。他视我为兄，能够尊重长者；我热爱文学，知道尊重文化。于是，我俩就有了友谊的结合点。大约十年前，一次英文来访，手机预告：“狼来了。”我忙回曰：“豺狼来了，有！”不料，枪未备好，狼已经嬉皮笑脸地进门了。

英文出书，嘱我作序，大约是尊老吧。作为文学爱好者给作家写序，我以为这是英文给我的待遇。英文的这本书属于书法与小品文的“杂交”。杂交是有优势的，书文混搭相得益彰，倒有了字承汉唐、文续魏晋的架势。现如今，大凡善为文者不一定精于书，精于书者又不一定善为文，而英文既属著名作家，又属“著名”书法家，可谓文、书俱佳。可喜可贺！

英文散淡，常以文人无行态示人。他生动、幽默，有时又故弄玄虚、稀里马哈。我常说他没正形，他则反曰我太正经。但客观地讲，从骨子里看，英文是一个正直、勤奋、认真、有着潜在责任意识和使命感的文化人，在他看似稀松的.外表之下，常常可以看出他对生活的独特思考；在其大大咧咧的神态背后，常常有着人生的诚恳和作为作家的追求。

英文的文字诙谐、灵动、机智、敏捷，有神有气、有风有韵、特色独具、文风奇谲。不时听人说英文是个怪熊，这种怪体现在其特立独行的奇谈怪论，假装正经的深思熟虑，鬼背蛇腰的审视姿态，似清非醒的世说新语。他善于从司空见惯的现象中去发掘生活的灵感，生发出不同凡响。一个“就”字可以成篇，一只鸭子可以为文，而且意气风发。他常常在嬉笑怒骂中进行关于社会和人生的冷思考，出其不意，道人欲道而未道，发人欲省而未省。我常常攻击英文的胡言乱语，但其胡言乱语中有不动声色的不同凡响、有拐弯抹角的真知灼见。陈忠实先生曾对我说，他只要看见报上有英文的文章，是一定要看的。这大概是对英文文字的最好评价了。

字，我不在行，没有发言权。我是因为认同英文的人而接纳他的字的，但他的字到底几斤几两，我的确说不清楚。英文曾手书过我的词，后经装裱挂在我办公室。一次，他到我处发现那字竟然倚墙站在地上了，很不平衡：“这么好的字，怎么能放到地上呢？！”我耐心地劝解：“很多到我办公室的朋友，一看到这幅字总要说：‘谁写的字？可惜这好词和框子了！’为了平民愤，我只好把它放到地上。”英文为此愤愤不平耿耿于怀了很久。不过，英文知耻而后勇，由此开始，浪子回头，勤作文，苦习书，日以继夜。在我看来，他的字似乎比以前好看了些。从他的表情看，写字的劲头比以前大了，自信了，说起自己的字自负了。他曾不无得意地告诉我：现在，求字的人多了，忙！我想，求的人多，应该也算写得好的一个佐证吧。需求决定价值。当然，也不排除方英文王婆卖瓜式的自炒。
