这一幕前后仅仅维持了一两分钟的时间，却在人们的脑海中牢牢定格。面对生与死的选择，母亲毫不犹豫地把生的希望留给了女儿，把死的威胁留给了自己，这一瞬间折射出的不正是人世间最博大无私、最崇高的母爱吗?

王二小，又名王朴，1929年生于河北省涞源县上庄村。抗日战争时期，王二小的家乡是八路军抗日根据地，经常受到日本鬼子的“扫荡”。王二小是儿童团团员，他常常在山坡上一边放牛，一边给八路军放哨。
1942年9月16日早上，鬼子扫荡来了，二小眼看着鬼子向乡亲们转移的方向走去，心里非常着急，为了掩护几千名老乡和干部，他不顾自己的生命危险，唱着放牛歌勇敢的向鬼子走去。迷失了方向，昏头转向的鬼子拿着刺刀，一把抓住二小，要他带路。二小心里很镇定，却装出很害怕的样子，“听话”地说：“行，行，我给你们带路。”
于是，二小牵着一头壮牛，走在鬼子的前面，将他们带到八路军埋伏的山沟，二小机灵地从沟边往山上跑。四下里立刻乒乒乓乓响起了枪炮声，鬼子这才知道受了骗，那小队长气急败坏，提起大枪追上二小，把那尖尖地刺刀一下子扎进二小瘦小的身体，挑在枪尖，狠狠地摔在了大石头上。二小的鲜血染红每一片树叶和绿草，染红了蓝蓝的天。他含着微笑，安详地闭上了双眼，永远睡在了冰冷的山间。二小的大壮牛像是要报仇，埋头直冲，用尖角挑死了鬼子小队长。
秋风吹遍了每个村庄，把这动人的故事传扬，每个老乡都含着眼泪，歌唱着二小放牛郎。
