A fifteen-year-old boy was injured in a car accident when the minivan he was traveling in was hit by a pickup truck at an intersection. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital. The paramedics said that it appeared that the boy had nothing more serious than a broken left leg, but that internal injuries were always a possibility. The boy was conscious and alert. His mother, who was driving, was uninjured. She said that the truck appeared out of nowhere, and she thought she was going to die. She turned the steering wheel sharply to the left, and the truck hit her minivan on the passenger side.
The driver of the truck was a 50-year-old man who was unemployed and apparently had been drinking—police found 18 empty beer cans inside the truck. The man denied drinking, but he failed the police test for sobriety. When asked to touch his nose with his arms outstretched and eyes closed, he was unable to touch any part of his head.
The handcuffed man asked the police if they knew where “Mabel” was as he was put into the back seat of the police vehicle. The police asked him if Mabel was his wife. He said, “She’s my dog, my dog! The man was taken to the city jail and booked on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and on causing an accident.

寒冷的冬天，几个流浪汉为了躲避风雪，便挤在一处豪宅的屋檐下取暖，当豪宅内有人出来驱赶他们时，却被屋主——一位心地善良的富翁阻止了，富翁不仅留下了他们，还吩咐手下为他们提供一些饮食衣物。此后，富翁更特意请人将屋檐加大加宽，以便更多无家可归的穷人能在他的屋檐下过冬。

“伤自尊”的后果
一直以来，人类对尊重的需求往往被低估了，我们只知道“伤自尊”是件令人难堪的事情，会让某些人做出一些蠢事来。然而我们可能从来就没料到：“伤自尊”其实是件十分危险的事情，何止是让人做出蠢事，也会让人做出“坏”事，甚至是杀人于无形的“恶”事。
司马迁所著的《史记·越世家》中有一篇《陶朱公长子吝金害弟》，记载了这样一件事：
陶朱公范蠡的二儿子在楚国因为杀了人被抓进牢里，范蠡打算派小儿子带上两万四千两黄金去营救。可大儿子不乐意了，认为自己是长子，这么重大的事情让小儿子去做等于说他无能，将来也不配子承父业。于是，长子不惜以死相逼，要求由他去楚国救出二弟。范蠡的妻子也替长子说话，范蠡只好答应长子，他写了一封信，要长子送给自己从前的好友庄生，并吩咐道：“你到了地点，就把黄金放在庄生家，任凭他怎么去处理，千万别与他发生争执。”
到了楚国，大儿子遵照其父的吩咐，送上书信和金钱。庄生对他说：“你可尽快回去罢，不要留在这里;即便你弟弟出来，也不要追究其中的原因。”可大儿子并没听从庄公的话，他不仅私自留在了楚国，还把他私下带来的其余钱财拿去送给楚国掌管事务的贵人。
庄生身居陋巷，却享有廉洁正直之名，自楚王以下的人，都像尊敬老师一般地尊敬他。他虽然留下了范蠡的金钱，但并非真的接受，而是打算事成之后再返还，以此表示诚信(就如医生先收下红包，做完手术再还给病人)。只是，范蠡的长子并不明白庄生用意。
庄生寻机入宫见楚王，巧妙游说楚王大赦天下，楚王同意了。收了长子钱财的楚贵人观察出楚王将大赦天下的征兆，即刻将消息透露给范蠡长子，长子认为，楚王若大赦，二弟理所当然会被放出来，那先前给庄生的钱财不就白送了吗?于是，他又去拜见庄生。庄生吃惊地问道：“你怎么还没回去?”范蠡长子说：“我还没回去，当初是为我弟弟的事来见你，现在我弟弟的事楚王已议定自然赦免，所以，我再来辞谢。”庄生知道他的用意，是想拿回他的金钱。便说：“你自己到屋子里去拿金子罢!”范蠡长子就到屋里拿着黄金走了，高兴得不得了，觉得自己真是赚到了!
