Hints for Academic Writing Task 1
DONT copy any part of the question in your answer. This is not your own work and therefore will be disregarded by the examiner and deducted from the word count. You can use individual words but be careful of using long chunks of the question text.
Dont repeat yourself or the same ideas. This gives a bad impression and the examiner realises that it isnt adding to the content of your report.
If you are weak at English grammar, try to use short sentences. This allows you to control the grammar and the meaning of your writing much more easily and contributes to a better cohesion and coherence mark. Its much easier to make things clear in a foreign language if you keep your sentences short!
As I just said, if you have finished the exam with time to spare, DONT just sit there!! Check what you have done. If you have time after the check, check again. And so on....
Dont be irrelevant. Although you can use your imagination to expand on your answer, if any part of your report is totally unrelated to the question and put in to just put up the word count, then the examiner will not take it into account and deduct it from the word count.
If you want to improve, theres no secret. Practice. Practice. Practice. You wont get better sitting and doing nothing. Even good English users need practice for the IELTS exam. It could make all the difference between your getting the band that you need, and getting half a band less than you need and having to wait 3 months to do the exam again.

If you have time, a quick check of your verbs at the end of the exam can help you find errors. For describing graphs you will probably need past tenses whereas, for describing a process, you will probably need the present simple. Think about the verbs while practising and then it will become easier when you do the exam.

In my country, a century ago, it was not easy for a child to grow up due to malnutrition and diseases. But today, parents are able to not only guarantee children’s material abundance, but also provide them with qualified education. All these allow children to have more freedom enabling them to have better development.
Admittedly, it seems plausible to assert that children, given the young age, are not mature enough to enjoy much freedom. Obviously, children sometimes lack necessary experience and knowledge for them to make right decision or regulate their behaviors. Without any restriction, they may fail to resist the temptation and indulge themselves with freedom. For example, they are likely to spend all their pocket money on snacks, such as candies and puffed food, which is bad for health, or they waste too much time on watching TV and playing computer games, which squeeze up their time for other more meaningful activities.
However, with parents’ appropriate and effective supervision and guidance, children can benefit a lot from the freedom. It is parents’ responsibility to help children cultivate self-discipline and self-control and teach them how to judge right and wrong. All these are indispensable for children to enjoy freedom. Hence, they are free to explore the outside world and govern their life. The free access to Internet enables them to gain knowledge and make friends; the free choices of study and entertainment help them become independent and responsible. In a word, with the freedom, children are able to nurture many valuable traits and habits.
To sum up, it is beneficial for children today to have much freedom in life.
In many parts of the world, children have more freedom than they used to. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

