Today’s tip is on how syllable stress can affect the meaning of words.

In order to understand spoken English, it is essential to understand how this linking is done.

Today let’s concentrate on the most common sound linking situation.

Whenever a word ending in a consonant sound is followed by a word beginning with a vowel sound, the consonant sound is linked to the vowel sound as if they were part of the same word.

若以辅音结尾的单词后面跟着以元音开头的单词，这个辅音就和后面的元音连在一起发音，如同这两个音构成了一个单词。

Let’s look at some examples.

让我们来看一些例子。

I’d like another bowl of rice, please.

First, note that although there’re six words in the sentence, all the words are linked together without pause.

Listen again.

Now listen to how the words “like” and “another” are linked.

1.一定的词汇量是英语口语的基础。

我们与人交流的前提是要听懂别人在讲什么，因此我们在英语口语的练习中首先要注意词汇量的积累.其方式多样，如阅读、做题、听录音、看录像或原文电影等，来扩大词汇量、掌握英语的习惯表达方式，扩大知识面和训练英语逻辑思维能力。这些训练，可使我们熟练掌握常用的词组、短语等。只有熟练，会话才能流利，与人交流才能不假思索地脱口而出。

2.通过中西文化及语言的差异比较，设计日常口语会话情景，训练日常口语会话。

要熟练掌握日常口语会话，就必须掌握范围广阔的、基本得当的日常用语，如怎样表示想与陌生人交谈;怎样表示喜爱与厌恶，赞同与异议;怎样问路与指路等。自己设计情景，组织会话，并进行反复实践。在实践中仔细对比英语语言习惯、规律，文化背景等与汉语不同的地方，只有掌握了英语的语言文化才能更好地理解和运用英语。

3.通过对日常生活题材的讨论，逐步提高语言的组织能力。英语口语学有所成的方法

对日常生活题材的讨论是我们训练口语能力的一个重要阶段。在这个阶段中，我们通过参加多种形式的讨论活动与交流扩大知识面，促进思维能力及驾驭语言的能力。

4.听力的培养不可忽视。

听与说是一种相辅相成的关系，听不明白就会给交流带来很大的麻烦。听力困难主要有三个方面的原因：1)语言本身的困难。如：语法、句型、发音的基础不够扎实。2)文化内容上的困难。3)心理障碍.听英语的潜在困难属于心理障碍，如总感到被动，无把握，过分紧张等。
