我看懂了一半。由于工具与动作的繁杂，使我不得不抛下那些疑问来专注我所熟悉的――故事情节的发展。从老人厄运的开始，也就是老人登场介绍时就提到的――八十四天没有打到鱼的悲惨命运开始，基调已展现出了低沉，无论是他被饭店里的渔人冷嘲热讽、窝棚简陋不堪还是孩子在父母的命令下不得不离开老人到另一条船去，老人都默默地承受着。我不知道他在遭遇着些所谓“倒了血霉”的事情后心里是不是还平静得像无波澜的海面，但我相信他始终是宽容的，没什么好抱怨，他有着无比的信心与勇气，正如他自己所说，他真的是个“不同寻常的老头儿”。此后，他在第八十五天前夜决定远行，开始了他的这次勇气与意志的较量。他拉着大鱼以及被拖着漂泊了3天的故事我真的不想再提。因为那要读上两个小时左右的文字中涉及到太多我不曾听过、见过的用具。而且由于这些的干扰使我无法对作者细致的动作描写进行想象与感悟。但是那字里行间显露出来的艰辛与坎坷真的是让我的心随着老人的一举一动而变得忐忑不安。所以，我不想再咀嚼一遍那身临其境般的苦楚。不过我还是会再读的，不过不光是为了要将那血液中流淌着的勇敢融入我的身体。

It's long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I don't remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It's
pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the heroine,though I didn't think she's beautiful. But she's smart. However, I didn't pay much attention to the plot. I thought it's so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I haven't read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice.
In fact, I didn't understand the story at that time. I didn't know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didn't find where' s the prejudice. I thought it's normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting.

Fortunately the old man met with a big fish as he had wished and finally defeated the big Marlin with two days and nights struggle after overcoming great difficulties. But more unfortunately there were many sharks coming after his boat attracted by the smell of the blood of the big Marlin. After death-and-life struggle, when he finally got rid of the sharks coming after the boat, the big Marlin was bare skeleton.
The Old Man and the Sea tells a frustrated experience of the old man who fishes alone in the sea in plain languages. Through the simple lines, a “tough guy” image is shaped and heroism is praised. The whole story starts with a peaceful beginning which is some trivial of life and talking with the boy, and suddenly turns to its climax which is the dangerous fighting with the big fish and sharks alone in the sea, and ends with the old mans return with the bare skeleton of the big Marlin. When all of people think he is doomed, he still strongly believes that he will get a big fish. And he does. So never giving up hope is very important to us. However, on the way to harbor, the old man was attacked by many sharks who tracked after the smell of the dead salmon, what he still hold was only the bone of the big fish when he arrived at port.

He created the figure of the old man which was later called by people “tough man” and showed his life attitude and spiritual world. The most well-known sentence of this novel and also the topic of it is that: “man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” These words become belief of many readers.
In my opinion, the whole story is about a battle between an old man and the sea, both of which are considered to have symbolic meanings according to critics. The old man once was so energetic and strong but couldnt get harvest from the sea. He used his old body and strong mind to fight against nature and challenge his fate. He did win a bit—he got the large fish, but he lost totally because he carried back only the skeleton of the fish with his hands bleeding. On the other hand, he had done all he could to fight against all unlucky things and didnt lose his face. He behaved like a real man, a tough man.
Its a tragic novel, but its also a heroic symphony. The poor old fisherman was regarded as a failure by other fishers as he had captured nothing during the past 84 days. But the ordeal was not to the end even he had succeeded in capturing the big fish. The salmon was bigger than his fishing-boat, he dad no choices but binding the fish to one side of his boat. During his way home, the dead salmon was attacked again and again by shakes followed after the smell of blood. He had to do everything he could do to protect his victory. Harpoon was taken away by a shark, he tied the knife on the oar to stick the shake; the knife was broken, he used short stick to fight against the shark; the short stick was lost, he fought with rudder......Nothing could destroy his volition though the fish was eaten by sharks.