雅思大作文:it is irrational to forbid the animal products
In modern world, it is no longer necessary to use animals for food or use animal products, for instance, clothing and medicines. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your ownknowledge or experience.
With the advance of the technology, a colossal number of animal products can be replaced by artificial or synthetic elements in the modern society. As a result, many people claim that there is no longer necessary to consume animals to produce any food, clothing, and medicines. But I personally believe such opinion is invalid.
At no circumstance, can the animal products be replaced. First of all, human body cannot depart from meat, since our muscles is built by absorbing the protein coming from meat. And a huge number of necessary nutrition which is crucial to maintain our whole physical system also come animal food products. Thus, without meat, there would be negative effects on our health. In addition, abandoning all the animal products will definitely curb the augment of the economy. More specifically, ifthe market does not consume the animal products any more, animal husbandry would be totally destroyed, generating the unemployment of hundreds of thousands of farmers, then relatively, social instability would appear and the economy would collapse. Clearly, it is irrational to forbid the animal products.
However, some people argue that human beings have the obligation to stop use any animal products as the technology has way developed than before so that the substitution of animal products can be easily found. Unfortunately, such advocate fail to recognize the reality that many animal products, especially some medicines, cannot be replaced. Furthermore, these people do not distinguish the concept between animal preservation and animal products consumption. In other words, to abandon the animal products is not the best way to protect the animal.
In conclusion, it is to early to abandon all the animal products, regardless of the valid alternatives resulting from the advance of the technology. And accordingly, the averages should understand that rejecting any animal products dose not stand for the animal protection.
雅思大作文:drug companies have the responsibility to help the poorer countries
Some people say that drug companies have the responsibility to spend money on researching medicine to help the poorer countries, others think the main responsibility of drug companies is making money. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Nowadays, people attach more importance on health due to the increase of the cost on treatment. Whether the medical companies should take some social responsibility has raised a fierce discussion in the society, for which I reckon the answer is yes.
It is obvious that, in some cases, companies especially the national or multinational enterprises play as an leader not only in promoting the local economy, but also the spiritual aspect, where their intangible impact comes from, and that is more significant for medical industry, because the area is close to the public’s life. Such corporations have the ability, including distributing the fund and technology, to put more efforts in improving health for the poverty who can be beneficial immediately, so that it is efficient to improve the healthy level among the whole society. At the same time, following the action, the positive reputation can be achieved, which could be effective to enlarge their influence within the citizens who would take the priority over other brand.
However, the nature for the companies is to get more profits, which cannot be overlooked by other purposes, and the more money they earn, the more contribution they can make for the economy of the society. Meanwhile, the expenditure invested in the research and development of new drugs is enormous; if the profits are not guaranteed, the future of their career could be threatened, as well as the incomes for the employees, the consequence and the burden of which would be more serious especially when the companies are small-scaled.
In conclusion, although the difficulties and worries are looming in front all the medical corporations, it is worth taking the responsibility of creating a better living environment for the community where they are located to achieve a long-term win-win situation.
The newspaper will remain to be an important source of people’s news consumption, even though other media may get the upper hand. Many predict that the print’s days are numbered due to strong competition from television, radio and the Internet. In terms of popularity, newspaper is statistically down but is not emotionally out.
Statistically, it can be said that the print news audiences are dwindling, which means newspaper readership is getting eclipsed by other ways of learning about news. It is a long, slow and painful downward spiral to the point that the newspaper, like vinyl records and film cameras, is a relic for collectors. According to research reports on the news industry, local television is the number one source of news for the majority of people, with digital news coming in second, followed by the radio, and then by the newspaper. One possible explanation why the newspaper is being left far behind is that many people do not see the point in buying a print newspaper if they believe they can get all the news they need elsewhere for free.
Nevertheless, for emotional reasons print newspapers will continue to exist for a good while. To begin with, the feeling of a warm newspaper right off the press is one of traditional readers’ favorite moments to begin a regular day. Unlike other ways of delivering news, a print newspaper can be physically held in a reader’s hands, and this is a huge pro for print editions. In addition, newspapers can provide opportunities for longer, more in-depth feature articles that tend to be read in full. Instead of becoming a thing of the past, print newspapers are still widely read and preferred by many audiences.
In conclusion, the golden days of print news are gone forever, but nothing is like the feeling of physically holding a newspaper in hands. After all, the different ways of learning about news are not mutually exclusive. Each news media outlet is effective in its own way. (338 words)

There are many advertisements directed at children, such as snacks, toys and other goods. Parents argue that children are under pressure. Advertisers claim that the advertisements provide useful information. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.(有许多针对儿童的广告,如零食、玩具和其他商品。
As children grow to be the target group of advertisement industry, a range of advertisements aimed at them have been produced, which had caused some controversies in the society.
Those who advocate the spread of advertising targeted at children deem that these advertisements can provide potential customers with a comprehensive understanding of the products advertised, which can help consumers make well-informed buying decisions. Since television advertisements can present goods in a visual and audio way, this can definitely enhance people’s knowledge of the advertised goods, especially some electronic toys or newly-introduced food.
On the other hand, parents are concerned that children are easily attracted by the vivid advertisement from the Internet or television, and because of it, kids will pester their parents to buy the goods advertised. Obviously, children are a group of consumers without the ability to distinguish good from bad and right from wrong. If they are convinced of the benefits of the products from the advertisement, they will not consider the negative aspects or further explore the truth of the advertisement itself.
Besides, peer pressure is another point which needs to be mentioned here. The widespread advertising campaign will make the public overwhelmed by these advertisements, which means there will always be some parents and children purchasing the advertised goods, and therefore, some psychological factor of children may urge a part of them to obtain the products even though they may not need the goods.
Personally, advertisements themselves contain a lot of information which can be quite useful for consumers. If the advertising industry can be well regulated and children being supervised when they are watching the advertisements, there is no need for parents to worry about the side effects by the widespread advertisements.