范蠡长子的行为令庄生觉得自己受到了羞辱，便再次进宫见楚王，对楚王说：“楚王大赦天下本是出于善念，岂料我听外面的人都说，范蠡的儿子杀了人，被囚禁在楚国，他的家人拿了许多金钱贿赂大王手下的人，所以，大王的大赦并不是怜悯楚国百姓，而是为范蠡的儿子开脱罪责。”
楚王大怒，说：“我虽然没有什么德可言，怎么会为了范蠡儿子的缘故而施恩惠呢?”便命令先杀了朱公的儿子，第二天才下发赦免令。
就这样，范蠡长子只好带着弟弟的尸体返回家乡。
回到家后，他的母亲和家乡人都很伤心，范蠡却说：“我本来就知道若派他去必然会害死他弟弟。他并不是不爱他弟弟，而实在是舍不得钱财。他小时候家中境况不好，亲眼目睹谋生的艰难困苦，所以对钱财十分看重;至于小儿子，他一出生便尽享荣华富贵，根本不在乎挥霍金钱。我之所以打算派小儿子去，就是因为他能舍弃钱财的缘故。如今因为长子不愿舍财而害死了亲弟弟，这都是意料之中的事。”
这篇古文从命题到最终结论，都告诉人们，是范蠡长子对金钱的吝啬害死了自己的弟弟，可是，真是如此吗?难道不是庄生对范蠡长子的报复才导致范蠡二儿子被处死的吗?大儿子的吝啬只是因，庄生的报复才是果。
妄动尊严的反击
可是，庄生的杀机因何而起?别忘了，他既非坏人亦非小人，恰恰相反，他是个清廉正直之人，并且，他还是范蠡旧时好友，何况，他原来就没打算留下黄金。那么，反正对方不来要黄金他也会还给他的，拿走便拿走呗，是什么令剧情有如此大的反转?
既然那两万四千两黄金，在还回去与要回去之间，庄生并无任何损失，那他计较的是什么?
是自尊。
还回去，意味着能力与人格的双重肯定：我有能力令一个人死罪得免，同时，金钱于我如浮云，我一文不取。对于庄生来说，这样的自我感觉不仅满足了他自尊的需求，同时也满足了他自我实现的需求。所以，即便没有肉眼可见的既得利益，但成就感使他内心愉悦。
然而，要回去是几个意思?要回去就等于啪啪打脸，偏偏被打的这个人不在乎金钱，就在乎颜面。
当然，庄生并不认为自己的行为是报复，因为报复似乎是一个心胸狭隘的人才会做的事，他是不齿的。所以，在他的心目中，他只觉得他必须给那个伤了他自尊的浑小子一点教训，好让他明白他错大了!
这样庄生的自尊才得以修复。因为：你终于知道你狗眼看人低了，你终于了解我是怎样一个神圣不可侵犯的人了。虽然这教训搭上了一条人命，但那条人命是你所犯错误付出的代价，血在你的手上。
问题是，两千多年以来，似乎从来就没人觉得庄生做错了什么，而一致认为是范蠡长子害死了弟弟。何解?是不是在潜意识里，我们也与庄生一脉相通，认为当尊严被人践踏时，我们发起的反击就是自卫，因此给对方带来的伤害都属于他自找，妄动他人的尊严等于自杀式袭击。
“贱”成了“自尊”创口上磨出的茧
很可能，你觉得以上这种说法太夸张了，又或者，你觉得那是别人的故事，不会在你身上出现。
真的吗?那好吧，你不妨做道选择题：
甲，你拨通一个电话，交谈中对方说：“喂、喂，你说的是什么，怎么说都说不清?你再说一遍。”
乙，你拨通一个电话，交谈中对方说：“喂、喂，很抱歉我听不清你说什么，可能是我手机信号不好，你能再说一遍吗?”
甲和乙，你愿意向谁再说一遍而不生气?
表面上看，似乎这是个小小的礼貌问题，但为什么一个小小的不礼貌也会引起你的不快，以至于对甲你很可能不是“再说一遍”，而是反驳他：“你耳朵不好使还怪我说不清?”
即便是没恶意的不礼貌，也让你感觉自尊被扎了一下，你不由自主地便没了好气。
再假设，在你周围有两个女子令你动心，一个对你很好一个对你若即若离，试问，你会更关注更在乎谁?