You have decided to give several hours of your time each month to improve the community where you live.
What is one thing you will do to improve your community? Why?
Model Answer:
I think the question what would I do if I had a chance to improve my community is difficult. I have in my mind many things, the improvement of which will make our community better place to live but they all require the participation of many people and, moreover, they require investments, which I can not provide. For example, my community is quite noisy. We have the huge mall just in front of our community, so traffic jams are very common for this place. I think that the construction of a few pass-by roads will benefit all people who live here as well as people who drive by every day.
Unfortunately, the question is what I can do for my community giving a few hours of my time every month. I think I can not do much, but I still can help someone in my community. For example, I can baby-sit. I know a couple of families with little children, who can not afford to spend much money on the baby-sitter. One of these families is a single mom with a little girl. Julia, this is her name, is a waitress in a restaurant. She is a great person and we became close friends. So, sometimes I offer her help with her child when she has to work in the evenings. Another family has two funny little twins. One time their parents asked me to babysit their children because they had to attend an unexpected presentation.
I think this kind of help brings many benefits to my community. First of all, people become friendlier. For example, those families, which I mentioned above, became friends after I introduced them to each other. Second of all, people get to know each other and feel more secure in their houses and apartments. Finally, I am ready to help those people because I am sure that they will help me too. One time I lost the keys from my car and Julia offered me her car for a while.
To sum up, I believe that baby-sitting is a great way to help my community in many aspects.
When people need to complain about a product or poor service, some prefer to complain in writing and others prefer to complain in person.
Which way do you prefer?
Model Answer:
It is rather difficult for me to answer the question how I prefer to complain: in writing or in person because sometimes I just do not have a choice. For example, if I order a product using the Internet from another state or even country, I will more likely have the opportunity to speak to a representative of a company in person. So, in some cases I choose to speak in person and in others I prefer to complain in writing. However, I believe that every option has its advantages.
From the one side, complaining in writing brings many benefits. First of all, one does not have to spend his precious time driving, waiting for his turn and talking with a representative. He can just send mail or e-mail and get all explanation he needs. Second of all, I think it is the best way to avoid an unpleasant conversation. Personally, I do not like to complain about anything especially, in person. Finally, sometimes it is impossible to have a face-to-face conversation because a company which provided a poor product or service is too far away.
From the other side, complaining in person has some benefits too. First, this type of complaining provides an immediate feedback. So, if I have some complains about company's products I will receive all information and explanation right away. However, sending a company a letter and getting a feedback can take more then a month. Second, face-to-face conversation is often more effective. People talk to each other, see each other facial gestures and body movements, which can tell a lot about a person. In addition to these practical benefits, in the case if one can not receive creditable explanation from one representative he always can require to talk to another person. For instance, my husband recently had some extra withdraws from his account by his bank and he was not aware of it. So, he went to the bank and explained to the bank's representative the situation and they together found the solution and that money was given back to my husband's account. I think, in this case face-to-face conversation is the best way to complain and get feedback fast.
In conclusion, I think that if I have to complain about a product or poor service I will do it in person. However, if face-to-face conversation is impossible I think I have nothing left but to send a letter or write an e-mail there.

Dear John,
I hope you're well. Thanks for giving me some time to think about your business proposal.
First, let me just say that I think it would be a great idea to open a café on the high street. It definitely makes sense since there are no other cafés in the area.
Having said that, I'm afraid I'm going to have to turn your offer down. I've thought long and hard about this decision, and I just dont think it's the right time for me to get involved with a big project like this.
To be honest, I would struggle to find enough money to cover my share of the initial investment costs. Also, I don't really want to leave my current job, and I think it would be impossible for me to commit to
the café project while I'm still working full-time.
Best of luck with the café. I'm sure you'll make a success of it without me!

比较直白的衔接有一些词可以运用:similarly, bycontrast, conversely, to a lesser / greater extent等。

In many countries today, people buy a range of household goods ( television, microwave, oven and rick cookers) Is it a positive or negative development?
In contemporary society, most families are capable to afford home appliances such as television, microwave, oven and so on. It is generally accepted that those technological goods have brought great convenience to our life although they do generate negative effects on environment.
In terms of merits of using domestic appliances, the most obvious is that people’s quality of life has been boosted. Take TV as an example; watching TV is a preferable means of relaxation for people to spend their leisure time and release stress, with amusing programs, entertainment news as well as soap operas shown on the screen. Another case is that the application of microwave, oven and rock cookers in the kitchen saves housewives from heavy housework and even assists them in cooking delicious meals efficiently. Furthermore, consumers’ demands for electric appliances stimulate the development of manufacturing industries, which creates more job opportunities and bring the government increasing tax revenue.
However, it must be admitted that the worldwide use of household appliances inevitably contributes to environmental degradation. To commence with, in an attempt to maintain these devices function, a great amount of electricity has to be consumed, which is largely generated from fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum. In the long run, the scarcity of natural resources will become a tough issue for human beings. In addition, harmful gas emission is another big concern. As a matter of fact, in the use of fridge and air conditions, Freon (a kind of chemical gas) is emitted into air, leading to the destruction of ozone layer.
In conclusion, as far as I am concerned, it is a positive development that people can purchase various electric appliances. However, environment-friendly technology should be adopted in its production to protect environment.

There are numerous factors that contribute to students’ intense pressure in study, including fierce competition, parents’ high expectation, and constant demands for more knowledge and skills. As a result, the stress which once only appeared among college students now starts to bother pupils. In my mind, this is a positive change.
Admittedly, some parents and education experts have concerns that the pressure may deprive children of a happy and healthy childhood. With too much time occupied by classes and homework, children have not enough time to do sports and play games which are equally important for their physical and mental development. Consequently, what fill their memory for childhood will be complaint and resentment. Even worse, the heavy pressure may fail to help children acquire academic excellence but discourage their confidence and make them lose interests in study.
However, the above mentioned concerns can be effectively addressed by parents’ and teachers’ efforts to reasonably arrange children’s schedule and arouse their passion. After all, the earlier one begins to work hard on study, the more chances he or she stands to succeed. It is highly necessary for children to lay a solid foundation of basic knowledge at a young age, which enables them to excel in the study of more complicated subjects later in high school and college. Moreover, at formative years, it is comparatively easier to nurture good study habits which have even more far reaching influence.
In a nutshell, the positive impacts of study pressure on young students far outweigh negative ones. With parents’ and teachers’ guidance, children ought to work hard on study at a young age.
In recent years, the pressure of students in both schools and universities has increased. They are pushed to work hard at a young age. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

The wealth gap between 1st world countries and 3rd world countries seems to be increasing. How can we reduce this gap? Do you think that developed countries have a duty to assist developing countries in every way?
Model Answer:
Every day the rich countries in the world get richer and the poor countries get poorer. Can we reduce this gap? Of course we can. The question is whether the people in power want to do it?
Reducing the wealth gap can be achieved by cancelling third world debt, cancelling trade and farming subsidies so that third world countries can compete, getting rid of third world corruption and investing and building in third world countries using local people and skills and allowing them ownership of businesses. There are other things as well. Unfortunately there is no profit in business for first world countries to do these things. Some will do them but most will not. The ordinary man on the street wants things to be better for poorer countries and the politicians say that they will help but the politicians will in the end do what business tells them to do. Politicians also rightly feel they have a duty to protect their own countries and keeping economically dominant is part of this duty. Creating effective competition for their own country?s businesses is not part of what they are expected to do.
This then leads on to whether I believe that developed countries have a duty to help the developing countries. Yes, I do. As an individual I believe that we have a duty to assist the poorer countries with their development in all aspects. We can provide teachers and education and doctors on the small scale and on the larger scale the things that I have talked about in the previous paragraph. Can we do this? Yes. Will we do this? See the previous paragraph again.
In conclusion you can see that I believe that there is a split between what would happen in a perfect world and what actually happens. We have a duty to reduce the wealth gap between developed and developing countries and we can do it, but it is unlikely that this will happen quickly.
Children's lives these days are quite different from our generation's. Describe what are the biggest changes in younger generation and explain some factors of this phenomenon.
Model Answer:
Over the past few decades, the world has significantly changed. Nowadays, many have begun to wonder what the reasons behind [=for] these changes are. Two major factors contributing to this phenomenon are advances in media and change family dynamics [=organization].
First, advances in media, such as the Internet and TV, have meant that children spend a large portion of their leisure time in front of a screen. Consequently, they are not getting proper amounts of exercise, which results in an increase in the number of children who are overweight and obese. In addition, fast food restaurants have become increasingly popular, which has also contributed to children's health problems
Moreover, another leading force of this trend is changes in the family unit. Compared with a half century ago, nuclear families have become way more common in modern society. People tend to have only one child, which has caused personality disorders such as depression, loneliness, and selfishness. This is mainly because parents with one child have tendency to put all their focus and money into their only son or daughter. Studies have indicated that over 65% of children who are brought up without siblings show self-centered behavior find it difficult cooperating with their peers.
In summary, there are many factors that have caused children to live very differently from the generation before them. There are high hopes that parents exercise(s) wisdom in treating their children.

Obesity is a serious problem in many countries, especially in rich countries. Discuss ways to solve the problem. Provide specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
With the advent of urbanisation and the rise in popularity of fast food, there have been accompanying issues with rising obesity rates – especially in developed countries like England and the USA. After providing a careful analysis of why obesity has risen so sharply in these countries, I shall suggest a number of ways in which the obesity epidemic can be ameliorated.
To begin with, it should be unsurprising that fast food is incredibly popular in wealthy countries (like England and the USA). Due to the high levels of development in these countries, consumers possess more money and can therefore consume vast amounts of fast food without seriously diminishing their income. For example, the American Dietary Association found that (compared to the average Indian household), the average American household has a six times larger budget for food per month. Consequently, it is to be expected that obesity rates are much higher in countries with larger amounts of wealth.
However, despite the severity of the obesity problem, there are a number of ways in which developed countries could battle it more effectively. Firstly, developed governments could put far more pressure on fast food outlets to provide healthy alternatives to hamburgers, french fries and soft drinks.
Secondly, public exercise initiatives could be advertised and promoted far more vigorously. Lastly, modules that inform teenagers about healthy dietary requirements could be taught at schools.
In conclusion, although obesity is a serious issue in the developed world, if the above steps are taken, the situation will surely improve in the coming years.

Task 2 Question: Some people think that the government should provide assistance to all kinds of artists includes painters, musicians, poets, however, other people think that is a waste of money for providing this assistance. State your opinion.
To be of assistance or not, it indeed is debatable if artists deserve and require funding by the government. Firstly, I acknowledge that the benefits from artists and poets can enrich our everyday lives in so many different ways; otherwise our life would have been a lot drabber without them.
Any genuine artist most certainly deserves some form of aid and there can not be any doubt about that, however, whether they require government assistance is another issue altogether. Contrary to popular belief it seems to be that not all artists and literary personalities are wealthy, and most renowned personalities are deservedly rich and famous.
While the other large group of artists is neither rich nor famous, they do continue to produce the art works as for the passion and often the passion is what drives them. It would be ridiculous to think that any kind of financial incentives could power their creativity. However, not many of them are able to take up their passion on a full time basis because they cannot afford to. It is import to note that most creative artists are made, and were not born so. It is the vagaries of life & struggles that they have to face which fuels their creativity, in the process they need to mature into renowned to be an artist or a writer. When they do and when their work is recognized, there will not be any dearth of money or fame.
In my opinion, it would be criminal to take away this very drive and shun their creativity. Having said that, I do believe that they need to have some kind of incentives, it can be in the way of appreciation and opportunity to present their talent to the rest of the world. This could be done in various ways, for instance, giving tax incentives to amateur artists and writers or financial rebates in government owned auditoriums to stage their presentations.
In talking about artists in Australia, which has a concrete social security system in place to take care of all kinds of basic needs, any kind of added financial incentives are not only an added burden on the taxpayer. It would be an issue to find out worthy beneficiaries and there will be enough crooks who will misuse any well intended government assistance schemes. Every human being craves for recognition and money happens to be one of the means towards this end, however, as I mentioned in the beginning it is more important to acknowledge their work than provide financial assistance.
On the other hand, as a Chinese, my perception of the government’s assistance is more questionable. Firstly, we need to give artists a definition and how do you classify a person who is an artist. In essence, calligraphy, poetry, music and art they all can be extended to a person who writes well, paints well in his/her Blog. To extend this artist sense further, can we say a singer is an artist? Well, there are many pop song and folk music singers in China. In the same way, a dancer, a talk show’s talent, a movie star, the director, the photographer they can all be artists. And this number of artists would add up to whole population of Australia. How could the Chinese government provide any assistance without any discrimination to those artists in every classification? I personally do not believe our government has enough financial ability to accommodate this wide ganging number of artists.
As a Chinese I can see that in my country, there is still a big gap between the poor and the rich, I would rather government’s financial assistance be directed toward the poor, this does not mean that I would think to provide assistance to artists is a waste of money. My point is that while we can give a true definition of artists, government should use our taxes in a way to be more accountable for.
There is nothing unusual about energy like coals and oils being consumed, principally because economic development depends on natural resources all the time. But what is happening today is extraordinary judged by the standards of the past. It is energy depletion on a massive scale and this problem is so knotty that should deserve our closer heed.
Amongst the diverse factors contributing to the energy crises around the world, government’s short-sighted policies and citizens’ extravagant use of automobiles are probably the two most significant ones. By presuming on their natural resources, quite a few countries, especially developing ones, are eager to develop their economy in order to gain an edge over their rivals. Admittedly, their intensive use of the energy facilitates, to some extent, the developments of other industries in short term. Additionally, the amount of private cars increases at such a breakneck speed that the petroleum used amounts to an intimidating proportion of the natural resources.
The consequences are undoubtedly disastrous for human beings. Although countries can boast their growth of GDP, their citizens have to endure the ever deteriorated environment with stinking gas belching from factories and vehicles, polluted water due to fuels infiltrating underground, even ultraviolet radiation in the absence of ozone layer and, therefore, their quality of life is by no means improved. Also, sustainable development can never come into true in this situation, meaning that our descendants can benefit nothing except sterile land and polluted air and water from their ancestors.
Therefore, our government must take serious steps to attack those problems. The first and foremost is that governments have to reverse their mindset and no longer deem the growth of GDP their first goal. Rather, the betterment of citizens’ quality of life should deserve more attention than the economic growth. Furthermore, the use of private cars should be discouraged by authorities, who must shoulder the responsibility of improving public transportation in order to facilitate people as well as release the burden of energy consumption.
In conclusion, to avoid the phrase “filthy rich” added to themselves, countries must pay more heed to the efficient use of their energy and the issue of environmental protection, while they develop their economy; otherwise, environmental apocalypse and energy crisis are feared to happen in the horizon.
